Madonna is correct, she's been not pretty enough, not thin enough, not fat enough, not demure enough, not interesting enough, not ahead of the curve enough, not creative enough, not savvy enough, not happy enough, not sad enough and now, finally she is not young enough. When one day heaven forbid she's not alive enough, perhaps these people may regret that they spent their professional life tearing down an artist who only ever did what she wanted to do rather than fulfilling their own creativity in life and maybe making the world a more interesting place? Because god knows their sad rants about a woman ageing didn't do it.

Wow!! Amazing words!! Thank you and you are absolutely correct!!

They said it was a “photo shoot type video” like Give It To Me etc.

    .....which it isn’t.

Dont know why people worry so much when we no she’s already filmed more.

I agree. It’s so beautifully done. I love the message behind the concept of the video. Like, she’s addicted to something that she knows is not good for her. Like she’s trapped like a bird.

Somebody said the video was too photoshopped, which is bs. Not saying it wasn’t edited, but M looks great!

  3. I donno... I became M’s fan because of American Life. Like it totally took me into this futuristic, mystical, spiritual world with its sound, lyrics and Madonna’s voice. And I was hooked. Maybe that’s why it’s my most favorite album. It wasn’t until American Life that I actually went back into her career and listened to all the other albums. My second favorite is ROL.

I am not interested in that part of her really. The whole album felt (especially at first) like this joyless, angry experience with clumsy lyrics and basic melodies. However I like Easy Ride and Mother and Father. Nothing Fails is ok (a bit try hard), LP is a no. Its interesting how some performances really UPLIFTED the songs and the most striking example is NKM. The RIT performance elevated the song from one of my least favourite to one of my favourites. Of course, Madonna has no bad album, but we are talking in comparison to what followed. Maybe I really adored ROL and I wanted more of that? Could be. However she delivered with COADF, most of MDNA and RH more than enough.

Ok, are you talking about American Life the single or the album? Because you shouldn’t put the same words like “the whole album” and “angry” anywhere near each other!

Your take on AL is extremely limited and shallow. No offense. You missed the whole point!

I was still so young when I first heard it, and it didn’t take much for me to see the deeper spiritual undertones in that album. First song I heard was actually “I’m So Stupid”.  “...cuz I used to live in a fuzzy dream, and I wanted to be like all the pretty people... please don’t try to tempt me, it was just greed and it won’t protect me”. I wasn’t much into Kabbalah at that point at all, but the “it won’t protect me” part already made sense to me.

Then Love Profusion completely won me over. Nothing Fails is trying too hard? It’s one of the most laid back songs buddy! Except it drops into a climax with the choir so unexpectedly, it took my breath away when I first heard it. Again, most people associate it with Guy, but I believe M had something more spiritual in mind as well. And I just don’t understand how you can’t relate to some of the lyrics. I guess from Nobody Knows Me to Die Another Day, one cannot appreciate her message if they don’t approach them from a spiritual point of view. MDNA is one of her least albums in that sense. Maybe that’s why you liked it. I actually didn’t.

Yep.....just goes to show though, it's been the same old song and dance for her entire career. Even the "untouchable" ROL was NOT LOVED across the board from the get-go....which seems to be a very popular narrative now some 20 yrs later. Which is why these reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. I know many won't admit it but some simply won't like an album until they see it's "universally loved". Haven't read Sheffield's updated ROL review....but I suspect the tone is a little different than the original. 🙂

Exactly! You hit the nail on the head, with the  “universally loved” part.

I consider that fans are entitled not to like a certain album. The problem is when the critic is biased.

I don't like Hard Candy much and yet, I defended it 🙂

Well of course, but I’m just saying, I personally don’t get how any Madonna fan can be her fan and dislike AL. She was so authentic and genuine in that album/era. AL was just so well produced! It really sounds fresh even today. But ok, like I said, it’s their loss. Just like now, I’m obsessing with Future and Crave and Medellín, and even I Rise. But there are some fans posting throw up emojis on M’s social media.

Maybe instead of criticizing her new music, they should just realize they’re mentally limited to comprehend M’s musical directions and should take a different approach. Such as ALLOW Madonna express her own art and introduce them into her world without being torn apart with their senseless judgments!

  7. I’m sorry but if you don’t like American Life, you don’t get a MAJOR  part of who Madonna is, what she believes and what she represents. Not to mention that songs like Love Profusion, Nothing Fails, Intervention, Easy Ride are some of the BEST she’s ever done. Im Seriously over with fans who have the need to constantly remind everyone how much they didn’t like AL. Your fucking loss!

Piece of Sheffield's original ROL review from 1998:

“Sky Fits Heaven” takes its text from a Gap ad, which is at least an interesting place to seek the secrets of the universe, but “Shanti/Ashtangi,” where Madonna chants verse from the Yoga Taravali, sounds facile down here in the material world, especially since for all the faux Indian trappings it sounds like Devo’s version of “Working in the Coal Mine.” Madonna spends too much of the album slowing down the tempo in her quest for God, but God probably prefers “Into the Groove,” just like the rest of us.

