  1. So, I was just doing some research for my upcoming trip to the US and I thought "oh gotta find out where M's star is" and thought to myself "gosh, I don't even remember anything about one :S" so I googled it and my thoughts were correct. Why doesn't she want one?

    "

Madonna doesn't have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame because she's just not interested.

It's not an honor. Many have rejected the "honor". Someone has to put up the money for it and maintain it.

It seems like everyone who is anyone has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame -- everyone except Madonna that is! The Grammy-winning songstress just didn't care about receiving a star when she was chosen for the honor in 1990. Now, Madonna would have to be resubmitted for a nomination in order to receive a star. However, Walk of Fame spokeswoman Ana Martinez-Holler said, "since she is not interested, I highly doubt that she will give a nominator the permission to do so."

Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro' Video: A Guide To Its Madonna References

Aside from initial 'Vogue' comparisons, there are traces of 'Like a Prayer,' 'Human Nature' and other Material Girl clips.

When the brief preview for Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" video appeared during the singer's appearance on "Larry King Live" last week, many people immediately noticed the nod to Madonna's "Vogue." It was all there: the sharp black-and-white photography, the muscular dancing, the spartan set, the iconic hairstyle.

But as it turns out, the full version of "Alejandro" — which premiered Tuesday (June 8) — is a healthy combination of a number of different references, nods and homages to a bevy of Madonna videos.

The "Vogue" references are certainly there, as Gaga spends a large chunk of the video in that same spartan set in black-and-white. But the rest of the clip features Gaga in a number of different costumes — including a red nun's habit and some sort of steampunk headgear — in a handful of different scenarios (some of which involving Nazi imagery).

In addition to "Vogue," the opening sequence seems to recall Madonna's "Evita" period (when she made "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" a hit). Gaga is dressed to mourn whomever is in the casket behind her — perhaps the titular Alejandro? — and it would be easy to assume that she's attending a state funeral, which would mean Gaga flipped the gender roles in the original story of the Peróns (in reality, it was Juan who buried Eva).

Later, Gaga strips to her underwear and dominates a scantily clad dancer tied to a bed. While Madonna is no stranger to the imagery surrounding bondage and submission, that image most faithfully recalls the Material Girl's "Human Nature," which saw her dressed in black pleather and dancing seductively with the assistance of ropes and a riding crop.

But the biggest nod to Madonna's past certainly comes with all the religious imagery. Gaga dresses as a nun, swallows rosary beads and stands in front of a row of crosses at various points during the clip, which brings to mind Madonna's classic video for "Like a Prayer." In fact, there are even video clips of flames in the background of one of the dance scenes in "Alejandro," which could easily have been lifted wholesale from the moment in Madonna's clip when she sings among a field of flaming crosses.

There are a number of other cultural references that slip out of "Alejandro" (Gaga clearly enjoys the work of film director Fritz Lang), but even the gun-barrel-sporting bra she wears at the end could be mistaken for that conical top Madonna made famous during the Blonde Ambition Tour. Of course, "Alejandro" director Steven Klein has worked as a photographer for Madonna over the past few years, so it's quite possible that these are merely the influences he has picked up while working with her. But if Gaga really is making an attempt to define herself as a next-gen Madonna who also pays homage to her elders, then there are worse paths to follow.

She actually sounds like Madonna in the semi-spoken segment.

  3. This goes without saying really.

Madonna isn't even necessarily my favourite artist - other artists I like better musically and clearly there's people who have more talent, vocally, lyrically and musically. That also is a given. But when you add up all the memories and everything, oh yes. She's always there. She is the complete package and the sum is greater than the parts, she is everything. So I'll always come back to here (unless there's another American Life :doofus: ). This is my religion. :wow:

There are fanatics of each artist and the fanatic tends to believe that you should only like that particular artist. also, they tend to become hostile if someone says something negative about that artist. No one is perfect. I too like Madonna for the entire package and several of her hit recordings, especially the dance. However, I also like some current artists for certain recordings and past artists, like Connie Francis and others for their vocal ability and charisma. These artists also have their fanatics, especially Connie and for them, as for many madonna fanatics, she can do no wrong.

