BSB's album was expected to sell more than it did, hence the initial 8m million shipment. Kinda like how WB shipped 2 million of Erotica- it was expected to sell better than it did.
That last line, to bring things back to MADONNA.
-
Realistically, there is no such thing as over certs, because if a label ships a certain amount of copies, that's what the it shipped- hence the cert. End of. It's always been about units shipped to retailers, other outlets, etc.- not how many units consumers buy. So, yes, Janet Jackson's latest album has shipped at least 1 million copies- it's sold 635,000+, and, yeah, you're going to see copies in stores around the country.
Now, obviously, there is such a thing as albums suffering from undercertifying- and SoundScan info supports that.

What an odd run on that Brazil chart- to gain in position each week from its debut?!?!
United World Chart
Down 14-27, 7th week- 68,000

We know SS doesn't tell the whole picture, so there's no point trying to undermine certs. We have no idea what kind of numbers Columbia House had (and the BMG numbers even seem a little fishy in spots, with few titles selling in a certain range, when you'd think, with all the titles in stock, it would be a LOT more).

Shania's debut album has scanned less than 1 million (it didn't even crack the Billboard 200!)
Maybe this week, I'll post some info for a couple other "divas." Mimi's GH has been scanning 1,500-1,600 a week, while Whitney's GH has been doing 600-700 on average. Janet's Design, a smiliar number. Any who had an album (or albums) as part of that Definitive promotion didn't see as big a jump as LAV.
-
They wouldn't mention Underwood- she continues to get decent airplay in the USA, whereas Madge only had one moderate airplay hit in the USA from her album- so, can't compare the two, commercially.
-
Well, there is no standalone CD (as far as I know), so all sales numbers include the DVD. Sales of the standalone DVD probably aren't comparable to the DVD/CD.
-
And, just a 9% drop- though the rank drop is in line with its run up until now.
Should finish with 6 weeks on (2 more than IGTTYAS).
-
nf, that list wasn't about the strongest works in many cases. Commercial success played a big part in it (they weren't ranked by sales or anything, as you can see, but still played a factor in the selections).
LAV, along with the first album, def. set a tomne, though, for female pop acts.

Nice Japanese debut.

OK- the prior week (W/E 3/4), the 17 albums/EPs scanned 4,146 units, up 4.25% from the prior week. Like a Virgin jumped 57% to 498 units, no doubt thanks in part to the Definitive promotion.

LAV is enjoying some nice increases as of late- more to come.
-
Yes, saw a bunch of LAV CDS at the Virgin Megastore in NYC.
lemi, hopefully I'll get this week's numbers.

There's the $9.72 discounting at Wal-Mart and such, the occasional Rollback, etc. COADF hasn't been part of anything like that yet. You could see a current album see a big noost because of a markdown at Target or sumthin', but the impact for such things seems to be bigger in the UK for some reason.
-
Hmmm, maybe with the next album, it can get a boost back to the top 50. Or, with next year, the Rock HOF possible induction, turning 50, the 25th anniversary of the debut album, etc.
I also think a well-placed promo in Wal-Mart could get it inside the top 50, like it had been a couple years back. It may have been marked down to $9.98 or whatever for a litle while, but not as long as it was back in the day. Wal-Mart still has Rollback items (even less than $9.98), but TIC hasn't been one of those, to my knowledge. The Glitter soundtrack (while not moving anywhere near as many units as TIC) was part of that Rollback program- for $7.99- and saw its sales rise significantly (as high as 600+ in a week).
-
TIC climbs 136-124 on the catalog chart, with 2,139 units (down 1%).
-
It's primarily a music DVD as opposed to a CD- CD only part of it so it could be another appearance on the albums chart (like with IGTTYAS).
-
Hmmm... maybe M has more than just the 1 album then in the Definitive 200.
Evita probably will surpass 2 million scanned in a year or so.
-
Isn't the only difference between the clean and explicit versions the inclusion of "Did You Do It"?
Erotica, BTW, has around 19K or so to go before it crosses 1.9 million- to keep things on topic here.
-
Do you have both "clean" and explicit versions of Erotica? Never got the explicit one.
I do have 2 Madonna, LAV and TB on CD, as I bought those dang remasters.
Anyhoo, I bet SoundScan doesn't even bother tracking sales of the single disc, which is why it's stuck at 6,500 or so units.
-
Are u SERIOUS? Even I stopped myself from getting that one! There's really no point to its existence, as every single track already was on the double album. If anything, it should have been released simultaneusly wiht the double album- but, surprisingly enough, WB was on the money with just releasing the double album in the USA. (Note how the double Dreamgirls album hasn't been nearly as succssful as the single album)
-
The debut album did pretty well in the USA- I'd say LAV is the album that shot her into the stratosphere, in many a way, though.
Wonder if GHV2 will drop below 200 units...

Last time I was at Wal-Mart, it didn't have a great selection (COADF probably was the most stocked, with 1 copy each of a couple others- maybe TIC had 2-3)- though you have to keep in mind that it has a lot less of a selection than record shops. And, as the numbers show, M sells most of her albums at chains.
