  1. the only other thing I can come up with is maybe they are looking to sell a live broadcast of the tour and they think the best deal would come if Madonna hasn't been seen live on TV since the SB- with the ratings she got there (higher than the game) that could be a lot of $$$

I don't think anyone would give big cash for a Madonna show after what happened with Confessions on NBC.

  2. I think bluejean got it all. The lack of promo is intentional and was planned way before. The first week of album sales didnt impressed me at all. I mean, she did better with hard candy, a first spot is expected by a Madonna album so no big surprise here. I think we all gonna see the album falling free on the charts. I wish be wrong for sure.

But look at the singles! Its embarrassing! Madonna never suffered in her career to have a hit. And now look at this. GMAYL is her worst lead single ever (in the charts) and dont let me start with GGW, is a total flop! I don't know what is happening! I dont blame the radios, because they always played madonna songs before. But this time is different, is like interscope and Madonna doesn't want to be played! Is crazy I know! In my opinion is a total lack of respect with her fans. Seriously, I love the album, I like all singles, I'm sure I will adore the tour. But is not just this. I want to see my idol topping the world chart with amzing songs again!

Maybe I'm crying too much I know. But it is what I'm feeling right now.

Honestly I don't mean to be rude but who cares. Madonna obviously doesn't. I think she's beyond whoring around TV shows to get ONE MORE hit. She just wants to do her work and present her vision. I was a little butthurt at it too in the beginning but I think she's making the right choice. How long can she play that game? OH ELLEN LETS DANCE TO MY NEW SONG GIRL GONE WILD YAY. It's just silly.

  3. I don't blame her for not doing the usual rounds of silly interviews. She did it for W.E. which she seemed a lot more passionate to push. There's no point in doing it again and answering the same questions. As for the performance, she did the ultimate show which was the Superbowl and now is focusing her attention on the tour like she always does. What else can she do? Go on that silly little Letterman stage and do GGW with Kazaky? I just can't see it. Everything was timed around the Superbowl, ticket sales, album presales. She probably told them that's all she was willing to do. As for Guy and his 'talk to me in a year' tweets, he obviously means talk to me in a year when I can flaunt the tours huge earnings. Like Madonna will suddenly have a change of heart and do TV shows in Korea or something. If anything, he should just shut up and stop arguing with fans on Twitter like he's a 13 year old girl. Seriously, twitter worst ever.

  4. Looking at the choreography in the vid again. She is not very .. err .. feminine is she? Her moves appeared rough and rough compared to the dancer.

Are you referring to GGW? I mean I know the thread says GIRL GONE WILD I was just wondering if there was a rehearsal video or something since I find her dancing in the video BETTER than the dancers'. It has more character where the dancers just really execute the moves and it's a bit dry. Madonna's dancing is juicier.

  5. Point: These die hard fans 80% atleast would have purchased the album anyway obviously.

    my 2 cents.

They probably bought it anyway regardless of the bundle.

Interscope were brilliant in this case. They obviously knew the Superbowl would be the only real promo Madonna would do and they used the hype from that to fuel pre-sales AND to fuel ticket sales which helped sell extra copies. Sorry, but that's a good strategy.

  6. Billboard says redeems were 185,000. Article:

Editor's Note: What Role Did Bundling and Exclusives Play in Madonna and Justin Bieber's Big Debuts?

By Bill Werde (@bwerde), New York

Madonna has the no. 1 album on this week's Billboard 200. She sold 359,000 copies of MDNA compared to Lionel Richie's Tuskegee, which opens with a really impressive 199k first week. But many of Madonna's sales came through a bundle option, in which fans who purchased tickets for her upcoming tour received a code that could be redeemed for either a physical CD or a digital download of the album.

Madonna's 'MDNA' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200, Lionel Richie Bows at No. 2

Justin Bieber's new single "Boyfriend" debuts at no. 2 on the Hot 100. Fun.'s "We Are Young" continues its incredible run atop the greatest songs chart. No doubt, true Beliebers will be sad to note that "Boyfriend"'s Hot 100 score did not include meaningful points from plays on streaming services, including on-demand subscription companies a la Spotify, as Team Bieber decided to withhold the song from such services for much of its first charting week. The "Boyfriend" download was also exclusive to iTunes, restricting the buying option for those that do not frequent the Apple retail store.

