  1. Saw the following comment posted by 'Froya25' on the article about Radio 1 and ageism in the Sydney Morning Herald. It makes some great points.

Madonna is now operating in a world of non-existent attention spans, knee jerk online reactions, and a culture that takes everything literally and fails to recognize irony. In the past, she could be be outrageous or controversial and it was delivered in a way that people needed to grasp the context. Today, she's at the mercy of instant headlines and soundbites passed along on social media and gossip sites that result in a sort of "instant judgement". This is why so many celebrities in 2015 are tame and fear challenging the public's sensibilities. On the one hand, I admire Madonna for continuing to do what she wants to do and not succumbing to society's expectations. On the other hand, I fear that her current message is falling on deaf ears. Maybe in 20 years, when it's more acceptable for women to be so sexual in their 50's, we'll look back and recognize her as a trailblazer (as we do today for things she did in the 80's and 90's). My only concern is that "the lady doth protest too much" and it can burn people out. A better route might be to ride on her legendary status and be "above it all" and create a healthy distance with today's pop world, rather than throwing herself into the lions den of today's 20 year olds and taking part in social media, plastic surgery, trendy producers, etc. I'm more of a fan of her more subdued eras (Like a Prayer, Ray of Light, etc.), but I also know that Madonna will simply do what she wants, and will probably be fine (despite her detractors Rebel Heart is the number 1 worldwide selling album, and her tour is selling out).

  2. Moka, thanks for reminding me, I forgot about the bagpipe guy on RIT. I loved how they worked that with Into the Groove!!

I think the Indian theme has been done with visuals (I'm A Sinner on MDNA tour), but not really with the sound, with the exception maybe of Vogue in the Girlie Show. Frozen would work incredibly well with that sound also!

The Rasta sound would obviously work with UB, I'm not sure how she would work any older songs into it, but it certainly would be interesting!

The Harlem rapping trio could do a performance of Did You Do It as a mashup with S.E.X lol

  3. For the past several tours, Madonna has had guest musicians that have influenced the sound of portions of the tour.

For RIT, there was the bagpiper, whose sounds were blended into the Scottish-Tribal section, most notably Into the Groove.

For Confessions tour, there was Isaac from Israel, who lent a middle eastern vibe to the Bedouin section, especially the song Isaac.

For Sticky and Sweet, there were the Romani group Kolpakov Trio, which gave a very folksy feel to parts of the Gypsy section, especially with Ls Isla Bonita.

For MDNA, there were the Basque group Kalakan Trio, which influenced the sound of the Prophecy section, particulalrly Open Your Heart.

For the Rebel Heart tour, I'm hoping for folk musicians from India, and an Indian sounding, totally trippy version of Body Shop during this tour! I think Beautiful Stranger can also be adapted to this sound with great results.

What type of guest musicians do you think or hope Madonna brings along for the Rebel Heart tour?
  4. This past week I've been listening to the second half of the album a lot. This song is the one I've been repeating the most from tracks 10 to 23. I think the demo was more instantly catchy, but the album version is equally good. That said, on the tour the vocoder rebelll heeaarrt needs to be there. And this has to be the closing song on the tour!

  5. I will always worship The Girlie Show for that performance of 'Rain' alone. I think it's one of her best ever. I love the part where she starts singing The Temptations: "Just my imagination once again, running away with me, it was just my imagination . . .". That part makes me melt every time, I remember being surprised that she could pull off that soulful sound so well.

And then when she sang 'Everybody' it made me so hyped; I never cared much for that song before but her live performance gave me a new appreciation for it. So many amazing moments on the Girlie Show it's hard to take it all in

Everybody from Girlie Show is everything!! I love that beginning part where she sings "everybody is a star". I love that it's all real music using real instruments and real singing!!

  6. She's not Joan of Arc, that's why! Did you listen to the words of the song? She still gets nervous performing live, as anyone would/should. It was her first time performing this particularly song and unlike most pop-tarts these days, she actually was singing with live vocals. Also she's recovering from a cold so I'm sure she's extra worried about her voice. People have been so extra critical of her too lately; back in the DTM days she was a lot less scrutinized and criticized in the media compared to today.

But she's been doing this for 30+ years. And this wasn't even live tv, she did this song twice. She seemed less nervous at the Super Bowl, and that was live tv and a much bigger deal.

  7. JOA sounded great! But why is M so nervous. Both yesterday and today and both during / not during performances. I mean jeez, she's Madonna!!! Even the people from the audience who came on stage looked less nervous. Looking back at some of the acoustic performances from the past, she was so much more relaxed, for example Don't Tell Me during Letterman, and in that one she was even playing guitar which is something she was still (re)learning. It's very strange how nervous she is lately, it's kind of uncomfortable to watch.
