Today is the last day that I'm using words
They've gone out, lost their meaning
    Don't function anymore

    Let's, let's, let's get unconscious honey
    Let's get unconscious honey

Today is the last day that I'm using words
They've gone out, lost their meaning
    Don't function anymore

    Traveling, leaving logic and reason
Traveling, to the arms of unconsciousness
    Traveling, leaving logic and reason
Traveling, to the arms of unconsciousness

    [Chorus:]

    Let's get unconscious honey
    Let's get unconscious
    Let's get unconscious honey
    Let's get unconscious

    Words are useless, especically sentences
    They don't stand for anything
How could they explain how I feel

    Traveling, traveling, I'm traveling
Traveling, traveling, leaving logic and reason
    Traveling, traveling, I'm gonna relax
Traveling, traveling, in the arms of unconsciousness

    [chorus]

And inside we're all still wet
    Longing and yearning
How can I explain how I feel?

    [chorus]

    Traveling, traveling [repeat twice]
Traveling, traveling, in the arms of unconsciousness

And all that you've ever learned
    Try to forget
    I'll never explain again

I always put my Madonna songs on shuffle to help me pick the song of the week to post and how cool is it that the first song to come on was the title track from the album celebrating it's 20th anniversary! This has to be one her most experimental songs at the time and certainly an extremely bold choice to release as a single. I don't think she was looking for a #1 on the pop charts with this song but wanted to make an artistic statement and show her love and appreciation for other types of music. You can definitely hear the Bjork influence on this track but she also manages to infuse it with her own style and musical sensibilities. The music is absolutely trance-like and other-worldly which perfectly conveys the message of abandoning logic and reason that the lyrics speak to. On a personal level, this was not one of my favorite songs from the album but I have grown to appreciate it more and more over the years and I have always respected her for choosing this as a single. If for nothing else, her decision to release it allowed us to experience the masterpiece that is the song's video. I was one of the lucky fans who won tickets to see the video premiere at the Pajama Party at Webster Hall in NYC and this song will always be associated with the memory of that night for me.

  2. Mooncrown and Peter, always love reading both your song reviews and descriptions and they make me want to listen to the songs again to capture what you are saying. Mooncrown, I also often feel Madonna has a Karen Carpenter type quality to her voice. I have noticed it before on other songs and yes it is on display on the verses here.

Thanks for your positive comments Jan! I'm glad you hear the Karen Carpenter thing too - I thought I was crazy

  3. The only thing I'll say in response to what you questioned -- about the "oh, oh, oh" breakdown not featuring M's vocals at all, and only Justin's ... Hmm. I'd never considered that, actually -- I do love Madonna's humming, so I guess I couldn't say the track is better without that added element. But I guess I'd always imagined those vocals in the breakdown as the chorus of the "angels that surround [her] heart" (your favorite lyric -- which I love, as well ... I agree, lyrically, it's a really strong track). I don't know -- maybe that's silly or odd, but that's how I always 'heard' that part of the song, so it never seemed odd to me that M wasn't singing there.

I actually quite like your interpretation peter - that part does have a kind of "heavenly" or "other-worldly" feel to it. Don't get me wrong, I like this part a lot and Justin sounds great but I always thought it could have been a "moment" for her as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts-it makes me see the song in a different light.

As quiet as it is tonight
Youd almost think you were safe
Your eyes are full of surprises
    They cannot predict my fate

    Waiting underneath the stars
    Theres something you should know
The angels, they surround my heart
Telling me to let you go

    I barely couldnt
    I barely couldnt recognize
But I played right into it
So who am I to criticize?
    Somehow Ill get through it
    And you wont even realize
    Falling through your own disguise

    Its like over and over
Youre pushing me right down to the floor
    I should just walk away
    But over and over
I keep on coming back for more
    I play into your fantasy
    Now that its over
You can lie to me right through your smile
    I see behind your eyes
    Now that Im sober
    No more intoxicating my mind

Even the Devil wouldnt recognize you
    I do
Even the Devil wouldnt recognize you
    I do
Even the Devil wouldnt recognize you
    I do
Even the Devil wouldnt recognize you
    I do, I do, I do

You almost fooled yourself this time
That all the saints be praised
You hide your sadness behind your smile
And you keep your lost heartbreaks
The steps that edge along the ledge
Its much higher than it seems
But Ive been on that ledge before
You cant hide yourself from me

    I barely couldnt
    I barely couldnt recognize
But I played right into it
So who am I to criticize?
    Somehow Ill get through it
    And you wont even realize
    Falling through your own disguise

