  1. MDNA,' Madonna's great new CD, is an exhilarating return to her pop-dance past

Album is loaded with upbeat songs like 'Give Me All Your Luvin' ' and 'Superstar'

    Powered by Inform

    Madonna by Mert + Marcus.

    5 STARS

The 53-year-old superstar turns back the clock on her latest disc.

On her latest CD, Madonna chirps through a rash of odes to puppy love, blows out the biggest bubblegum song of her career (“Give Me All Your Luvin’”), and corrals the whole disc under a title that cheekily refers to a hallucinogenic drug.

Do these sound like the moves of a 53-year-old mother of four to you?

In fact, much of “MDNA” — out Tuesday — has more the flip zip of a disc by Katy Perry or Ke$ha than something by a woman who may be older than both their mothers. Then again, we are talking about Madonna, a woman who, at this point, seems just as hellbent on giving the finger to expectations about age that she once gave to assumptions about sex.

That stance alone might be enough to give Madonna’s youthful channelings a sense of defiance rather than desperation. But the music itself is what makes her flagrant act of regression not embarrassing but both pointed and exciting.

“MDNA” expands on the best elements of Madonna’s last CD, 2008’s “Hard Candy,” her most easily embraced disc since her very first. For “Candy,” the singer abandoned her least attractive feature — her self-importance. Finally, Madonna stopped marring her albums with songs meant to educate us about starving children, world politics or (gag) spiritual growth. Instead, she gave fans what they wanted all along: pitched dance anthems that doubled as smart pop songs.

Once again, upbeat tracks dominate “MDNA.” The sole ballad, the droopy “Masterpiece,” comes from another source: the soundtrack to the Madonna-directed bomb of a film “W.E.” Better, Maddy has ditched that post-“Evita”/post-elocution-lessons voice to sing again like either a snotty or an ironically innocent imp. In “Turn Up the Radio,” she sounds blissfully infantile. In “Girl Gone Wild,” she plays teen bad girl with nutty verisimilitude.

It helps that the songs themselves have so much snap coursing through them. “I’m Addicted” and “Some Girls” have the dark disco élan of druggier dance club anthems — just the thing for your next trip into a K-hole. “I’m a Sinner” and “Superstar” show a Cee Lo-style love for ’60s Day-Glo pop. They rate among her zippiest songs ever.

So many good tracks crowd the disc, in fact, that even the four extras on the deluxe version rate as must-owns.

The dance songs that dominate aren’t pushing mainstream club music ahead, as Madonna did on albums like “Erotica” or “Ray of Light.” But they’re in step with the most pleasurable tics and beats of now.

Some listeners will see the aftermath of Madonna’s divorce from Guy Ritchie reflected in the lyrics. But the four cuts that promise to be the most autobiographical contradict each other. Two strike an apologetic or regretful tone (“Best Friend” and “I F--ed Up,” both in the deluxe version). The other pair turn vindictive (“I Don’t Give A,” and “Love Spent”).

The only song that inescapably mines Madonna’s life for material — “I Don’t Give A” — reads as too literal and, so, self-indulgent. Worse, it suffers from a draggy melody. The song gossip-lovers may most wish were about her ex — “Gang Bang,” in which she imagines not just gunning a boyfriend down but chasing him into hell to do it again — is a hoot. It’s also historic. It may be the world’s first murder-ballad-as-disco song.

Better, the piece references Cher’s zippy ’60s hit “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down).” Couple that with a reference to “The Beat Goes On” in “B-Day Song,” plus Madonna’s queenly getup at this year’s Super Bowl, and it seems as if the star has, at last, fulfilled a goal many of us have long held for her: She’s becoming Cher.

Still, the album’s greater feat has a far more subversive, if not superhuman, dimension. It finds Madonna aging in the most nose-thumbing way possible — in reverse

A raunchy video for the latest single by Madonna has been banned from being seen by under-18s on YouTube.

