  1. I can honestly say that when i saw paparazzi live on mtv i thought that (no mistake) her career would be over. Worst shit i saw ever! I dont get it! Its simply so horrible, so cheap, so try-hard that i thought everyone who got bitter n nasty about madonna would change their mind and get real but then the craze about her only started off :s people just lose taste and forgot what quality is

    Terrible

Quite interesting since a lot of people thought the same of Madonna back in 1984 when she debuted "Like A Virgin". Even her manager, thought her career would be over.

Of course, I'm not comparing Gaga's performance to Madonna's iconic moment. After all, I don't even remember it. So it's hardly "memorable"... at least for me. But as Madonna proved, just because some people trash and think someone is over, even before they got started, they end up sticking around for 30 years. It just proves music/entertainment is subjective. One person's trash is anothers treasure.

  2. Wait, are you guys joking about Shanti/ROL? That's literally one of her worst performances ever.

And Isaac, LAV was totally iconic, but I wouldn't call it a good performance. Same with "LAV/Hollywood." Controversial and iconic, but not very good.

My first thought as well. It worked back in 1984, and totally iconic, but if she had did that performance any other time in her career, especially after her other performances, people would have thought she had lost the plot. In fact, people thought that of her at the time she performed it, but I think it was all about the time and her being pretty new to the scene that it worked for her. Also, and it's a great moment for the very first VMA's.

For me, the 1990's Vogue performance was flawless. It set the bar for future productions on that show. I absolutely love the Express Yourself performance as well.

    "YEAH!"

  3. To each their own, I say. I think a lot of people are just stuck with this idea in how people should look or present themselves specifically based on their age. If Madonna wants to walk around with "grills" then let her. She isn't hurtning anyone. Lord help us if a middle age caucasion woman, goes out in public wearing grills on her teeth. LOL! What humors me is that she once again has managed to get people to look at her.... think about her...., talk about her. Good or bad, it still proves she has some relevance for anyone to take notice.

  4. I understand what you are saying, and I realize that Madonna merely mentioning a designer (or being photographed with a goddam vacuum cleaner) increases public interest to a level that rarely happens with other celebrities. But you can't buy human rights or pay to remove prejudice when Madonna appears in a short film about it. I'm just missing the information that makes this project so groundbreaking or potentially influential. Based on what we've heard so far - a 17 minute art film shot in black and white with Jean Paul Gaultier costumes that talks about freedom of expression and fighting ignorance - just makes me think: "Ok, it will be visual interesting but how does that alone change minds? What is the transformative substance?"

I understand I do not have all the data yet, but we all speculate on this board. I'm just not sold on it just yet. I imagine if we see images of Madonna having (implied) female circumcision or something truly psychologically disturbing it could have a deeper effect simply because we haven't seen a Western icon like her put into that situation before. All I have seen is her possibly blowing her head off with a gun and being man-handled by prison guards (all while looking very glamorous). Disturbing? Kind of. She already posed with a gun in her mouth for the American Life album promo shots, and got physically tortured and her stomach slashed in the "Die Another Day" video. I guess we'll see what this new movie brings to the table.

I really don't think I am being negative, just realistic. I love Madonna no matter what she does, but I don't have the same level of excitement with every project. The childrens' books were nice, but I didn't buy any for myself. X-Static Process was an interesting art installation, but I didn't go see it. The Next Best Thing had a pretty decent soundtrack, but I didn't go to see the movie.

    Tu capisci?

Certainly, we can say that about anything that raises awareness whether it's in a song, movie, short film, book or even a speech. Just because she's done certain things in her other projects that may resemble some of the things she did in this short film, doesn't mean it won't make an impact still. Besides, this is supposed to have a much deeper meaning and message behind it, then the things you brought up. Again, I am not saying that this film will make a huge impact or raise much awareness, but that can unfortunately be the same for anyone or anything that is trying to bring awareness on some issue. For me, I see her trying to start something... I guess in her own words... "A Revolution". It may go no where or it may in fact, start a chain of events to bring awareness to her cause. At this stage of the game, a creator (such as Madonna) has to believe what they are doing is going to bring some awareness. Even if her film changes only a small group of people's minds or inspires a small minority of people (and it will), she's succeeded in getting her message across. At least, she's trying.

And I really get it... some fans are just fans of her music only. They rather see her do nothing but record and perform music. I love that part of her as well, but I also see her as an entertainer who has explored other forms of expressing herself. It may not have been as successful as her music, but any fan who really thinks that she's going to simply do music to please them, doesn't really understand the sort of entertainer and person Madonna is and has evolved into over the years. We all have other interests than just what pays the bills. Unfortunately, some interests we have make no money, or costs us money. It's the same for Madonna. She's just always looking for ways to express herself in many ways than just her music.

  5. The official instagram of Material Girl has published this photo:

Maybe will she be traviling to LA tomorrow??

Why would she? The Show is in NY! Look at the ticket stubs.