There are plenty of people crying foul on both fronts. Those people should probably calm down. Both examples offer a glimpse into the complicated, largely experimental and ever-changing world of marketing, distributing and monetizing new releases in today's marketplace.

Of Madonna's 359,000 sold, trusted sources tell Billboard that somewhere in the area of 185,000 came from the bundle/redemption code. Sacre bleu, you say, doing math: 359 - 180 = 179. Mr. Richie's 199,000 is the true king-making total this week!

But that's completely ridiculous. With all respect deserved and paid to the beloved songs of Mr. Richie, think about two important points. One: Madonna fans who redeemed that code are not receiving the album for free. The price of Madonna's album was bundled into the ticket purchase. I can understand why there's confusion about this. Even the CEO of Ticketmaster tweeted that fans buying tickets got "a free copy of MDNA." (The March 30 tweet has since been taken down). Such is the less-than-fully-transparent nature of bundling.

But let's take a hypothetical for a second: the cost of MDNA wasn't bundled into the ticket price, or that Billboard doesn't count those sales. All 185,000 fans who used the Madonna redemption code were the first in line to buy tickets to her tour. These are her top fans, each of whom were eager to shell out anywhere from $50 to more than $350 for a seat. If no bundle existed, do you really think a large portion of these fans wouldn't have purchased the album? We'll never know for certain, of course. But I think it's a more than safe bet that Madonna has the no. 1 album in the U.S. under any circumstance - joining her deserved no. 1 debuts in at least 17 other countries, according to manager Guy Oseary's tweets.

For context, here are her recent albums' first-week sales, per Nielsen SoundScan:

    2008 - Hard Candy - 280K

    2005 - Confessions on a Dance Floor - 350K

    2003 - American Life - 240K

    2000 - Music - 420K

    1998 - Ray of Light - 371K

So you can see, given that MDNA has a nice buzz and single going, it's pretty much beyond reason to think that suddenly this album would sell substantially less than any recent one Madonna has released.

That said, let's wait and see what the drop-off is next week on sales of MDNA. Second weeks tend to follow a fairly predictable curve. And while it's far from a perfect science, it's one of the best bullsh-- detectors out there for an inflated first week. Billboard's head of charts Silvio Pietroluongo says that an iconic pop star's album will generally drop anywhere from 65 to 80 percent second week. If MDNA drops a lot more than that, it'll be an indication of the degree of first week inflation caused by bundling.

  7. Yeah that's why I asked really because top ticket was $350 for the last couple of tours anyway. Would you get it cheaper if you didn't buy the album? You would be a fool NOT to redeem it. So it's just a case of trying to subvert chart rules.

  8. Ok so two questions about this whole CD's with tickets thing. a. Do you have a choice to NOT pay for it when buying the ticket or are they forcing you to buy it and then it's a choice of claiming it or not and b. what if someone buys two or three tickets with the same order? Does he get three separate copies?

  9. 1. Girl Gone Wild 9/10 - Was not sure on this one at all at first but it's the ultimate grower. As someone here said very rave, and I just can't resist those heavy Sash!-style Eurodance chords getting deeper and deeper each time. This is the first Madonna single that actually sounds like a remix (OK there's its lesser predecessor Celebration but whatevs).

    2. Gang Bang 9/10 - Cool as fuck! Quite unlike anything she's done of course and I love the comparison to Patti Smith.

    3. I'm Addicted 10/10 - It doesn't get any better than this, though very reminiscent of past rave/trance tracks (it essentially uses Bobby Orlando as a template who modified previous touchstone LaDonna/Moroder with a harder variant on IFL), this is her deepest dance track ever.

Bye bye Get Together, you were just dance lite with clean pop production compared to this. Gotta love the drug references, at one point she almost talks about needle exchanges and it lives up to the title being very addictive.

    4. Turn Up The Radio 10/10 - In contrast to the previous track, despite heavy dance elements this is her best POP song in years. They boobed big time by not ensuring this was first single. Despite the dance pop vibe, this has some of her old 60s sunshine pop/Nuggets sound in there a la Beautiful Stranger which is a recurring theme in her work and this album!

It's very familiar and for some reason the verse melody is making me think a lot of "Sweet Child o' Mine", it does seem to have a similar theme in there about childhood and the world being tough as an adult which is one of pop's greatest and is very evocative, this is way beyond mindless dance pop. Several bits of the melody recall classic pop/rock songs and I'm not sure which ones but it stands out in its own right as a classic to add to that lineage.