  4. Details:

Rockin Connie spotlights the up-tempo side of the artist whose incredible 56 entries on Billboard magazines Hot 100 mark her as the biggest-selling female of her day. Perhaps best known for her sentimental ballads, Connie recorded in a variety of styles, and for every Among My Souvenirs in her vast catalogue there exists a terrific rocker like Gonna Git That Man, Kiss n Twist or Im Gonna Be Warm This Winter. Connie had been singing songs such as Im Walkin in her stage act since 1957 and with her boyfriend Bobby Darin she frequently visited the Apollo Theater in Harlem to see James Brown, Ray Charles and LaVern Baker, whose performances ensured that she was well schooled in the art of R&B.

Tunes like Hollywood, Johnny Darlin and Robot Man show that she had an intuitive feel for rocknroll. Drawn from the period 1957 to 1966, our compilation includes cult favourites Fallin, Eighteen and Valentino, obscure gems Love Eyes, Lollipop Lips and Its A Different World and two songs co-written by the recently departed Ellie Greenwich.

  5. ^Mad, the list is for *Hot 100* hits- Connie has 53. If it was a list for most chart hits (taking into account pre-Hot 100 charts), then Connie would have 56. Elvis Presley had a ton of pre-Hot 100 hits, but for purposes of talking about the Hot 100, just singles charting from August 1958-on are counted.

Top Pop Singles counts it all, though, so there ya go. :)

Mimi would be the one who could challenge for most top 10s, but consider this: She scored 20 of her top 10s in the 90s, and "Obsessed" is just her 7th of this decade; she could score an 8th for the decade with the next single, but as you can see, it isn't as easy as it used to be.

Yes, you are correct. However, when you deal with overall chart success, the original list reflects this and not the Hot 100 which penalizes artists such as Connie and Elvis as they had chart hits prior to the Hot 100 chart.

  6. Here is an updated look at the women who've made the most Hot 100 visits:

    73, Aretha Franklin

    56, Dionne Warwick

    55, Madonna

    53, Connie Francis

    48, Brenda Lee

    41, Barbra Streisand

    40, Mariah Carey

    40, Diana Ross

    39, Janet Jackson

39, Whitney Houston "Million Dollar Bill"

The above is not an accurate account Connie had 56, 3 before the 25th anniversary in 1958. Therefore, Connie holds the second placement.

FEMALE ARTISTS WITH THE MOST HOT 100 HITS

    Aretha Franklin (76)

    Dione Warwick (56)

    Connie Francis (56)

    Madonna (53)

    Janet Jackson (39)

    Whitney Houston (37)

    Mariah Carey (35)

Connie Francis in reply to Larry King regarding Madonna overtaking Connie........."I think Madonna is talented but I have to say, Sorry Madonna. Like a Virgin should have been my song. I lived it!" (reflecting upon her father's reputation of overprotecting her).

I guess she forgot that the song was Like A Virgin and not I'm A Virgin :lmao:

Well, you know what she means. Larry expected Connie to say something negative about Madonna and instead, with her wit, thought of that to say.

  8. Connie Francis in reply to Larry King regarding Madonna overtaking Connie........."I think Madonna is talented but I have to say, Sorry Madonna. Like a Virgin should have been my song. I lived it!" (reflecting upon her father's reputation of overprotecting her).

  9. ^That's fine. But, as noted, Brenda Lee then should be listed as having 50 hits, to include those two 1957 hits.

I know that in Billboard's Hot 100 50th anniversary issue, it only looked at acts' Hot 100 history (hence, the 50th anniversary). That's why Elvis Presley was "shortchanged," as he had a lot of hits from 1956-August 1958 on the Best Sellers, Jukebox, Top 100, etc. charts, before the Hot 100 chart began. THe 1956-August 1958 period must be taken into account for all other instances when talking about chart history and success.