Anyway, it's quite possible that she could attend for something that obviously doesn't need major rehearsal. Though, every year we hear she may attend, but she doesn't. I don't agree that "presenting" anything or anyone is beneath her. But I am quite humored how MTV still holds this AWARDS show on their channel when they rarely play the videos nominated or any video. Then again, they do have various other sister networks that do play videos.

  6. Yeah. I guess I was assuming the shoot would promote the "movie". Yep, I'm not excited for anything. Ha! Just kidding. Of course I will watch it. I just don't get the hype.

But the "hype" is to garner attention. I'm not claiming it will gain massive attention, but think of it, if it was some cause you're greatly interested in. If you had the influence and popularity of Madonna, wouldn't you take on issues that are important to you? Wouldn't you want as much "hype" behind it? Certainly you would. We can sit here and predict failure, but I rather be a bit more optimisitc. I'm sure Madonna is. After all, she does have a lot of fans. I'm sure she hopes that her fans will jump on board, and increase awareness. And They will. Whether it exceeds her expectations or not, isn't really anything we or she can control. Someone as successful as her will still make some waves no matter what she does.

  7. No offense to M, but this short film isn't going to achieve that. I respect her decisions to speak out about things, but really, I am not sure how a 17 minute film has any practical impact. Are crazy dictators going to watch it and say, "Ok, let's not kill anymore."

I'm sure she knows that her film isn't gonna change the world. But she's entitled to do her part in trying to make the world a better place, if not for herself, but for her children and possible grandchildren. Truth is, her film will gain more noteriety than most lesser known celebrities or anyone who isn't famous. Some will criticise it as something it's not, while others will appreciate it for what it is. There is definitely a trail to her influence in pop culture, so why not use that influence to tackle important social issues?

  8. Maybe I'm missing the media attention, but I only see fans (and haters) making a huge fuss over them. Anyway, part of me wonders if she's wearing them because Rocco's been wearing braces. Maybe there's an inside story to it all? Or she's simply doing it just for the fun of it. Interesting that she's been wearing them during a time she's not really in the public eye for any specific project. I personally think they look ridiculous, but I stil think she looks fuckin' fantastic in these latest pics.

  9. Oh, I so remember this moment in her career. It was just her mere precense that became the talk of the night for the following days. It was then the public, critics, media and fans alike started discussing the possibility of some work being done to her face. I still don't believe she's yet to go under the knife, but certainly there is no doubt she's had needles poked into her and other cosmetic enhancements. That smooth creamy pop look went on through the CONFESSIONS era before the real 'plump' injections came. .

  10. If one truly doesn't care how she charts, then they shouldn't care if it's bundled or not. For me, I don't care. Though, for the price of the ticket, I do think bundling an album/tour book with the ticket isn't a bad idea. But not for an additional cost at the price she sells tickets. And I don't see it as "cheating" either if it was counted towards the charts. Madonna tickets aren't cheap. No doubt her shows are worth the price, but why can't it be part of the ticket purchasing? After all, Madonna's tours are always representative of the current album. I think if I was an artist who is known for performing new music on tour, I'd want the concert goer to have every opportunity to hear the newly recorded music that may be featured in the show. And honestly, if someone is willing to pay the price she charges for a ticket, I'd think they'd want to own her music. I know that isn't always the case, but how the album is distributed and counted shouldn't matter as long as someone is actually knowingly purchasing the album. To me, it's just finding new ways to generate more sales or getting her music out there to more people.

  11. That tracklist was posted on madonna.com, minus the separation. :)

Still would like an official CD version in the USA: I don't think I'll be getting a digital copy.

Yeah, for a release like this, a digital "only" release seems pointless for more hardcore fans when we could easily rip the audio from DVD/BR ourselves in digital format. A CD would be more of a treat as well as a collectors item.

One thing though, don't most concert DVD's anymore have an option to just "play audio"? Of course, DVD's can be played in CD players, but other than in one's car, who owns just a stand alone CD player anymore when you are able to play CD's in DVD/BR players?

  12. It's an unpopular opinion, but I love the song. It grew on me. Now I can't stop playing it.

Is it one of her better more recent singles? Hell no. But if you take it as it is...a fun, frivolous pop song...who cares.

The tour version is amazing. And it was a great opener for the show. I remember playing it in the car one day, and my mother was like "who is this...is this Madonna?" I was expecting her to not like it...but she was like "hey, burn me a copy of this!" LOL!!!!!!!

Now the video... that was perfection.

Exactly. Much of her earlier career when she rose to mega status, her better received songs were simple and fun dance/pop songs. I'm not saying or claiming this compares to the classics, but many of her classics are simple, "fun" and "frivolous" pop songs.

