  1. Someone posted this on popjustice. I think it pretty much sums up how I feel about these tracks so far - though perhaps the only track i “love” is Medellin:

I love what she’s doing on this record so far. She’s taking sounds that have in one way or another been done lately, but she’s really adding her flavour and she is really showing everyone how it’s done in terms of subtle, precise, perfect production. She’s not jumping on trends, she’s enhancing them.

She said in the interview that she started off recording with the Portuguese musicians, and recording songs in Portuguese, and then it expanded to a worldwide album. There are acoustic elements in Crave though.

Agreed. The very beginning of the song, for example, and it's gorgeous.

  3. The bridge is gorgeous and she sounds less auto tuned than in I Rise and Medellin.

I think the GP will eat this one up. It is trend-chasing, but in a more adult kind of way, as far from BIM as it gets.

This could be a top-10 AC hit. If Mariah's With You is currently at #7, I don't see why Crave, which is catchier, couldn't do it. I think top 40 is a lost case, though.

As for Eurovision... I just don't see this song being performed live. 😞

  4. Crave is as mainstream as it gets (in a "we belong together" kinda way, but more subdued and nuanced), and the chorus is extremely catchy. This is her best shot at a radio hit.

Would I like M to be more avant-garde, take more chances, just be a little more experimental this time around? Yes.
Would I like her to have one more hit? Yes.

It seems we can't have both. It's not 1998 anymore, sadly. I just hope this song does what it's intended to do.

  5. Between filming and editing, she’ll need about a month till the video is out. But the single is out this week!

So maybe Mensch is on to sth when he says that maybe most of the video has already been shot.

Or maybe they’ll release the track, let it simmer for a while, do Eurovision, let it simmer some more, send it to radio and then video? But this sounds so RH! Her team is too on top of things this time around for that kind of mess.

Maybe the drag queen/dance song was originally meant to be the de facto pop single, but then the record company had a last-minute change of heart?

I remember when M performed Living For Love at the Grammys. It was seen by millions of people and no one cared. I didn't get it then and I don't get it now. 😞

Yeah, LFL left all my friends cold. I remember posting the Grammy video on Facebook and it got, what, three likes. And lots of them used to stan Madonna hard till MDNA.

But Medellin feels different. I posted the Billboard performance and had 50 likes and dozens of comments. A lot of casual Brazilian listeners know she has a new song out, but it got a VERY lukewarm response - and lots of fans truly hate it. So much so that when I Rise came out, all you could hear on social media was “thank god - this era has been saved”.

So I’m not sure how I feel about Medellin (which I have grown to LOVE) being pushed in Latin America. I can’t speak for the whole continent, but in Brazil it kind of backfired. It seems that most older fans are still yearning for “quality music” in the moulds of ROL/COADF and until they get it, “Madonna has lost her mojo”. Younger fans (and, yes, lots of gay men in their late 20s still like Madonna over here), on the other hand, seem more open to contemporary-sounding stuff like I Rise, but they’re more fickle too, and move on to the next Spotify playlist at the snap of a finger.

It doesnt help, of course, that Brazil is currently in love with you know who, however shallow her music may be.

Wonder how Crave will do. I could be wrong, but if M can pull off the impossible and release a song that can appeal to both millennials AND COADF/ROL orphans, she could have a moderate-sized hit in Brazil.

And, honestly, I don’t think the Anita duet will do the trick.

A few days ago I checked the link that @stevo208 posted a few pages back that shows you what stations play what, and no commercial or local stations like Capital or Heart were playing it really. So while I'm happy Radio 2 gave it a shot, it just wasn't enough.

Now that we have it confirmed by that Maverick guy that they were basically targeting the latin market, then we should consider the next one the REAL first single (and I hope Radio 2 don't look at the performance or Medellin and then not give the new one a chance!)

I was thinking the same thing. But does Radio 2 play uptempo songs too? From RH they only played Ghosttown, right? Or did they give LFL a few spins as well?

How do we make sure that people really understand this album by the time it comes out, but still have songs that can be hit singles in certain areas?”

In other words, they know how hard it is to get a global smash, so they’ll try a more local approach.

Makes sense in theory, but Latin America didn’t embrace Madellin (which I now love to death) as warmly as I’d thought. So even if they target Crave at Europe mostly, chances are it will cross over if it has mass appeal. So in the end maybe the whole thing is far more organic and unpredictable than we think?

    Exciting times

  9. Best like/dislike ratio on YT in this era. Lots of Medellin haters (Fans and GP alike, apparently) saying how much they love this song. Lots of comments along the lines of “first Madonna song I’m digging since the 90s/early 2000s”.

Personally, I still find the melody a tiny bit flat/uneventful (though the production is FLAWLESS), but isn’t that what’s playing on the radio these days? Wouldn’t this be M’s best shot at an A/C radio moderate hit before the album drops? If Dido’s Give You Up is still holding on, so can I Rise, theoretically?

That said, this is not a proper single, and Crave doesn’t sound like AC radio material, so I wonder what’s the masterplan.

Or has she given up on US radio altogether?

  10. This song is getting near universal praise on YouTube and Twitter. Lots and lots of people saying this is the Madonna that they love. Lots of Brazilians saying they’re in tears listening to this track (given what we’re going through politically).

I dont love the song yet, but I’m stunned by people’s reactions so far. Let’s wait until tomorrow, of course, but I’m quietly wondering if this, against all odds, might become more than just an album track.

  11. I Rise is getting much more love on Twitter than Medellin did when it came out.

Wonder how YouTube is gonna react.

Speaking of which, i wish she would release a lyrics video for these promo singles - especially if she wants to reclaim her throne in non-English speaking countries.

That might be my only quibble about this otherwise flawless era so far. 🙂

  12. I tried listening to inside out and I rise back to back. While I think inside out has a slightly stronger melody, it’s in the production department that I rise is like 1000x better. It’s crispier, more layered, the bass doesn’t distort and her vocals are crystal clear. At the end of the day, all things considered, I rise comes off as the stronger track, hands down.

Did Mensch hear rumor of the song back then being called Killers? Don't remember that name exept from fans guessing.

Bat-Fan, I don't think so. I think the whole guessing game began when we saw Killers on the whiteboard listed as the first track.