    Its like over and over
Youre pushing me right down to the floor
    I should just walk away
    But over and over
I keep on coming back for more
    I play into your fantasy
    Now that its over
You can lie to me right through your smile
    I see behind your eyes
    Now that Im sober
    No more intoxicating my mind

The song that many fans felt should have been a single from the Hard Candy album. Maybe her camp felt that it was too close in sound to Justin's own Cry Me a River but this song has something that song does not - the Madonna factor. Her voice is really well used here and it even bears a slight resemblance to Karen Carpenter's during the verses (does anyone else hear that?) I actually prefer her more organic vocals on the verses rather than the more processed vocals of the chorus. The song also has strong lyrics with powerful imagery - some great writing here. Would love to hear the original written for the Helllo Suckers musical to see how the song evolved into what we hear on the album. The only part I question is why they didn't include Madonna's voice during the "Oh Oh Oh" breakdown?? It would have been great to hear her harmonizing with Justin or maybe throw in some humming - a missed opportunity to really showcase her voice if you ask me. I don't think she's ever said who the song is about, but one can assume it was written about Guy as their marriage was about to come sadly to an end at the time.

    "Lucky Star"

You must be my Lucky Star
'Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
    And I need your light
    And baby you know

    [Chorus:]

Starlight, starbright first star I see tonight
Starlight, [starbright] make everything all right
Starlight, starbright first star I see tonight
    Starlight, [starbright] yeah

You must be my Lucky Star
'Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I'm lost you'll be my guide
I just turn around and you're by my side

    [chorus]

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right

You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far
The opening track on the self-titled album that started it all way back when. Who else could take a famous children's nursery rhyme and turn it into a brazen sexual come-on that delivers pop hooks in spades? This was my absolute favorite of the singles at the time (though Burning Up has edged it out for me a bit over the years). As soon as you hear that twinkling synth and the beat kicks in, you know you are in for a treat. It's hard to think of this song without it's equally fantastic video. It's just her performing with two other dancers with a white background and she couldn't possibly be any more mesmerizing. Her star quality is so evident here and cannot be denied. I can't be the only one who has to force themselves not to do the Lucky Star kick when hearing the song in public, right? I've loved all the live performances of the song, but I don't think they've ever quite measured up to the original. It's certainly not a song with deep philosophical meaning, but it doesn't pretend to be or want to be -it's just pure unabashed fun and I love it for that.

  6. While stuck in a frustrating and annoying traffic jam this afternoon for over 2 hours, I luckily had my trusted IPod and always have it on shuffle songs. Naturally, I have so many Madonna songs on it, that I always hear plenty of her music mixed in with a lot of other songs from a huge variety of various artists. What struck me though, is how incredible her voice sounded compared to others that people often consider better singers.

With the songs I heard ranging from Borderline from her first album to Masterpiece and I'm Addicted from MDNA, all I can say is Madonna is probably the most under-rated singer in popular culture. Sure, everyone loves her music and knows she is an incredible entertainer but her ability as a singer is wonderful. No-one can sing pure pop perfection as well as Madonna does with Into the Groove. Her vocals on Live to tell are stunning as I find all of her ballads are. She conveys every emotion for every type of song and has done so since the 1980's through to today. The variety in her style of music and how she sings it is second to none. Her voice itself is lovely, clear and so expressive. Do others think that we do not rate her ability as a singer enough due to her being such a superstar on so many levels ? I am interested in other fan's opinions on this.

I so agree Janelle! While she does receive praise for her songs , she rarely gets the credit she deserves for her wonderful voice (her songwriting ability is also criminally underrated). As you stated , she conveys such emotion and is so genuine and believable - something other technically better singers are sorely lacking . Others may have 8 octave ranges or whatever and that is certainly an impressive gift, but if they don't make me feel anything, I'm not going to keep listening. Madonna always makes me feel what she sings and has moved me emotionally many times with her voice and continues to do so. Sure, she may have had some less than stellar live performances over the years but even the best singers can have an off day and there are so many brilliant live performances she has done (like the ones mentioned in this thread) that prove she is a fantastic and gifted vocalist.

  7. I love this song as well, especially the live version on the Virgin Tour.

Clearly Madonna was happy with the live version as well, considering she mentioned the performance of the song in her late 1985 interview with Molly Meldrum (to promote the VHS/laserdisc release of the Madonna Live: The Virgin Tour) as being the high-point in the middle of the show. Funny how she pointedly ignored all the fan requests for her to sing it live during the Sticky & Sweet Tour. I forget which city it was but I know there was a video where she asked a fan for a request and he said "Gambler" and she said something about not remembering the words and asked for a different request. You'd think she'd have a little more love for the song considering she wrote it on her own, but I guess that isn't something that elevates a song in her mind.