  13. I already felt like Bedtime Stories was a mix bag as it is, but yes mostly made up of urban sounds. So if anything "Sanctuary" and the title track seems to be far more interupting to the flow of the album. Though, I'll excuse "Sanctuary" since it does have a similar tone to the other songs on the album. "Let Down Your Guard" is a great song, but it sounds a little too much like the earlier tracks which work on the album. I like "Don't Stop" even though it's just a simplistic song with not much depth compared to some of the other songs on the album.

  14. I think the idea of "payola" is extremely over-exaggerated by fans. In fact, a wealthy and successful artist like Madonna at this point in her career could afford to pay for every one of her songs to hit top ten if the whole "payola" thing was so true. Of course, some will claim, she's better than that, but then why now say it's okay to do it? Not only that, how do we know that she didn't do it long ago?

My thought... record companies tend to get behind some artsts more than others. Whatever the reason, they are willing to push them more. I'm not saying "payola" doesn't happen, but I also think radio execs tends to play a big role in what is played and supposedly they do these tests to find out which songs will be more receptive to their audiences than others. Doesn't mean it will prove to be successful for the song, but I know there have been some pretty awful songs that have been huge radio songs, while there have been other great songs out there that got the boot or never had a chance. And of course, artists who are newer who have had a few hits under their belt, tend to get free reign for awhile on radio. Radio knows there is a current audience listening to their stations for those artists.

  15. I love "Has To Be" and most definltely could have fit on the album, but I like "Mer Girl" as the closing track. It's a really poetic artsy track. I love when she includes these sort of songs on her albums. These songs tend to be personal and an unexpected treat as it usually doesn't sound like a typical Madonna song.

  16. I don't think that's true at all. Madonna needed a radio friendly breakout hit, something like 'Titanium', something of such quality that it enters into public consciousness well enough to break the age barrier she now faces on radio (im talking UK/euro here} GGW was never going to do that for her. It's derivative crap, the kind of thing Cheryl Cole would have rejected if offered.

I guess it's subjective because I felt like it was a good song for radio and if it was sung by somene younger, it would have got radio exposure. Though, I guess I can only speak for North America. Also, I do see your point regarding Europe and UK because that sort of music has been far more popular much longer than it's been in North America.

  17. I don't think it's "ahead" or "behind" it's times. I think it was very current and if it was a song by any other younger female artist, it probably would have been a bigger hit. I guess this is why so many fans dislike the song, because it is definitely represenative what radio has been playing. It could have been a decent hit if radio just played it, but radio is so controlled anymore and if you're over 40, you might as well forget radio. I personally love the song.

  18.

And the other great thing about her is that, though she may have peaked in terms of popularity, she is still releasing quality music. A lot of "aging" artists just can't recapture the glory of their early output. She can.

Exactly. In fact, some of the music on her MDNA could easily be huge hits if radio and the public got this silly notion out their head that 50 year olds can't make you get up off your feet or create a great mainstream song the public can enjoy. I think what's sad is that some "aging" artists tend to just go with the flow and accept that they can't produce music that fit the current times. They just assume they have to start singing more contemporary songs or standards. I see Madonna succeeding as Tina Turner has. Tina still produced quality music that was quite current at the time, and then went out on tour to make the real dough. I think Madonna will do this with far more with less breaks than Tina though. I can't see Madonna slowing down, even though, she deserves to.

  19. I think this is kinda what it boils down to. I'm afraid her #1 single days are over, regardless of what she releases. I love her and I want her to be endlessly successful, but realistically, radio won't play her and she's just not popular enough among the young folks (the ones who buy most of the music and have time to play Youtube videos on repeat all day) to generate an enormous #1 smash. I guess what we are debating now are varying degrees of mild success, which at the end of the day, don't really matter, as long as we still love her music.

BUT, if there's one thing she's proven time and time again, it's to never count her out, so I will fully admit that everything I just said could be a total crock and her biggest #1 hit may be yet to come! :tigger:

Totally agree. I've come to this realization for many years now. As much as I would love her to score more top tens or #1's, it's gonna be far more tougher for her as she grows older. I mean think about it? How many 55+ year olds have you seen do well on pop radio or top 40? Very few! She cannot compete with the youth dominated music scene. Nor do I think she cares to do so. Our society, unfortunately, seems to want to put age restrictions on music. This isn't anything new. It's been going on forever now. The arts tend to dismiss those who reach 40 or older, especially women. Madonna had her time on radio and the charts. It's gonna take some huge collaboration effort with something very mainstream and possibly with younger acts to get back on radio or score a #1 if even a top ten hit again. I can even see a possible "Cher-Believe" moment from Madonna in the future, where she releases a song at a perfect time where people are being nostalgic enough to enjoy another song from her. Other than that, she's graduated up to legend status with the likes of touring acts like The Rolling Stones and U2 and various other acts. The cool thing about Madonna is that she still is able to generate enough interest to pull in headlines which will always give her an edge on remaining semi-popular for years to come. As long as she keeps putting on spectacular shows as like her recent tours, people will pay to see her. Her side projects will always generate some buzz as well, eventhough they won't always be as successful as her music ventures.
