  1. I love this song. I don't know if it has been already discussed here but I think Funana has to do with life after dead (sorry if I am saying something obvious). I think of Funana as the heaven. The only small thing I don't like is this strong beat, it is a little to sharp, but I love everything else in this song.

  2. Together with Crazy this is the song that surprised me the most. I really loved it from the moment I first listened to it. I know some people find the lyrics tacky, but I think the lyrics are just unpretentious and somehow naive, as if a child would speak. The production is amazing and very creative and clever. I don't know if you guys know music theory but this song mixes a melody in 3/4 measure with the beats in 2/4. It is really a very nice effect

  3. I keep listening to MX (with small breaks now and then) and the more I listen to it, the more I realize how great it is and I wish so much it was longer! I understand many fans didn't connect with it, what is actually normal and indeed a good sign. A good album should not only please, but bother people too. People like to compare albums . I don't like to do it. An album should stand on its own and ifĀ  it isn't good, so that is what things are. There are albums of M and don't enjoy (I won't name them here though šŸ˜‰ ) and that is ok. I think the main problem right now with Ms community is that many fans are often too nostalgic and keep wishing a "hit". As much as I would love M to have a hit again this is not important in this stage of her career (on the other side I really think that her management could do better, specially regarding her legacy and back catalogue, both have been neglected for a long time). Having said all of that I am really happy Madonna recorded MX. I am sure time will show how great this album is.

Edit: can you immagine comparing Erotica with Like a Prayer? Both are masterpieces. I wish so much I were old enough to have experienced this time...so let`s enjoy MX because time goes by not so slowly šŸ˜‰

I gave it an 8/10 on Madonna Infinity forum, but 2 months down the line, itā€™s more a 5/10. I love that sheā€™s trying so many different things, I love experimental music, I ADORE that sheā€™s working with people from Cape Verde, one of my most favourite places in the world....but itā€™s justĀ wall to wall autotune, thereā€™s hardly any let up. Thereā€™s literally only one time I can hear in the album where she sounds raw and real, and thatā€™s a single line in Crazy. Iā€™m not saying that she should still have her Evita/Ray of Light vocals after so many years performing but does her voice really need so much treatment? Iā€™m not being a snob, I actually think it works really well on The Nutcracker segment of Dark Ballet. But the rest sounds like itā€™s run through the computer for the sake of it

Well, I said it before and MX belongs to my personal Top 5, for many reasons. But in fact the only thing that really bothers me are exactly the vocals (there has been much discussion on these theme here and there is a reason for it). I understand it was an asthetical choice, but I really think Ms raw and natural voice would have worked better and the effects should have been used with more parsimony.

I'm mixed about the 'music's not what it what it was' argument. Every generation says that about the next generations music.

At my last works Christmas party, the guy literally played modern RnB, hip hop etc like DJ snake and or songs like Mr Brightside and the dancefloor was packed. Hardly any classics.

It's people's memories that make songs classics even if they're shit.Ā

However, looking at the UK charts, I do think you see a massive increase in forgettable acts from the 2000s onwards with forgettable songs so it will be interesting what lives on.

As for Madame X, I find you normally have to wait a year to find out what people really think of an album. I seem to remember MDNA being showered with massive praise on release but now we look back and see it for the messy mix it is.

I've not listened to it in a while but I'll go back to it at some point, probably when the tour starts.

I understand your point because that is what we really hear all the time: "the music of my generation was better", what gives me mixed feelings as well. And for the example you gave I would at first have to listen how the music sounds, but I suppose that although the songs were current they belong to "established", now "standard" styles (R&B, Hip Hop) and those are very danceable styles. But as I wrote: I can't say much without having listened to the songs.Ā  Regarding my comment what I think is that nowadays there is less effort to write and produce songs that have an uniqueness. There have always been forgettable music but now the new goals (streaming) seems to have erased the interest in producing something original.Ā  And I agree with you: only time will tell šŸ™‚

