  1. I can see Madonna working with Pharrell again. Rumors are that they clashed in the studio, but there still seemed to be this push/pull chemistry between them. You can hear it in the music. And both seemed to come away proud of what they achieved together, even if production was tense at times. Timbaland, I don't imagine her working with again. A shame for me, since overall I liked his contributions to Hard Candy more than Pharrell's, but I get more of a cordial "client" vibe from them. It's like Madonna hired him, he came in and did what he was paid to do, said "there you go," and then left. I'll be honest, and I know that this will clash with some here, but I'm just not at all interested in Madonna going back to electronica, techno-lite, abstract pop, or British/Euro-inspired dance/club music again after this. She played in different corners of that sandbox for a decade. Enough. Unfortunately, I get a bad feeling that she may revert right back to it with the next album.

  2. Not everything that sells well has a high across the board request rate. Kenny G., Josh Groban and Norah Jones albums have massively sold too, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a great enough listener demand for the individual songs to be broadcast. I’m not a fan of either Britney or Christina, but (in general) the latter makes more radio-accessible music than the former.

  3. With all these unsolicited plays, radio is actually asking for this Madonna song to be released as a single (when was the last time that happened?) I can’t believe WB/Madonna are dragging their feet here. For the first time in God knows how long, Madonna records an album that has a number of obvious potential hits on it, and her camp still manages to botch things.

  4. Since The Girlie Show, Madonna’s tours have generally come too late. She’ll wait until the album has been out a year, has no more forthcoming singles, and has fallen off of the charts (or close to it) before she decides to up and hit the road. It seems like it hasn’t been since the 80s that Madonna toured while the album was still hot. With Hard Candy, it seemed like finally her touring wouldn’t be so tardy…but from the looks of it, both she and Warner Bros. actively stopped promoting the album after the first single, so even though this time could have been different, it inadvertently becomes the same situation all again. Maybe if after this tour starts, WB and Madonna started actively promoting the album again (doubtful), HC will see a sales increase…but if everything remains like it is now, with no other push besides her touring, then I doubt it.

  5. I think there may have been more of a Madonna ‘snubbing’ than an outright “boycott.” A situation where Clear Channel stations semi-deliberately overlooked Madonna’s latest music, but didn’t necessarily seek to have her outright blacklisted or banned from the air.

With Madonna it’s so convoluted to try and sort out because you have so many other semantics at play. Using American Life (although I think it started sooner than that) as the starting point of her struggle at radio, one must to keep in mind that it was/is her least commercial album of her career. You then have to question how well any of its singles would have fared at radio, regardless to whether there was a “boycott” or not. Even if there was a boycott at some point, Madonna producing music that seemed to deliberately go against the grain more than likely blurred the lines between “boycott,” disinterest and apathy, as far as radio programmers are concerned.

Now in 2008, after years of being a sonic gypsy, and less hit and more miss, Madonna releasing a commercially assessable album doesn’t automatically reopen the airplay door for her, because it’s been too long now since she was a sure shot at radio. Radio has grown both apathetic to, and fearful/distrusting of, her…on top of other things like age issues, etc. That’s why she seriously fucked up with choosing GI2M as the second single. Even with the success of 4M, she hasn’t regained up enough commercial credit to get away with releasing a song like that and having it skate by on the strength of the single before it.

  6. I always said that “Human Nature” had thriving potential to be huge hit for Madonna. It is—arguably—the most standout track on Bedtime Stories. From I’ve seen even non fans of hers like it. It wasn’t a ‘risky’ choice at all, IMO, and sonically it fit in perfectly with the Waterfalls/This Is How We Do It/Big Poppa/Scream radio climate of 1995. If it had directly followed “Take a Bow” instead of “Bedtime Story” (which was truly a risky single choice that wound up extinguishing the commercial momentum Bedtime Stories had after TAB) I think it would have gone over much, much better.

  7. Yes, but Madonna isn't a US radio favorite artist and couldn't easily have two simultaneous hits. Also 4M had a peculiar release pattern, it was released to radio and as a digital download at the same time. For radio stations that take their time to add songs it may be still considered current. I'm not saying that GI2M should have set the charts on fire or anything but come on, Top 40 at Pop was a realistic expectation, with or without promotion.

I disagree. GI2M was, IMO, a very bad dare. Most of us predicted doom when it was announced that this was going to be the next single. I didn’t expect it to latch on anywhere—expect for with, maybe, club play. Contemporary radio certainly wasn’t going to play it. On the contrary, if BGO had been released while 4M was just slowing down, I could see Madonna possibly having two singles in the top forty simultaneously…but that wasn’t going to happen with a song like GI2M.

  8. In the last five to ten years, I've noticed that whenever Madonna's hardest core fans collectively like a certain song(s) of hers, it winds up underperforming commercially…but when they collectively dislike a certain song, general audiences tend to embrace it more, or it seems like it could be a hit. I don't know where that disconnect started, or what motivates it. Kind of makes me curious to see how well "Candy Shop" would perform if it is released as a single.

  9. From MadonnaTribe News

British paper the SUN reported this morning that singer Britney Spears has been asked to shoot a video for Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour.

MadonnaTribe News can now confirm this and exclusively give you more info on the subject, for the very first time online.

    EXCLUSIVE

Singer Britney Spears has indeed been asked to shoot a video for Madonna's new tour and it's not going to be a video interlude, but a video used while Madonna is singing on stage.