The video for Girl Gone Wild features the 53-year-old singer dancing in black PVC hotpants with topless male dancers in black tights and stiletto heels.

YouTube rules say videos can be restricted if they contain ‘nudity and dramatised or implied sexual conduct’.

Still got it: Madonna shows off her flexibility in her music video for Girl Gone Wild

Sex appeal: The 53-year-old doesn't hold anything back in the newly released raunchy video

Fans who want to watch the five-minute black-and-white film on the site have to sign in to website Google – YouTube’s parent company – and confirm their name and date of birth.

A spokesman for Google said the video breached ‘community guidelines’. It is understood Madonna has been sent a list of scenes that must be cut if the restriction is to be lifted.

Madonna’s video for the single Justify My Love was banned by MTV in 1990. The star’s spokesman Liz Rosenberg said: ‘Some things never change.’

Skimpy: The sexy video is shot in black and white and sees Madonna scantily clad

Living up to its namesake: Madonna gyrates up against the wall in one of the scenes

Bondage: Part of the music video shows Madonna's silhouette as she dances while in chains

The video has a distinct bondage style and appears to be something of a rehash of her Sex era.

At one point the pop icon can be seen enjoying an embrace with several topless and oiled up young men, who later dance around in just leggings and stilettos.

The highly anticipated video was released on the internet today and quickly became a top trending topic on Twitter.

Users of the social networking site had varying opinions, although some did their best to fuel the ever-present row between Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Raunchy: Madonna is embraced by several topless and oiled up young men

Moving and shaking: Madonna then joins the men to show off some seductive choreography

Suggestive: Madonna gets up close and personal with her extras in the series of racy scenes

It was suggested by some Gaga fans that Madonna took inspiration from the video for Alejandro.

    However others scotched this idea.

One Twitter user, Callum J R Davies, wrote: ‘So Madonna stole Girl Gone Wild form Alejandro, but that was taken from Vogue, Express Yourself & Human Nature... Madonna stealing her self. [sic]’

Most people had praise for the video and one Twitter fan described it as ‘breathtaking’.

Dramatic: Madonna looks striking with her platinum and dark lips in the video

Flaunting her figure: The fitness fanatic certainly isn't shy of showing her athletic shape

Madonna's 'Girl Gone Wild' Video: Five Key Nods To Her Past

From 'Vogue' to 'Human Nature,' MTV News points out the many nods to the Queen of Pop's legendary music videos.

    By John Mitchell

The video for video for "Give Me All Your Luvin," "GGW" is not plot-driven, but rather an assemblage of striking images that recall the dark, sexed-up era she ushered in with her "Vogue" video and which reached its apex with the release of her "Sex" book and Erotica album.

Madonna makes references to her iconic past throughout the video, meshing vintage M with her current self seamlessly. Below are the five key references we noticed in the "Girl Gone Wild" clip:

    "Erotica"

From Madonna's big, diva-like bleach-blond hair to those chains and leather-brief-wearing men, the dark, sexy vibe here is pure "Erotica"-era Madge. The clip for "Erotica" was markedly grittier, employing camera filters and sleazy locations (and, you know, bridles and whips) to give off an S&M vibe. If "Girl" isn't as gritty in its approach to sex, it's also far less off-putting. The sex stuff in the "Erotica" video is more of an artful expression of fetishism than it a series of "wow, that's hot" moments, like those featured in "GGW." But as usual, M delivers plenty of edgy eye candy.

    "Vogue"

Those moves! Those angular, cutting arm, leg and body movements. Check. A bunch of scantily clad male dancers posing in formation. Check. In addition to being shot entirely in black-and-white, the dancing in "Girl Gone Wild" is a direct callback to the sharp moves from "Vogue." A few times in the video (check 1:10), Madonna and her dancers are definitely "vogueing" — or at least as close to it as she's gotten since she struck her most famous pose in 1990. There's also something to be said for the gay culture references in both videos. Madonna made vogueing mainstream in 1990 with her hit, but the highly stylized form of dance was actually born in the late-'80s Harlem gay ballroom scene (see the amazing documentary "Paris Is Burning" if you want to know where vogueing really came from). She embraced the connection then and appears to be doing the same here. In "GGW," we have two male models gnawing on the same apple, dancers in heels (and little else) and many, many suggestive close-ups celebrating the male form.

