  1. Come on, she played it really safe by hiring her former record's co-producer and trying to please her husband's taste.

COADF, Hard Candy and even MDNA are more creative than American Life.

says the man with the che avatar...

AL sounds different to me than MUSIC....two distinct albums...I think there is a ton more sophistication in the lyrics, vocals and music in AL than HC or MDNA

  2. Her only different and experimental album was ROL and let's keep in mind that American Life failed both commercially and artistically.

It's good actually for a true artist to fail every now and then because they try even more ,M released COADF after AL which is a brilliant album ,that's why it was a huge success on every level.

In my opinion for a singer after the age of 40 ,to be able for such a comeback ,is simply extraordinary

Anyway we post in the wrong thread!!!

I respectfully disagree...American Life was experimental-she didn't play it safe at all and for that I give her artistic credit.

  3. What died in her ? You really think having an album that did not sell as many copies ( no matter how great it was ) would affect her that much ? We are talking Madonna here, and she went through much worse of a backlash with the Erotica/Sex era. She has more depth than to sit around worrying about album sales. You are making her out to be like Gaga - saying about chasing commercial success etc. This is Madonna - she always gets back up and moves on with life.

Madonna cares about commercial success, why be part of the music industry if you dont give a shit? why bother? why would interscope sign her? ...does she brag? does she whine about it?

no but that doesn't mean she ignores the good and the bad when it comes to sales figures. if she didnt care she wouldn't have signed the live nation deal. she still loves music/making music part of the fun of that is being successful...watch the Matt Lauer interview from 03...she tells him the same thing.

after a low selling album she does act like it never happened...she is resilient and takes it for what it is but that doesn't mean she doesn't care or is somehow beyond disappointment. BTW Hard Candy was a direct 'chase' of the American audience.

    1. Does every album has to be a ROL or LAP? I don't think so. Heaven forbid M repeating herself and not evolving or expanding her musicality ala Mariah. Yes, I love those two albums but I can't imagine myself listening to a ROL-esque or LAP-esque album all the time. Thank heaven for HC, COADF, and LAV type of albums to balance it out.
    2. Does the fact the M worked again with Mirwais for AL reduce points from the album? It shouldn't be. Even though the folk-electronic sound was already on Music, the entire AL album was its own identity and it's a testament to the brilliance of the album. Heck, when I first heard the album in its entirety I was amazed with it. I haven't heard anything like that before, and the Music singles didn't even come to mind.
    3. Is AL album not the "real" Madonna? Wait, who said that the only real Madonna is the always-dancing, bitchy, vixen Madonna with a sprinkle of seriousness every now and then? Why is ROL not slated for not being the bitchy, vixen Madonna but AL is? I think ROL and AL are both similar in different ways, if that makes sense. Madonna can't always be singing about getting her booty down, or how music makes the people come together all the time. She has the right to be more introspective and reflective than usual.
    4. Should every Madonna song has poetry-like lyrics like ROL? So Madonna can't rap about soy lattes, metaphysics, and pilates? Wasn't she the singer who sang simplistic lyrics like "Holiday! Celebrate!", "Music makes the people come together, yeah!", "Ba da da da da ba da da, beautiful stranger"? Isn't there beauty in simplistic yet poignant lyrics such as "And I know that love will keep us together", or "What I want is to work for it. Feel the blood and sweat on my fingertips, that's what I want for me"?
    5. Did Madonna follow the bandwagon in HC? You may say she did. But should that detract from the good music in the album? And was the entire album full of fluff and "not-the-real" Madonna songs (e.g., Hard Candy, Heartbeat)? I don't think so. Miles Away, Incredible, and She's Not Me have personal lyrics.
    6. Was the HC cover terrible? All I saw when I walked in the record store was a standout pink vinyl with a MILF rubbing her age and womanhood to the haters. Did the pink candy background clash with the black boxing attire? Yes. Was it eye-catching? Definitely. Did it have a hidden message? I believe so.
    7. Was MDNA a terrible album? How could it be when it had Gang Bang, I'm Addicted, Love Spent, and Falling Free? Some may even like or love the overrated Beautiful Killer, I'm a Sinner, and Some Girls. Should all Madonna albums have a strong theme? What about LAV? True Blue? Or even the debut? I don't think there was any theme to those albums at all. It can be argued that they had singles and fillers. But yet True Blue is one of my most favorite albums. And I love the highly mocked Jimmy Jimmy and Shoo Be Doo.