Another interesting thing is that there are actually two different versions of the original video for Gambler...one uses some different clips from the film and of Madonna's performance of the song from the film shoot. Both include the badly edited audio towards the end. Not sure what the reason was for releasing the two different cuts of the video, but one version includes a scene where the lead character pushes the female lead down on the a bed somewhat violently whereas the other uses some additional performance scenes and alternate clips from the film...so my guess would be that one of the video channels took issue with the violent scene and asked Geffen to cut a different version.

Huh- I never realized there were 2 versions of the video - good catch !

Yeah you think she could have just sang a few lines to appease the fans or at least had them sing it with her if she truly couldn't remember the words.

I can't stop thinking of you
The things we used to do
    The secrets we once shared
    I'll always find them there
    In my memories

But this heartache isn't going anywhere
In the public eye I act like I don't care
When there's no one watching me
    I'm crying

I will always have you, inside of me
    Even though you're gone
    Love still carries on
    Love, inside of me

I keep a picture of you
Next to my bed at night
And when I wake up scared
I know I'll find you there
    Watching over me

When my world seems to crumble all around
And foolish people try to bring me down
I just think of your smiling face
    And I'm flying

I will always have you, inside of me
    Even though you're gone
    Love still carries on
    Love, inside of me

You'll always be inside of my heart
    Inside of me

When my world seems to crumble all around
And foolish people try to bring me down
I just think of your smiling face
    And I'm flying

I will always have you, inside of me
    Even though you're gone
    Love still carries on
    Love, inside of me

I will always have you, inside of me
    Even though you're gone
    Love still carries on
    Love still carries on

    I will always feel you
You'll always be inside of my heart
I'll always have you inside of me
    I will always have you

On the surface this song might appear to be about a lost love but a closer look at the lyrics shows they are actually about the loss of her mother which she also revealed during the MTV "No Bull" interview. This song has got a warmth and intimacy in her delivery that brings out its true meaning. Although it deals with very sad subject matter, it's actually quite hopeful as it reassures us that those who leave us are never truly gone - they live on in other ways for us and continue to bring comfort and a feeling of security. The song also uses a sample from Aaliyah's "Back and Forth" and after her unfortunate passing at such a young age, it adds even another layer to the song's poignancy.

    "Gambler"

    Gambler, gambler

    [Chorus:]

I'm a gambler, and I will take you by surprise
Gambler, I'll aim this straight between your eyes
Gambler, yeah I know all the words to say
'Cause I'm a gambler, I only play the game my way, yeah

Don't want to say this but I think that I should
I'm better off forgotten if you think that I'd be good
One day you see me the next day I'm gone
Don't fight me baby I don't want to hold on
    I'm a gambler, a gambler

You're not happy with the way I act
You better turn around boy, don't look back
You're getting angry, you know I can see
You're just jealous 'cause you can't be me

    [chorus]

    [intermediate:]

    You can't stop me now
'Cause I'm right and I'm making advances
    Let me show you how
Tonight, I'll be taking my chances
On you, on you, on you, on you, that's right baby

    I'm a gambler, gambler
You understand what I'm talking about?

    [chorus]
    [intermediate]

    I'm a gambler, a gambler
    Gambler, 'cause I'm a gambler

    You can't stop me now
I'm on the road baby I know how
    You can't stop me now
    Oh no

You can't stop me now [repeat 3 times]

    'Cause I'm a gambler, yeah I'm a gambler
    That's right baby

The other, less successful but spunky song from The Visionquest soundtrack. This song for me hearkens back to the sound of her pre-fame days with a little 80's sheen on it. I mean, who doesn't love a good echo effect, right? I actually prefer this song to Crazy For You - it just seems more like her. This song has an infectious beat and a killer bassline and I love her feisty yet playful vocal delivery. I think this style really suits her voice and it showed that she could pull off a more rock-type song while still maintaining her dance pop sensibilities. She is credited as the sole writer on this track which is not something we would see again in her later work. The one (and probably only) live version of this track was performed during the Virgin Tour and for me is one of the

highlights of that show - simple but totally effective and captivating performance with just the right amount of diva attitude - just wish it could have gone on longer.

Favorite lyric: I'm better off forgotten if you think that I'd be good

    Favorite musical part: The bassline

Favorite vocal part: That's right baby

One word that sums up this song: Spunky