"Human Nature" The "Human Nature" video is most remembered for Madonna's black latex bodysuit, and she resurrects the look for "GGW ." Beyond the suit itself, the "Nature" video also cast Madonna and her dancers in all black and set them against an all-white background, a style choice she uses frequently throughout "Girl." Like the "GGW" clip, the vid for "Nature" was directed by a well-known fashion photographer, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who also helmed Madonna's controversial video for "Justify My Love."

    "Justify My Love"

Speaking of which, Her Madgesty is getting awful handsy with her sexy dancers here, and late in the video, we find Madonna and her dancers really going for it, writhing in a pile and feeling each other up. The "Love" video was, of course, banned from MTV in 1990 for its depictions of sex acts. Set in a voyeuristic hotel, the "Love" clip includes what we can only refer to as an orgy sequence, and she recalls that a bit here, albeit in a tamer fashion. The scene in "GGW" is less explicit because it's not as direct about its subject matter — being sexy is part of the "GGW" narrative, while making a grand observation about full-on sex was at least part of the point of "Justify My Love."

    "Like a Prayer"

Madonna wouldn't be Madonna without a direct reference to religious iconography. Here, we get a dancer wearing a crown of thorns. Her video for "Like a Prayer" famously featured Catholic symbols, including stigmata and burning crosses, and a dream about making love to a saint on an alter. Madonna herself has even donned a crown of thorns onstage. During her performance of "Live to Tell" on her Confessions Tour, Madonna sang from a massive mirrored cross while sporting the crown.

In Day Two of an exclusive interview with The Sun, Madonna branded the legendary fashion designer's comments "horrible" and "ridiculous".

Last month, the eccentric Chanel designer claimed Tottenham-born Adele was "a little too fat" when he guest-edited a French magazine.

But Madonna, 53, stuck up for the Grammy-winner, hitting back: "That's horrible. That's ridiculous, that's just the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

"I don't like it when anybody says anything bad about anyone — I don't like it. Adele's a great talent and how much she weighs has nothing to do with it."

Madonna, who has won seven Grammys and two Brit awards, explained how she has sustained a career in music spanning more than a quarter of a century — and said it is decent advice for Adele, 23, to stay on the right track.

No weigh ... Adele was labelled 'fat' by Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld

She said: "The thing for Adele to remember is at the end of the day, whether you rise or fall, it has so much to do with how you sustain yourself and keep your integrity and your inner strength.

"It is all about who you surround yourself with — friends and people who really do care about you, and care about your well-being beyond being a superstar. That's the most important thing."

Over the past six months, two of the brightest female solo stars have passed away in tragic circumstances.

Last July Amy Winehouse died aged just 27 after suffering a public battle with drugs and alcohol.

Then last month Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel bath in the Beverly Hilton in LA. She was 48.

'Horrible' ... Madonna has hit out at Karl for his comments about Adele

Like all music fans, Madonna was shocked by the deaths before their time.

She said: "I, probably like everybody else, was hit by this shocking sense of disbelief – especially with Whitney Houston.

"It had not been a secret, the struggles Amy had been through — both brilliant, brilliant artists and obviously both huge losses.

"But when these things happen, I'm always shocked by the first thing you say — 'It's such a loss' — which doesn't quite cover it.

"Then you reflect and you think, 'How did it happen? How did the people around them allow it to happen?'

"We've lost so many great artists that way when you think about it. So history just kind of repeats itself over and over.

Star files ... how Madonna and Adele compare

"One thing I was struck by with Whitney Houston is I remember she sort of came out as a singer around the same time I did.

"I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, 'Oh my God. She's such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.'

"I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence.