I for one do not want a copy of any previous albums, but I do want the sophistication and seriousness and joyous moments that ROL or LAP had. I love all her albums but there are certain standouts that solidify her stamp on pop music. I'd rather have the entire album be great instead of just a handful of songs. Madonna is in a position to experiments and take risks, change up her sound on a whim...most fans love that about her, until she choses a path they aren't interested in seeing. I could be wrong but I don't really remember a lot of discussion and criticism of who Madonna was going to be working with next...until this new album. I think there was a slight blip here and there about HC but most fans were optimistic...lately it seems fans are questioning her motives and direction more and more...its interesting.

    ps

    true blue has a theme: Motown/ 1950's

  4. Debbie Mazar was on Howard stern ...in late 90's and she talked about how she recently at Madonna's for dinner...Madonna made chicken?...I think she even mentioned that Madonna cleaned up the kitchen too

  5. Agree

its more complicated than just one side's view, especially when they are in a camp. Responsibility for the chaos lies with Hamas ...they play dirty, purposely putting civilians in the line of fire to gain sympathy. I work for a woman who is from Israel and has immediate family living there now. My father is also ex military intelligence officer and I trust his perspective which is that Hamas is a terrorist group who's sole purpose is the destruction of Israel-collateral damage such as children and families are good for the cause. They play dirty. Israel has tried, there is no peace or satisfaction in the eyes of Palestinians.... unless Israel burns. They are taught that from birth.

  6. I'm going to agree American Life is a better album than MDNA. It just has a more personal touch to it and is more consistent in the quality of the songs themselves.

MDNA has some amazing songs but some total filler too. There is no doubt in my mind it was "rushed" as Orbit said. But I do think there are traces of greatness and I don't believe Madonna didn't care about it or put effort into it.

Hard Candy on the other hand is one of her most consistent albums and I'm certain she put everything into it. We've heard the early versions of some of the songs, it was not slapped together at all.

Some people just didn't like the choice of producers and so that turned them off before they even heard the album. But it was not half arsed or rushed. People that don't like the style of music love to believe that but evidence says otherwise.

I was excited at the possibilities and results of her work with Pharell , Timbaland, danja, and Justin... I think Hard Candy is misunderstood (bymyself and others)... It has it problems but overall it was a distinct era, which I respect and enjoy. its not her best showing IMO but its still special ...as all Madonna albums are.

  7. yes exactly!

I'm with you on that. American Life is really one of her best. I don't care what anyone says.

There's something really REALLY amazing about Like A Prayer/Immaculate Collection/Erotica and Ray of Light/Music/American Life that personify two totally separate Madonna's constantly evolving and shifting into something new.

AL has grown on me the most after all these years. I love the demos that didn't make the album.

  8. Is Hard Candy a great record?

Yes it is. Songs like Devil, Beat Goes On, She's Not Me, Incredible, Heartbeat are top notches.. if those songs were released by say Rihanna they would have been massive hits!

For us Madonna fans the question is: Is Hard Candy on the same level of Ray Of Light, Confessions or even Music?

    No it is not.

Although it does sound fresh and brilliantly produced we expected so much more from Madonna especially after the awesome Confessions..

Also, the image she appropriated for herself this time around is not that far off from her Confessions image.. she went all out to be sexy and provocative (same can be said for MDNA).. when she came back with a bang with Confessions the world was treated to a new Madonna's full-on reinvention! Everybody was talking about her figure and her pumping and grinding that boom box was some sort of early twerking. Everything was in place for her to be brilliant. Not so much with Hard Candy and MDNA.

What works for Madonna is exactly what's always been working for her since the start: an awesome new sound and the awesome new image that goes with it... she's started it all after all.

Maybe she wasn't that inspired or eager with Hard Candy.. maybe she wrongfully hoped team Timberlake/Timbaland would create a new sound for her... she ended up having the same kind of production instead. It's also worth noting how Timbaland did not come back with anything majorly good or inspiring after 4 Minutes.

MDNA was a rushed album. Anybody confirmed that.. it's a tour album.. i remember how everybody was gagging for this new album.. it was so long due that maybe Madonna and Interscope decided to put it out there just to please the fans and have new material for the tour... even the first single leak was a nasty affair. it just went to show how little hope they had on that track. In truth, her mind wasn't entirely there.. she had to edit a film.. just look at how much promotion she did for W.E.! Didn't she reportedly sacrifice studio time for her fashion label? i mean that should speak volumes...

    I agree.

  9. People dont get it. Its LOUD and pops off of the wall in a record store. It catches your eye. Its wrapped candy. I honestly think its fucking brilliant. It goes with the album. I swear if the avid fan decided the cover, we would get some boring ass black & white photo of her dressed as a boxer and it would get lost in the mix of boring covers

    record store? lol

and its her worst album cover since 'You Can Dance' ep
