Living for Love.
-
Maybe Nas is on the official remix, "Livin' 4 Luv".
-
If it ends up being Unapologetic Bitch feat Miley, Nicki & Siri after all this I'll be pissed.
-
It's been through A LOT of transitions, always danceable though.
Do you think it's the best choice for lead single from what you've heard?
I want her to get everything right this time round.
-
It sounds like it'll be along the lines of Rebel Heart production...lacking originality but with M's signature lyrics and style.
There's no way a song produced by Diplo and Ariel together isn't going to have great production. They did Climax which has impeccable sound design:
-
I'm talking about Ariel Rechtshaid who works with Diplo, not the awful Little Mermaid cunt.
-
YES! Give me that new Like a Prayer/Nothing Fails.
What do we know about the song other than that it features Alicia Keys on piano and has a choir section? It's a Diplo x Ariel track right?
-
Peak Madonna.
-
Yeah it's a nonsense list. Billboard themselves compiled a ranking of the most successful Hot 100 artists of all time (with Madonna at #2 behind The Beatles); this is just a poor knock-off version designed to be low-hanging clickbait for internet stans.
This only takes into account Top 10 hits, and fails to factor in the length of stay within the Top 10. So a song that peaked at say #4 but lasted 10 weeks within the Top 10 would receive less points than a song that spent one week at #2, when manifestly the former is the bigger hit. Billboard's methodology for its own list recognised Top 40 hits (and remember reaching the Top 40 has always been the standard metric for a "hit") and incorporated longevity. Time's list is just a redundant version of that.
-
There's no singular Blond Ambition picture but it's easily her most iconic look.
I'd also say these are right up there:
-
Wow, they're banning people from using phones - someone just got kicked out from getting one out!
How the fuck is M going to manage not being on her Blackberry for 3 hours.
-
Agreed. I've also always thought there's a really religious, spiritual quality to the song - similar to Like A Prayer.
It's interesting that she references rain in several of her most poetic songs - here obviously, but also in Secret Garden (if I wait for the rain to kiss me and undress me..), Sanctuary (who needs the sun when the rain's so full of life) and Mer Girl (I ran to the sky, out to the lake, into the rain that matted my hair, and soaked my shoes and skin... I tasted the rain, I tasted my tears).
Two might be a coincidence, but four (there could even be more?) is a pattern. I think rain for M is absolutely a symbol of life and
cumfertility and motherhood and by consequence her Mother. In Rain she's waiting on that mountain top endlessly for the storm to pass and in Mer Girl she's running to the lake and up to the hill and she's looking there still and she's always, forever haunted by her mother's spirit.
-
Rain despite its blatant extended cum metaphor could also be about her mother right? I mean:
"When you looked into my eyes, and you said goodbye could you see my tears?"
"By sheer voice of will (I feel like a magical child), I will raise you from the ground"
Rain works just as well as a metaphor for the elemental force of love coming down from the heavens above (which she already referenced in D&D). It always sounded to me like it was a song about a deceased lover, but with M it wouldn't surprise me if it was another codified paean to her mother, like Inside of Me.
I never feel like I can over-analyse Erotica, she's operating on so many levels on this album - from the song titles down.
-
Bedtime Stories is the morning after the night (Erotica) before.
-
And I thought Erotica couldn't get any queerer.
-
Someone on ATRL (I know) worked out the Metacritic scores for a ton of old albums. For Madonna:
Madonna 78
Like a Virgin 75
True Blue 73
Like A Prayer 92
Erotica 71
Bedtime Stories 71
Ray of Light 87 -
It probably is "Like a Virgin", but "Like a Prayer" is looking like it will outpace it as her signature hit with time.
-
M, no matter how many meanings you give to it, sounds less inspired than MDNA which was brilliant.
Yeah MDNA was an incredible title - right up there with the likes of The Immaculate Collection as titles go. Shame it's lack of success and quality compared to the rest of her albums has left it with a poor reputation. If she'd had called Confessions MDNA (which would have totally fit - it's far more of a ecstasy fuelled rave up than a confessional work) it would have been I-C-O-N-I-C.
-
M = 13th letter of the alphabet as well = 13th studio album (I'm Breathless aside ) and 13 is the most spiritually significant number in Kabbalah. So it would make sense.
But I don't want another self-titled album, especially after MDNA and the endless number of self-titled albums from every other pop girl recently. Using that M as a logo would be cool though.
-
Switched out "Don't Stop" for this on my Bedtime Stories tracklist a few years ago and haven't looked back.
It actually fits the theme of the album perfectly (language, words, truth etc.)

I agree . During the time of Hung Up US Radio was very hip hip driven. I remembered reading an article where her then label WB said they were having a hard time getting her played on US radio because COTDF was a dance record.
This is the quote :
Warner Bros. was aware that the songs on "Confessions" could present challenges at mainstream top 40 radio, acknowledges Tom Biery, senior VP of promotions at Warner Bros. "Top 40 radio is so hip-hop-driven," he says. "We were coming in with a global pop star who made a dance record."
Yeah this is all correct, the age/radio backlash think is totally overstated when it comes to "Hung Up" and COADF. Remember how Gwen's "What You Waiting For?" bombed in the same year before she followed it with the Eve featuring "Rich Girl" and Neptunes' "Holloback Girl" - dance music had no chance of going anywhere on US radio in 2002-2005.
And it wasn't just that "Hung Up" was dance, it was straight up disco - the most loathed and feared of all dance subgenres in the US. Even when "EDM" exploded in the US in the late 00s the music that dominated the charts has been mostly synth driven brostep - disco by and large is considered too gay for America.
-
It's amazing how Like A Prayer has sort of become her signature song, when for years, the average person would say Like A Virgin or Vogue.
That's because it's completely undeniable. Let's not front like LAP wouldn't be considered the greatest song ever if it was by a man.
-
OK, wow at the "kitty" murmuring.
Erotica's depths are endless.
-
I feel COADF sounds even better now - in the wake of all the horrible dance music of recent years it sounds on another level.
That being said if it's slipped down in people's rankings maybe it's because of a general malaise with dance music due to all the EDM in the charts? It sounded so singular in 2005 when there was nothing around quite like it.

She needs to clear out her team. If Beyoncé can record an album (including videos) with no-one even knowing of its existence, Madonna should be able to stop her music constantly making its way to fansites and demo collectors. The only people with access to her music should be her and the producers and a few label bosses.