"I was watching a documentary about Serge Gainsbourg, the French songwriter, and there's a famous talk show he did that happened a while back when Whitney was just starting.

"It was funny, because I'd just watched it the week before she died, where he was making a kind of play for her on national television and he was basically saying in French that he wanted to 'f' her — and the look of shock on her face...

Gone too soon ... Amy Winehouse

"I mean, she was so innocent and so young, and so cute, and really she blushed.

"And I was thinking, 'We are all innocent at one stage in our life. It's just interesting, the paths our lives take.'

"I was struck by that — how well she started and where she ended up and the tragedy of it."

Madonna is about to release her twelfth studio album, MDNA, and kicked off the promo cycle for the release with a high-profile gig during half-time of the Super Bowl last month.

The gig, with Brit M.I.A and New York rapper Nicki Minaj, sparked huge controversy in the US when M.I.A flicked a middle finger at the camera.

If you blinked, you would have missed it. But it didn't stop a conservative audience complaining in their thousands — with a very different finger of blame pointing at Madonna.

'We've lost so many great artists' ... Whitney Houston died in February

But the mum-of-four has mixed views about the uproar. She said: "Well, you know, the thing is we were in NFL territory.

"We were in the sacred ground of football and I think that it's a very important and well-viewed event.

"It was accepted and understood by everyone performing that we would be — what's the word I'm looking for — politically correct.

"I think the NFL were more worried about me than anything else, thinking that I was going to do something crazy or provocative. And I really had no intention of doing something shocking.

"I was working too hard in putting the show together to think about how I was going to do something to p*ss people off.

"They fought hard for me to get me more rehearsal time, and to give me what I wanted creatively for the show.

Flipping out ... M.I.A caused outrage after she swore during the Super Bowl

"I felt like I owed them to give them back what they wanted.

"So on that level, I was upset because I knew that I got some people into trouble that really went forward for me.

"And I don't wanna do that — I don't want anybody to get in trouble at my expense because they worked so hard to give me what I wanted, so there's that side of it.

"On the other hand, I didn't know M.I.A did it, and everybody was outraged about it so I viewed the footage and I kind of almost missed it.

"And I was like, 'Oh, okay'. It didn't seem like that big a deal at the end of the day, so there's two sides to the story.

"You know, that's her thing, it's pretty punk rock and actually, in the bigger picture of things, much crazier things have happened."

Fans around the UK and Ireland have already bought tickets to see Madonna perform this summer in London, Edinburgh and Dublin.

And she hopes the shows will cause as much of a stir with her own fans in the stadium.

On stage ... Madonna performing with M.I.A right, and Nicki Minaj, left

She said: "Oh God, I hope somebody is going to give the middle finger at my show. It probably won't be me because I've done it too many times.

"I hope I have some ideas. The creative well is dry but I just started rehearsals last week and mostly I have been focusing on music.

"I do have ideas and I have a lot of work ahead of me. I'm incredibly anxiety-ridden about it."

There is no sign of Madonna packing up her fishnets and leotard either — even though she has passed the half century.

And fans will be pleased to hear she is as motivated as ever to carry on her illustrious career.

She said: "I guess I love doing what I do. I have a voice, I have opinions, I have things I wanna say.

"I love music, I love telling stories. So I guess as long as I feel that way I'll keep doing what I'm doing."

I donot think the albums being given away with concert tickets will count towards her sales.

The price is higher than most albums.

Madonna fever heats up Dubai as tickets go on sale

Tickets for Madonna's concert in Abu Dhabi on June 3 goes on sale today (SUPPLIED)

As part of her latest world tour US pop star Madonna is all set to entrall fans in Abu Dhabi this summer. And the Emirates is all ready beginning to feel the heat.

Tickets for her June 3 concert went on sale today (February 27) at Virgin Megastores outlets in Mall of Emirates and Dubai Mall and a decent crowd had already queued up early morning before the booths could open.

'Emirates24|7' saw a cross-section of fans - from mothers with kids in prams to teenage students and office-goers patiently waiting for their turn.

