  1. I disagree that it has been about speaking her mind and being brave. She's had to walk back and explain a number of things and flat out delete posts. None of which really created dialogue at all, or were really meant to. She's not savvy to today's online environment. Which is to be expected when you're in your 50s and do nothing but work, create, perform, repeat for years on end. She's not like us who have much more intimately watched the ever evolving monster that is the Internet.

Becuz of this she's not very graceful on social media and is falling right into the haters hands. I don't mind Madonna having haters. I do mind when she's getting haters for reasons that are completely ridiculous. I hate hearing people call Madonna an idiot. She's not. But she hasn't done much to convince ppl otherwise when it comes to social media. Like I said, she sounds very teenager sometimes and I don't understand it.

But don't you think it was the same in other areas as well, for example when she made W/E and did interviews in which she was defending how the movie glossed over the nazi connections, etc. A lot of people didn't buy it. If you go back through her interviews, she's also also never given a consistent explanation of why she made the Sex book. It's not so much the medium as that her messages are sometimes messy and inconsistent. And on top of it, if you're a controversial person or do controversial things, you're going to get negative feedback, regardless of the platform you use. I think it's the same here, it's just here there is a more direct way for people to voice their opposing views. Which is fine, as long as it is done in the interest of furthering the conversation rather than out of hate. That's the part I think she is trying to influence.

Some of the things she's deleted I don't think she should have deleted. She should have explained, which I don't see as a problem, that's part of having a discussion.

  2. I agree Madonna approaches social media in some ways the same way as traditional media, doing and saying things to provoke and generate a response. Rihanna and the others don't do anything like this because they see their role as purely entertainers and therefore want to stay on message. Madonna is interested in political art and therefore speaks her mind without worrying about the consequences. I guess that can seem naive. I see it as she is aware of what will result but does it anyway perhaps to start a dialogue about the sometimes vitriolic culture around social media. She has alluded to this in a couple of interviews. I agree it hasn't always gone well, but I want her to keep trying and maybe even influence how it evolves. Oddly enough the things I am the most unsure about are relating to her kids, normal life, etc because I think it can diminish her mystique a bit, even though that's supposed to be the standard purpose, to make her relatable.

  3. This may sound crazy but since her son likes classic rock like Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd. What about exploring that? It would be really different for her and might get people's attention!.

I think she should go in a rock direction for #14

great idea GlindaTheGood. I've been entertaining the idea since i heard act of contrition in 1989.

I always love her rock renditions on tour so I'd obviously be here for it. I feel like she said she'd never do a rock album tho, but that doesn't mean she won't one day.

YES!!!! A Rockdonna album is looong overdue!!!

Btw, thx Glinda for bringing the article to our attention!

  4. the cross...Secret?

    Yes, that too!

The iheart performance was wonderful. Madonna is a fantastic singer. The bottom line is that some fans will simply never be happy when Madonna "just" sings a song. They need to have a spectacle, dancing, controversy, costumes etc. or they find it boring and pointless.

For those of us who enjoy when Madonna just comes out and sings a great song, this era has offered a host of treats.

I think the iheart performance is my favorite. The focus was completely on the music and I loved that arrangement of the song a lot. I hope that's how it's performed on tour! Plus she looked incredible and I loved the clothes and hair.

  5. Great article! One of my favorite parts from it:

"for me and other fans the world over, it always boils down to one clear commitment: with someone as extreme, maddening, polarising and groundbreaking as Madonna, you are either in or you’re out. And, after 31 years of watching the most important female artist of all time, I am resigned to the fact that I will never be anything other than in."

  6. Technically Madonna has no record label. So she's indie.

Definitely agree with this. She is certainly not an indie artist but has created music that no other mainstream artist ever would/could. Stuff like secret garden, erotica, drowned world, bedtime story, impressive insant, paradise, shanti, nobody's perfect. I cannot imagine any other mainstream artist making music that left field. Fact

Agree with both of you. That said, I think RH is her most classically pop album since LAP.

  7. The leak = ICONIC

    The Fall = ICONIC

    The Kiss = ICONIC

She made bad situations ICONIC situations she rose again back from. That's THE theme of this whole era = falling and getting up again. Losing and winning in the end.

The Rebel Heart era is an ode to Madonna's resiliance and determination.

In numerology the number 13 (13th album) represents death and new beginnings.

Living for love is about rising back after a heartbreak by getting your spirit back

Ghosstown is about surviving destruction and building things up again

Rebel Heart (song) is about going against conventions and surviving it

The Rebel Heart era is nothing less than an affirmation of everything Madonna is : non conventional, unapologetic, resiliant, passionate in what she believes in.

It may not be a big commercial success now but not only the album is good but the whole era will be regarded as being one of her most Iconic and inspirational. She took this public beating down and she survived. You can too. And that has ALWAYS been Madonna's message. Don't be afraid. You can do it too.

Failure is part of the process on the road to success. Don't look at the events as separate things and let them put you down but keep an eye on the big picture because the journey is long and it's a bumpy road but we all know that bumpy roads are the ones we learn more from and are the ones informing us the most.

    Celebrate this era !

And it's far far far from over.

She's reminding us in an age where everytning must be instant : instant success, instant gratification or labelled a failure, she's putting all this in perspective, consciously or inconsciously, of her own will or just like in every great moment in Madonna's career by being an example in dealing with what we consider failures.

"If you try and fail, get up again. Destiny will choose you in the end"

    Awesome comment!!!

  8. Oh yes. Then there was the mega awkward premiere of Sherlock Holmes (I think?) in September of '08 right as the tour started where Madonna showed up in black looking all S&S/ Hard Candy, and barely even let him hold her arm down the red carpet. The body language screamed "over"

Then a month later the divorce announcement came and this forum blew up. Will never forget 2008 and what a crazy year that was to be a Madonna fan. 2012 was equally crazy, and 2015 is looking to be the same. Each album cycle has been pretty much madness since 2008.