I think it's telling that 70's pop and disco songs - and to an equal extent pop songs from the 80s - are the songs that get EVERYONE out on a dancefloor when they're played. Can't say the same thing about pop/dance songs from the 90's or 00's.Ā

That is somehow the biggest truth about pop music and the more time goes by the more obvious it gets. I don't want to start the discussion about "in the past music was better" vs. "we have to be open then there is still good music nowadays" but somehow there is something special about the music of 70s, 80s and some music of the 90s. I always ask myself how it will be in 20, 30 years. How many current songs will be remembered? I have teenage nephews who only listen to current pop music but I see that nothing remains. They listen to the music while it is on the charts and then it gets forgotten (with very few exceptions) because there are new "hits" everyday. It is obvious that internet and streaming totally changed the way we listen to music and how music iis done and for me it means music has turned intentionally "ephemeral". That is whyĀ  - even when I try to be positive and open towards current music - I believe there will be very few current songs that will be remembered in the future. Sorry if it doesn't fit to the discussion which was going but I totally agree with your comment

  7. I love Rebel Heart very much. This album contains wonderful songs, with strong melodies and catchy hooks. But it is unfortunately bad produced and suffered with the leaks. With MX Madonna managed to create an album which is varied but cohesive at the same time, well produced and new, specially when we take a look at the current musical scenario. That is for me the crutial difference between RH and MX and what makes me like MX more. Everytime I listen to this album I feel it is too short, because it is so involving. That is a special quality that not every album (even Madonna's) has

  8. I agree that the promo campaign felt too short, even if it should theoretically be the standards nowadays. But I understand that Madonna and her team focused on the big exposure strategy rather than on too many "small" events. Both approachings have pros and cons. In the case of MX I personally think that the "big exposure" strategy was a good one but it was heavily depending on their quality and reception and specially this last one is very hard to predict. That is the big problem of this kind of strategy, then there is too much pressure. In MXs case we had both extremes: BMA and Pride were fantastic while Eurovision was a catastrophe (at least from the perspective here in Europe Eurovision had a negative impact on the campaign. Sorry to bring this discussion again). I just want to say that although the campaign was too short it was indeed a very good strategy, even if there were some flaws. IMO they planned it correctly but no one could never know how it would turn out. In retrospect I do feel it could have been a little more, especially because the singles deserved more attention. Last but not least: I am not sure if I agree with the idea that a tour is also a big promo for an album. At least not nowadays. But I have to make some more research before claiming that.

I personally connect with MX much more than Rebel Heart or MDNA. But IĀ have noticed the forum was pretty quiet since its release, so I wonder how many long time members feel about it.

I also connected with MX more than with Rebel Heart (which is by the way an album I love very much despite the bad production) and definetly infinitely more than MDNA (which is for me the least inspired album of Madonna and my least favorite). The issue with MX is that everything happened too fast after the announcement. On the one hand it was extremely exciting, but on the other hand the whole era "ended" too fast.Ā  I know that times are different and Madonna has other priorities now but the album launch campaign felt too rushed and disconnected. I understand she didn't want to focus on singles but I missed more coherence (between singles and performances) and think it would have been a good thing. This was for me the only negative aspect of this era.Ā  I also felt a little bit disappointed some weeks after the release because the first teaser gave us the impression that she would explore and play more with the characters she presented on the teaser, but this feeling has more to do with my own expectations, so it isn't that important. In the end I must say that despite some wishful thiniking and some small flaws (we fans will always wish more and more perfection) this album and era were really great and MX definitely belongs among the best albums Madonna has ever produced.Ā  For me it is on my top 5.

My top 5 this very moment is: Erotica (it will always be my nr 1šŸ˜), Bedtime Stories, Madonna, Madame X and Music. This are the ones I listen without skeeping any song (ok, maybe one or two) and the ones I feel a strongest connection, for many reasons (let's see if it remains so. At least regarding Erotica I know it won't change). I obviously love Ray of Light, Confessions, American Life, Like a Prayer, True Blue, Hardy Candy and th eother ones, but I only listen to them when I am in the right moodĀ