Considering this is a Monday morning, the crowd turnout has been substantial. While some over-enthusiastic fans were disheartened on not witnessing a stampede others heaved a sigh of relief at being able to peacefully purchase their tickets.

Fadi Ghanem, 27, said: "I got here at 10am anticipating long queues, but it's not too bad." He planned to buy Dh250-tickets for his seven friends and was not sure how many one person is allowed to purchase.

Flash Entertainment allowed eight tickets of the general admission category to be sold per person, prompting one Janet Ester to say: "That's a bit much don't you think? Surely four per person is good enough to allow others further up in the line to have a chance at the cheaper tickets?"

Swapnil Joshi, a college student, said: "I had class so I couldn't get here any earlier than 11.30am, but I'm not complaining."

"I called in sick from work today to get here," said Mark P, refusing to give his full name, lest he gets caught by the boss, he said. "Just to make it clear, I'm just here to earn brownie points with my girlfriend. I couldn't care less."

Meanwhile, classic Madonna tracks such as 'Like A Virgin' and "Fever' created the right mood at the outlets.

Tickets for the Madonna June 3 concert went on sale today Virgin Megastores in Mall of Emirates. People had queued up early morning before the booths could open. Dubai: That’s it. All 22,000 tickets to see Madonna perform at Yas Arena, Abu Dhabi, on June 3 sold out on Monday, according to organisers Flash Entertainment.

“The Abu Dhabi show marks the first time Madonna has performed in this region. We knew from the day we announced the show that tickets were sure to sell out extremely quickly. Her fan reaction has been overwhelming and with immediate sell out, Madonna’s show in Abu Dhabi now holds the record for the most popular event we have ever staged,” a spokesman for Flash said.

Madonna fans queued up on Monday morning to buy tickets for her UAE debut concert and cheered as counters opened at exactly midday as promised at Virgin Megastore outlets in Mall of the Emirates and The Dubai Mall on Monday.

At Mall of the Emirates, bean bags and chairs were laid out for those who came early. Charmaine Borg, first in line, said she came to the mall at 7.30am for the midday sale start.

Marton Broetel, a visitor from Germany, said it was his birthday on Monday and that he was treating himself to Madonna tickets.

“I need to do some budget planning with airline tickets and all but Madonna is worth it,” he said.

Shylla Sandava said she took the day off from work to stand in line. “I tried to buy tickets at the pre-sale but it didn’t work out. I didn’t want to take any more chances so here I am,” she said.

Each customer was allowed to purchase eight tickets each.

At the Virgin Megastore outlet in The Dubai Mall, staff were trying to lighten things up as people queued up and Madonna’s tracks played loudly in the background.

Honelyn Igle, 31, a Dubai resident since 2007, was the first out with her two tickets. She said she had been at the store since 9am.

“It wasn’t as crazy as I expected but I wasn’t taking any chances,” she said.

One happy customer, who bought eight General Admission tickets for Dh495 each, said he was planning to sell them for double later.

Meanwhile, some fans who were waiting to purchase tickets online at thinkflash.ae had to wait in a virtual queue for about 30 minutes before gaining access.

Organiser Flash Entertainment had previously announced that only 22,000 tickets will go on sale for the Madonna concert, only her second stop in the World Tour to promote her 12th studio album, MDNA, out March 26. The first phase of the tour will cover multiple cities in Asia, North America and Europe.

Tickets for Istanbul’s upcoming Madonna concert, scheduled to take place on June 7, are already nearly sold out just two days after going on sale.

The only remaining tickets are in the standing area and are going for 165 Turkish Liras.

Ticket prices range from 100 to 600 liras, some of the highest ticket prices of Madonna’s 2012 World Tour.

Madonna will take the stage June 7 at Istanbul's Türk Telekom Arena, performing for Turkish fans for the first time in 19 years. The show in Istanbul will be the first leg of her highly anticipated 25-country European tour, which will include stops in London, Paris and Berlin.