I think the premiere was for Rocknrolla. Sherlock Holmes I think came out after the divorce. I remember reading Sean Penn said about Sherlock Holmes 'Guy Ritchie is back!' That was weird, didn't understand what that comment was all about!

  9. Im convinced it was also look related. Some folks like to call that time off "the horse riding accident" but the truth is, it was due to her mega major facial surgery. There was no horse riding accident. What we got was a stunning face when she returned for coadf and really it felt like she herself felt attractive again.

    A

    Ummmm, what?!?!?!?!

  10. Great post! I agree. But I guess the difference between now and then is we have social media which blows the tiniest thing up into this major controversy or drama. Plus, there are all those trashy reality shows which puts the focus more on feuds and bitching between people. It's funny because I follow Madonna very closely, and I don't even remember the George Clooney thing

I tried to find the video but couldn't, maybe it was taken down. I agree about social media blowing everything way out of proportion. It's a bane as much as a boon. I hope she does a commentary about its effects during the tour, set to JOA.

  11. I agree with Arnian, I'm glad about the conversation being generated in the media by all these events this era.

This particular event reminded me of an MTV award show I saw on YouTube a while ago. It was from sometime in the 90s, and M was introducing or giving an award or something to George Clooney. When he came on stage she went to hug or kiss him and he blatantly moved away to avoid her. She looked a bit embarrassed and later in the show said something like 'I guess that's the closest I'll get to kissing George Clooney'. I don't know if that was a scandal at that time. I couldn't find anything else she said about it. I found a quote from him, he was asked about it somewhere, and he said something to the effect he had a cold, which seemed lame, just like Drake's lame statements. Anyway, the point I wanted to make is, sometimes these things happen, to all of us, and even to M previously (though I realize this time was even more so). Rather than dwell on them it might be better to just put them behind, both for M and for fans, instead of making them bigger than they are in the big picture. Let the conversation on the larger issues continue, but not dwell too much on this specific event.

  12. The only interesting things in all this and not just the kiss but everything Madonna did for the last few months are the reactions she triggers in people. It's more interesting to understand or try to understand what nerves she hits to make them so angry at her even when she just breathes (it instantly gets interpreted negatively). It all comes down to who and what Madonna is and has been since day one : a controversial figure so meanest things she does cross the lines of entertainment and become news, in a very grotesque way because she's just an artist but that's what controversial figures and artists do. I was thinking about "Les demoiselles d'Avignon", the Picasso painting, it caused an uproar and huge scandale when it was unveiled in 1907 : prostitutes and that technique ! People were scandalized and outraged...about a painting. A painting that made cubism a worldwide thing. Braque did not get that coverage for creating cubism and why ? Because he was not a controversial figure like Picasso was. We live in very very tame times artistically speaking. Everything is so meh, we forget a whole century of controversial figures in art : litterature, movies, music, painting, theater...the way pop music was marketed in the 50's and 60's was to make the artist likable to sell more records but if the songs stayed we forgot about the artists. We only remember game changer and you can't be a game changer if you're not controversial.

Madonna is strong. She said so herself on Howard Stern when he started to pity her "Don't worry about me, i'm strong". Of course it hurts but she knows Art history, she knows how all these painters, dancers, writers she likes and admires were vilified and destroyed. She knows the challenge she faces, she more any of us is aware of the backlash and bullshit she got over the years and still gets because she read and reads it, because she's questionned about it constantly, because she lived through it and still does. This is the artist she wants to be, it's not easy and it hurts but she's willing to pay the price because that's the challenge that presented itself to her. A performer would just try to avoid it to please as many people as possible, an artist just takes the bull by its horns and tries to tame it, it's no easy task, you stumble, you fall, you're getting kicked but she won't give up because she can't, because she has children she is an example to, she can't teach them to quit because the tide is too high or the challenge too big or that popularity is more important than convictions.

Look, I don't think anybody is saying you can't "feel bad" for M, that is certainly up to you and to a degree it's sort of endearing. Ive been told on this very board that I'm over sensitive and a "Madonna apologist" before so I understand how you feel to an extent. My whole point is why the complete and total disregard for the facts of the situation? Drake basically said it was an honor to be kissed by the Queen, he flat out said "don't misinterpret my reaction" but you don't even acknowledge that. It's the same thing the press is doing, they refuse to acknowledge the facts so they can perpetuate their own distorted perception as fact. THAT is what I find disturbing. As a certified Madonna loon myself, it's just hard for me to see her fans being so easily swayed by the flat out lies of the press when reality is she probably got dicked the fuck down after that show on Sunday night. ;)

Thank you both for being the voices of rationality and peace making. Both types of reactions are understandable so its really bizarre what's been going on in this thread, with reactions about reactions. It's not even about the actual events anymore, its morphed from opinions on what happened to something more meta.

I don't see the thing about drake. i don't like his face. he always looks weird about everything. i even think its weird how he has so many fans who are young. he has that kind of face peeps would easily make fun of. not to be mean or anything, but he doesn't look very.. "hunky". sorry if i sound disrespectful, but he just doesn't have that "look". maybe a nice body though. and the way M and him interacted before the kiss was very flirty. like they were very comfortable with each other. the kiss as well until he made that face.

if they dated a few times I'm not sure if they'll keep dating. which is kinda sad. unless they want to keep it private. but knowing M i think she'd "hint" to them being together after this mess, or maybe not eh.. could all be bullshit.

is andy a big name or a wendy williams type who just gossips?

He is just so not good looking imo, don't understand M's taste in men at all