Yes, and hence Connie would have her 1957-1958 hits included to the sum of 56. So, in actuality the list noted on the first post of this topic is the more accurate for artist's success. Connie would have had a 57th had she not pulled Robot Man for some reason. She, however, did not pull it in the UK and it ended up reaching the #2 spot there.

  10. Connie actually had three of her 56 chart entries peak in the pre-Hot 100 era. So that should be accounted for, no? Because it looks like it has for Brenda Lee, who had two hits in 1957 that charted on pre-Hot 100 charts. I suspect that "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is only counted as one entry (even though it re-charted on two different occasions)- so, if we want to count Lee's two 1957 hits, it would be 50 entries that she has- that, or subtract from Francis' total ("The Majesty of Love" peaked at 93 in 1957, and then pre-Hot 100 hits in 1958 were "Who's Sorry Now" and "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry." "Stupid Cupid" charted a week before the Hot 100 debuted, though Top Pop SIngles has its peak on the Best Sellers chart (No. 14) listed as its peak.

OK. Thanks. That explains it. I knew Connie had 56. The funny thing is that although The Majesty Of Love, a pre-Who's Sorry Now single, only went into the 90s on the charts, it eventually became a million seller after Connie became an international superstar. It sold on the merits of her fame.

  11. Chart Beat at Billboard.com:

Here is a look at the legendary female artists to make the most visits to the Hot 100, followed by the dates of their first charted hits:

    73, Aretha Franklin (March 4, 1961)

    56, Dionne Warwick (Dec. 8, 1962)

    54, Madonna (Oct. 29, 1983)

    53, Connie Francis (Dec. 2, 1957)

    48, Brenda Lee (March 2, 1957)

    41, Barbra Streisand (April 4, 1964)

    40, Diana Ross (April 25, 1970)

    40, Mariah Carey (June 2, 1990)

The song is also Carey's 33rd top 40 hit, tying her with Francis. Among women, Carey and Francis trail only Madonna (48) and Franklin (43) for most top 40 titles.

    Madonna (48)

    Aretha Franklin (43)

    Connie Franis (33)

    Mariah Carey (33)

Connie had 56 chart hits as noted above, not 53. See the initial post. Therfore, Connie is tied with Dionne. The top 40 number, however, is correct.

  12. who's connie francis? and what did she sing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connie_Francis ------Connie is really the first female superstar of the rock era whose career peaked from 1958 to 1970 when she was brutally raped. She then went into seclusion for several years and then returned and now plays several concerts a year throughout the world, always tremendously received. She was the Madonna of her time, according to many, and blew open the door for female artists. She has sold hundreds of millions of records and recorded in just about every genre and is considered to be the most versatile artist. With a strong and distinctive voice, clear as a bell, her voice is immediately recognizable. She has not recorded in many years and still holds the distinction of being number 3 in Billboards top 40. Until the early 2000s, she was the top selling female artist of all time and she was for a long time the top female artist throughout the world. She was also the top female concert act. She has had many million sellers and recorded in 14 languages. Some of her million sellers: Who's Sorry Now, Mama, Lipstick on Your Collar, Stupid Cupid, Everybody's Somebody's Fool, Where The Boys Are. The last recording was from her first motion picture and the vocals on this recording are often described as the most perfect vocals ever recorded. She had a great voice and currently, her voice has returned, critics say. There is plenty about her on the Internet. It always astounds me that some have not heard of her, but then her self-imposed seclusion has a great deal to do with this. In addition, she donated millions to Victims Rights and is actually responsible for the Victim's Rights Laws. She is responsible for newer hotel security laws. She continues to be loved by millions. She influenced Gloria Estefan, who will play her in her biomovie, LeeAnn Rimes, Agnetha of ABBA, Anne Murray, Belinda Carlisle, LuLu, Christina Aguilera, Bonnie Tyler, to name a few.