    5. Give Me All Your Luvin' 4/10 - :lmao::lmao: :lmao: Alright to be fair this isn't "terrible", but it's bloody dull. Nothing worse than forced fun in a song that doesn't justify it. Sure enough as soon as it starts you can hear the tumbleweed. My least favourite part of it now is those drumrolls at the start before the actual Chant From Hell, ugh.. which signals this is clunker city.

    6. Some Girls 7/10 - This is somewhat nondescript and not a fave, very loud, obnoxious and annoying with that siren intro. You'd never believe a 58 year old would have done this song. :lmao: Which of course makes it all the more fabulous. I love the half rap where she lambasts bitter girls with fake tits. The problem I think I've had with it is that iTunes put GMAYL in a different folder from the rest of the album (there is a God!) so the relentless assault from the first few tracks doesn't soften this abrasive track which GMAYL might do if I would play it. So 6 or 7 for this.

    7. Superstar 6/10 - :lmao::lmao: Yes obviously I lied about this being her best song of all time, this sticks out as the obvious clunker. Lyrically we're transported back to grade school/American Life but even so has some nice stuff about Brando etc even if repeated. Thing is though, this has a very very strong melody so it's difficult to write off completely, it really sticks.

    8. I Don't Give A 7/10 - OMG it's the new American Life. Only good! And palatable if not relatable. This one's very inventive, love the choir sound. And this is the most post-modern song eva - with references to Wi-Fi passwords and twatter. Minaj is still an annoying little twerp but she's put to good use here.

    9. I'm A Sinner 8/10 - The BS beat here (can't he vary it or disguise it better at least?) is unfortunate and disappointing, as this is another great track.

    10. Love Spent 9/10 - This one is kind of similar to the previous I Don't Give A Fvck and I'm A Sinner but is easily the pick of the bunch and one of the best of the album. It's all about THAT spaghetti western guitar which is genius and gives this hooky song the hook among hooks. The references to that Mockney twat are plain to see with the compelling and clever lyrical content.

    11. Masterpiece 5/10 - I can't dismiss this completely as technically it's fine, but it just doesn't do anything for me at all. It's so cold and distant which is the point of course but no pathos here really.

    12. Falling Free 10/10 - This is glorious, her best album closer since Mer Girl which it's not far removed from in its structural weirdness and off the wall feel. Falls into the tradition of all her serious album closers since at least American Life but I haven't really loved any of those, last one I liked was Gone. This is the missing puzzle piece of the album and exactly what it needed, if she's going to do a ballad it has to count and this gives the album some balance which otherwise would be a fantastic hedonistic but somewhat hollow party album, this adds the depth.

    13. Beautiful Killer 8/10 - Excellent, this stands as more than just filler and like the others could easily slot in disc 1. The opening riff is somewhat familiar.

    14. I Fucked Up 9/10 - Standout! As someone who's tired of M's over reliance on swear words which can make her look a bit dim and inarticulate at times, and one who especially finds the use of swearing in music tired and distracting this is an absolute revelation. Though if Madonna used the "cunt" rather than "fuck" word all the time she would have won my heart - think how much better ILNY would be if she said "then you can cunt off!" :wow:

Anyway, I love the fast bits in this surprising ballad, which really work, again reminiscent of other stuff.

    15. B-Day Song 8/10 - Madonna does Britney does Cherilyn - the beat goes on! Again more 60s inflected pop a la BS after 3 other songs in this vein with Sinner, Radio and GMAYL. I love how celebratory this is, totally non bitter - though it almost sounds like she's singing "I'm a happy gurl" through gritted teeth and protesting a little too much. :demonic: This is extremely clever though and difficult to dislike, not a middle finger to the haters at all but it will no doubt annoy them even more which makes it even more hilarious.

    16. Best Friend 9/10 - Vadge takes a chainsaw to previous collaborator Cuntina Timberbitch's "My Love" and Timbaland/50 Cent's "Ayo Technology" for this sad/bitter Ritchie diatribe, the most fascinating and raw lyrically of the album, given an urgency by that driving music. Great ending.

I love this review and agree on pretty much everything, especially GMAYL. Those opening drums are the worst, I have to remind myself there's a great little song coming up to keep from skipping.