Ray of Light isn’t quite the triumphant musical comeback her fans were praying novenas for. She hasn’t regained her genius for the crass, linear pop hook, and the Eighties Madonna of high-energy beats and wise-ass bravado is gone forever — that show is over, say goodbye. Instead, Ray of Light sums up the best we can expect from Madonna at this late date: overly arty, occasionally catchy, confused, secondhand, infuriating and great fun in spite of herself. She doesn’t seem to have a clear idea of what she wants to say about motherhood, other than that it’s the sort of intense experience that happens to a special person like Madonna. But that’s all it takes to get her emotions going, and passionate peaks like “Drowned World” and “Little Star” remind you that for all the years Madonna has spent chasing art, class and fashion, the reason we still care about her eccentricities is the emotion in her music; all her desperately chic decor can’t hide her rock & roll heart. We’ve all already forgotten the Sex book, the nose ring, the gold tooth. But we’ll always swoon for the lovesick Italian girl who sang “Crazy for You.” You can hear that voice on Ray of Light.

It's funny because it sounds like reading fans critiques on this board......always wishing for "the next...." (lately seems to be COADF) Does God prefer Hung Up like "the rest of us"??

Omg what a load of horse shit this review was. Unbelievable. I can’t even...

I would. I Don't Give A is a banger and it is absolutely superior to Future at least.

The point is that Madonna’s music is so diverse, and with each album she pushes us over the edge, to explore new genres with her, new musical directions, and I think that’s incredible! So many people like and dislike this or that song by Madonna, and that’s the beauty of it. But when people flat out shit on her work, hating on her songs, that’s just not acceptable. I had to stop talking to a certain “friend” because he kept posting nasty comments on M’s social media for collaborating with Maluma. He even used the throw up emoji.

But you know, Mirwais and Orbit are gods. Without them Madonna would be nothing. 🙄🙄🙄

And that’s also ironic. I remember how much people hated American Life. Now suddenly it’s the archetype of what Madonna’s music should be like. Another thing that really cracks me up is all these forums where they compare new music to Give it 2 Me or I Don’t Give A, and most fans vote for these over Crave and Future. Jesus people, how about you just relax, better yet, admit that you’re a bunch of slow bitches who won’t like anything new from M until it sits for a decade and ages. 😂

what's wrong with blindly and mindlessly loving someone, as long as that someone is worth it.

I hate when people say that when it comes to my love for Madonna. I may not always like everything she releases, but I’ll never go on social media bitching about it! That’s not expressing yourself. That’s shitting on another person’s art. And Madonna would say a big “FUCK YOU” to these “fans”. Expressing yourself is doing your own art, contributing to this world in some way, etc. Sick and tired of these nay sayers EVERY TIME Madonna doesn’t give them Like a Prayer or Ray of Light.

And by the way, BECAUSE I love Madonna, I have allowed her to introduce me to genres I’d never imagine considering before. I listen to her new music with an opened mind. And even if it’s not something I like at the moment, often times I find that I start to appreciate the genre. Which is incredible that Madonna does that!! She never stays in one type of musical direction. She always challenges us and pushes us out of our comfort zone, which makes me love her even more.

Medellín, Future, Crave, are all songs of genres I wouldn’t listen to before. But Madonna’s voice, her touch, her presence, message, had made me listen to these songs with an opened mind and now I can’t get enough! These are some of the best songs she has ever done!! This is the magic of Madonna! She’s not afraid to push herself AND her fans. She’s never gonna be a one trick pony. That’s what Mariah is for. Not Madonna!

When people ask me what kind of music I listen to? I can bravely say reggaeton, hip-hop, pop, dance, world, Latin, etc. ☺️♥️✨👌🏼 Because all of that is Madonna! One stop candy shop baby!

    I hope so too!

    We recently  got:

    -dark ggw opening.

-(Devil) horns in living for love.

-and dark opening at the met gala and esc of course.

    Im tired of Satonna

I’m afraid Madame X opening is going to be just as dark if not darker. Even Medellín video opened dark.

With Medellin, I thought at least she was turning into a cool older chick.  With crave, it appears she has CGI'd herself into looking 25 again.

She looks natural in the video. Are you trying to say she legit CGIed herself?? Have you never seen recent paparazzi photos where she looks freakishly stunning??

it might be partly her age. but it's also the song. i bet if it were more uptempo (like "soltera") it would be more popular with his fans. also, the video is quite long and the part they'd probably be most into is toward the end.

I disagree. The crap that young artists put out these days, like God is a woman, are you serious? Shit music but everyone is obsessed! It Ariana released Medellín everyone would be all over it.

Hair, makeup, clothes, styling in general is on point.

But this is definitely not that type of video that will make me watch it many times (unlike Medellin, for instance).

I really don't see why they decided to release this song as a single, it's just not IT, but whatever... it's time for me to get over it and hope for a GREAT 3rd single.

Been watching it over and over since yesterday! My favorite video by Madonna EVER!! Love the gentleness of it, the sexiness, vulnerability, symbolizim: fighting the craving for something that’s not good for you, freeing yourself from it aka doves = purity. To each their own.
