Exactly! It seems like there's no "formula" that guarantees a hit these days.....for ANY artist, much less Madonna. Furthermore, as fast as things move, a somewhat successful "formula" in October, may be a complete an utter failed approach by March. Song quality seems to be at the bottom of the list of things that = a hit these days....lots of boring, monotonous, tired, shit songs that fly up the charts. We know streaming is important for any artist trying to have a "hit" these days but outside of that, it seems like different things work for different artists. Beyonce releases her 15th surprise album and the world shuts down and it shifts 800k in two days, another BIG artist could do the same thing and the response would be *crickets*.

As you mention, the hottest artist releasing a song with a hot producer can push a song and it fails.....another hot artist can drop a song and go hibernate for 3 months and it'll fly up the charts. No guaranteed formula for a "hit". That must make it incredibly hard for a nearly 40 year music veteran in their 60's. I think fans need to cut the woman a break and realize, a hit, while not impossible, would be the exception, not the norm and we should have ZERO expectations when it comes to that. I think we need to chill out with bashing all these divas for their "flops" when...well...in a few months....we may be eating crow...lol....btw, that's ZERO reflection on the quality of her work. Commercially though, it's only going to get harder and harder for our girl. That's just the way it is at this point.

Totally agree. It's the wild west now and no amount of promo can guarantee a hit if the timing / alignment of the stars isn't right.

And yes It seems people delight in calling other divas's albums flops, but I believe this flop/cancel culture actually causes people to prematurely dismiss quality content.

I was talking about Mariah's new album with some millenials and heard the old refrain, "I didn't even know she had new music!" and that one has been hitting the promo trail HARD.

  2. Playing devil's advocate (not trying to school anyone), I think the issue is when a person who benefits from being at the "top" of society (aka white privilege) uses the culture or heritage of an oppressed minority (people of color) to profit.

With Elvis, he made rock accessible to mainstream audiences and got rich and famous, while the original singer of "Hound Dog" -a black woman- didn't enjoy the same advantage and success (one example).

With Madonna, some people might think she is stealing others' sub-culture, but I truly believe she has a hungry mind and appreciates so many different cultures, and has the talent, resources and access to put her own spin on it.

Some people believe now that the "oppressor" should stop using the "oppressed"; but to shut down the blending and evolving of the world's cultures is anti-human to me.

  3. I love BIM, GMAYL, and GGW. To me, they can stand along-side her classics. Whenever I feel disappointed about the lack of substance in videos like Celebration or GI2M,  I remind myself that they are similar to Lucky Star and Everybody from back in the day: minimalistic and relying on pure charisma from Madonna with nothing else.

You know the first video from Magic will knock our socks off. The fact that she's teasing us about using MDNA profits to fund her new videos is making me 😂.

as much as i'm excited about her new album, i am equally excited about revisiting her earlier stuff like hard candy , erotica , ameircan life , and bedtime stories. i think if madonna stops making new albums we would still have a lot of unappreciated gems in her catalog. and for those of us who have missed out on enjoying the above mentioned albums or others  for whatever reason, i promise you all are magical. so while you wait for the new, catch up on what u've missed out.

That catalog is just so vast... there's always something new to appreciate. Justice for Dance 2 Night!

I think everything has to come out at the same time. It's her best chance.

Whenever Madonna does anything like that people pay attention. Just look at her Super Bowl ratings. People still want to know.

If she comes out with the song, the video and the promo pictures, everything all at the same time for a single. Is the best way to go for her. Good luck Madonna!

This is a good and pure post. And I agree- Maximum Madge Impact: video, song, visuals together at once- will have everyone talking and listening. Good luck indeed!

  6. Wouldn't it also be internet-breaking if she had filmed several music videos that told an over-arching story, and released them all at once? Obviously she would be compared (unfavorably) to Beyonce by the mainstream media... but it would create a bigger splash and have all kinds of  "think pieces" written on blogs and such. Don't know if she's up for all that secretive work though.

Hook up with M83, Tiga, Fischerspooner...show her face EVERYWHERE...do some special promoted playlist on spotify, do a special gig for youtube then upload the audio to spotify and tidal. Come out on ALL the late night shows, do conan, do stephen colbert, do jimmy fallon. Have some shit used for Adult Swim bumpers. Let people be curious about the actual music. Whether fans like him or not come out on Watch What Happens Live and dont be uptight! Maybe even show up with rosie or debbie. Do the voice as a mentor, or american idol since Katy is on there. Do this for like a month or two with the first single. Let it gain streams be patient but persistent then the moment it doesnt rise a position on the charts release single number 2 with magazine covers and in print interviews everywhere with the album following shortly. With a single or two after. They probably wont chart but any little viral thing will keep the press alive and hopefully let it carry into the tour with lots of tour merchandise exclusives and promote that with viral ads, if she's so fond of fan art hold contests for promo images she'll share on her own IG page with a signed picture disc or something. It'll be hard work but that's how it is nowadays!!! As for looks, something kinda nerdy and edgy i think would be a breath of fresh air. Something more relatable and something she'd wear out on the streets.

Great all-encompassing promo strategy! Re: her look, I could see that working. We all know she thinks nerds are cool so maybe if she pulled back from traditionally "sexy" and went with a more severe / cerebral look it would be an interesting pivot, visually. All will be revealed!