The video is for the exciting new live version of Human Nature, that as previously revealed by MadonnaTribe it's the third song on the Sticky & Sweet tour setlist.

The video will be directed by the one and only Steven Klein, that as previously reported here, will take care of two brand videos for the show, one for an oldie (this one) and one for a new track off Hard Candy.

The original idea behind Human Nature 2008 was to give out an updated version of the song by showing the artists, mainly troubled young hollywood stars, that are being treated as "bitches" by the world press and media, in a similar way they did with Madonna back in 1992 when she the main target of such media attentions.

But Britney is now the main star of the screen video, and while musically Human Nature 2008 originally contained spoken samples of Gimme More, now the concept has been expanded even more with samples of the track, making it longer and cooler and it can easily be described as a sort Human Nature/Gimme More mash up!

Stay Tuned for More exciting and Exclusive tour news from MadonnaTribe News!

MadonnaTribe has reportedly CONFIRMED that Britney will be in one of the tour videos - for HUMAN NATURE. They also describe it as a "Gimme More/Human Nature" mash-up.

If Brit ends up performing with Madonna in L.A., I guarantee that Dodger's Stadium will sell out fast.

I thought this is such HORRIBLE and devastating news it deserves it's own thread. Discuss :|

"Human Nature" is one of my favorite Madonna songs, ever. The idea of a "mash up" involving Britney (and her silly gimme…gimme…more ditty) is tragic and treasonous IMO.

  10. I still have no idea what the motivation behind releasing GI2M as an official single was (aside from maybe using this uber pop song to pacifiy those put-off Madonna fans who’re mad at her for her becoming a ‘thug’ with 4M.) I mean the song is already on the album, so anyone who buys it will hear it…and if she wants to add it to her tour set list, then whatever…but to serve the song up commercially was a mistake from the word go. Radio wasn’t going to play it. The second single should have been either Beat or Devil. Such obvious choices, I can’t understand why it flew over their heads. History has shown us that all it takes is one flop single to kill a Madonna album. They should cancel all promotion of GI2M, and rush release BGO while its still early.

  11. if GI2M flops at US radio, this album is done. GI2M is the best single on the album... hands down.

If GI2M fails at radio, then I agree that it has the potential to be lethal for the album…but only because it would kill commercial interest—with radio not wanting to give any other singles a chance and WB’s probably being confused on how to bounce back from it, and giving up. Not because GI2M is the best song on the album, with the most commercial appeal. If anything, next to “Spanish Lesson,” it’s the song on the album that is -least- likely to do well and should not be properly released.

  12. As curious as I am about Madonna's forthcoming Live Nation era, who knows how long it'll be between now and when she starts recording for them. 2010…2011…? I'm more interested in the here and now, and would prefer to see her go to town promoting this already existing new album. Despite the marriage with WB coming to an end, both she and the label would be foolish to not promote this album (which could generate millions for all involved), and try to make as much money off it as they can.

  13. It's Madonna's own fault. I've still yet to see her make any major appearances to promote Hard Candy. It's as if she and her camp thinks that a CD with Madonna+Timbaland/JT+Pharrell will sell itself while she gets herself together. Even if she does have a tour to plan, she still needs to set aside some time to hit the television circuit.

  14. Madonna's had three uber successful back-to-back tours. I can't help but think that after a while her luck on the concert circuit may begin to wane, if she doesn't start having successful newer music to keep her set list replenished and to lure in new audiences. I mean if I've already seen Madonna twice in the last few years, eventually (especially at her extremely high ticket prices) I may opt to sit the next go round out if I don't have more motivation to see her…other than the fact that she's Madonna.

  15. But their songs are not Mariah type songs plus they are much younger. Just imagine Celine Dion singing the exact same Mariah song in the exact same way. Do you think urban stations will play her. Believe me if Mariah's songs were sung by a pure white artist, they would not be played on urban stations.

Gwen is a year older than Mariah. Fergie is only five years younger than her. Her super poppy "Big Girls Don't Cry" made it to the pole position…and I would imagine w/o much (if any) support from urban radio. Madonna struggles, not only because of her age, but also because she's coming off a ten year euro-pop binge, which has contributed to her loss of automatic hit credit in America—and specifically, her last two albums that produced no hits and struggled in sales. Even though 4M is well received, it isn't enough to make her a darling again.

  16. GI2M is the best song on the album. i don't understand why some of you trash it so much. it's her best dance song since ROL.

I was speaking from a commercial standpoint. GI2M may be a good dance song for the clubs, but I suspect radio will cold shoulder it almost immediately. And with it not being a first single, I don't anticipate sales will be enough to pick up the slack of minimal airplay. We'll see though. Still, I wish something else was chosen to followup 4M. Perhaps either DWRY or BGO.

  17. I'm underwhelmed. I was expecting at least 300k+. I lay most of the blame at Madonna's legs. She didn't go on a publicity attack in the weeks leading up to the albums release. If she had, I think she would have raked in a lot more than what she did. I, however, am trying to not compare it to Mariah's…whose album only opened with 180k more. Which is not a whole lot. The question now is where they go from here. It's not like American Life. Hard Candy's first single is still a huge hit, and accomplished the feat. of getting Madonna's name back on the radio and charts. I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet. Hopefully they'll play on that to continue to (better) promote, instead of bailing out the way Janet did. I will say though that the follow up singles need to be more carefully considered, which is why I think they should cancel GI2M and release something more commercial next.
