Mooncrown, do we PM our lists to you ?
You can PM me if you want to or just post the list in the thread. I'm good either way. Thanks Jan!

What are your 50 most treasured Madonna songs at the moment and how would you rank them? How does your list compare to your fellow members' lists? Which of your favorites will make the list and which will miss the cut? What song will be voted the ultimate # 1 ? What exactly is going on with Madonna's new album and when will it be released? Some but not all of these questions will soon be answered once the votes are cast and I calculate the results and count them down for your viewing pleasure!
So here's how it will work...Everyone who would like to participate will post their top 50 songs in order and I will assign points to each song depending on where it is ranked on each list. There will be 2 points awarded to a #50 ranked song, 4 points for a #49 song and so on up to a 100 points awarded to each song ranked as #1. For example, if someone ranks Holiday as #50 and another person ranks it #1, it would have a total of 102 points. So the order you rank the songs is just as important as the songs you choose. Any Madonna song is eligible including album tracks, demos , and b-sides. While I encourage you to list a certain version of a song that you prefer, I will count all votes toward the song itself instead of separating them into different buckets by version . When everyone has had a chance to vote, I will calculate the results and count them down 10 at a time along with some interesting statistics about the votes Sound good?
I know this is a huge undertaking and may require a bit of soul searching to come up with your definitive list so I plan to leave the voting open for a while to give all who want to vote a chance to do so. If it is possible also, would one of the admins be so kind as to pin the thread so it stays visible on the 1st page?
I know it may not be easy and your list may change next month or even tomorrow, but just choose the 50 songs that are speaking to you the most at the moment and let everyone know what they are. Don't be afraid to be honest-even if it is not the popular opinion. This is a judgement-free topic (at least I hope it will be)
So.. What are you gonna do? Get voting of course!! Thanks in advance for indulging me and have fun with this -
It's the grandma hair, isn't it?
Love that tour though.

Yes I have to go with Who's That Girl as well. I don't hate it and I have very fond memories of it (it poured almost the whole show at Giants stadium but we didn't care!) When I watch all the tours again, it doesn't quite jump out as much as the other ones for me.

Some of you have mentioned this awesome live version of the song so I thought I'd post it to remind us how good it was:

"American Life"
Do I have to change my name?
Will it get me far?
Should I lose some weight?
Am I gonna be a star?
I tried to be a boy,
I tried to be a girl
I tried to be a mess,
I tried to be the best
I guess I did it wrong,
That's why I wrote this song
This type of modern life - Is it for me?
This type of modern life - Is it for free?
So, I went into a bar looking for sympathy
A little company - I tried to find a friend
It's more easily said it's always been the same
This type of modern life -Is not for me?
This type of modern life -Is not for free?
American life
I live the american dream
You are the best thing I've seen,
You are not just a dream
I tried to stay ahead,
I tried to stay on top
I tried to play the part,
But somehow I forgot
Just what I did it for
And why I wanted more
This type of modern life - Is it for me?
This type of modern life - Is it for free?
Do I have to change my name?
Will it get me far?
Should I lose some weight?
Am I gonna be a star?
American life
I live the american dream
You are the best thing I've seen,
You are not just a dream
I tried to be a boy,
I tried to be a girl
I tried to be a mess,
I tried to be the best
I tried to find a friend,
I tried to stay ahead
I tried to stay on top...
Fuck it...
Do I have to change my name?
Will it get me far?
Should I lose some weight?
Am I gonna be a star?
I'm drinking a Soy latte
I get a double shot
It goes right through my body
And you know
I'm satisfied,
I drive my mini cooper
And I'm feeling super-dooper
Yo they tell I'm a trooper
And you know I'm satisfied
I do yoga and pilates
And the room is full of hotties
So I'm checking out the bodies
And you know I'm satisfied
I'm digging on the isotopes
This metaphysic's shit is dope
And if all this can give me hope
You know I'm satisfied
I got a lawyer and a manager
An agent and a chef
Three nannies, an assistant
And a driver and a jet
A trainer and a butler
And a bodyguard or five
A gardener and a stylist
Do you think I'm satisfied?
I'd like to express my extreme point of view
I'm not Christian and I'm not a Jew
I'm just living out the American dream
And I just realized that nothing Is what it seems
Do I have to change my name
Am I gonna be a star
Do I have to change my name
Am I gonna be a star?
Do I have to change my nameThis is one of those songs that split fans - some love it, some hate it -but either way, it got attention. I think the part that easily caused the most issues is her rap which is not bad but certainly wouldn't win her any rap battles. The song manages to be both serious and tongue in cheek at the same time. She's making a commentary on how obsessed America is with image and materialism but she also jokes about herself as taking part in the obsession as well. While I don't think it's one of her better singles, I do think it's different and had something to say. I quite like the juxtaposition of the more electronic choppy verses with the acoustic, smoother chorus. My favorite part though is the "Do I have to change my name" part which is delivered perfectly and simply but powerfully sums up the message of the song. It's almost impossible to think of this song without thinking of the original pulled video which is so well done and really drives the message of the song home with it's graphic war imagery mixed together with a fashion runway show showing how we are sometimes immune to real violence almost as if it's just another entertainment outlet. I understood why she made the decision to pull it but it's quite a shame as I think it would have helped promote the song better.
Favorite lyric: Do I have to change my name? Will it get me far? Should I lose some weight?
Am I gonna be a star?
Favorite Vocal Part : Same as the above lyric
Favorite Musical part : The acoustic guitar
One word that Sums Up This Song: Disillusion
What do you think of this song?

A double album would make perfect sense as she seems to have two very different records going on. Or two separate albums would work as well like Prince just did. The more new music the better I say!
-
i think this is with everybody...just give your top50 of the moment....
Exactly Vande!
-
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I will try doing the Top 50 and see how it goes. Hopefully we can get a lot of participation.
I'll try to get this going in the next week or two and I'll leave it up for awhile to give people time to think and vote.

So excited! Looks from the cover that we are hopefully getting some new images

Just made my pledge for the book. He's more than halfway to the goal!!
-
This track should be the closing for ROL instead of Mer Girl.
Agreed!!

^ I know. As if she's made it this far not being hands-on and totally engaged in her work.
Right?! It seems like Diplo had the same impression. Where is this coming from?? Everyone who has actually worked with her praises her work ethic and her musical knowledge.
-
I love reading these glimpses of how she works in the studio. Her producers always have this impression that she's going to be a total diva and I think they are surprised how hands on she is and how much she brings to the table in the creation of the music.
COADF is a special album - I felt it the first time I listened to it.
Thanks for posting

"Has To Be"
Breathe in, breathe out
I say a little prayer
How the gods above
Could be so unfair
[Chorus:]
I know there's someone out there
Waiting for me
There must be someone out there
There just has to be
Go on, go on
Don't sit there like a fool
You've graduated from
A different kind of school
[chorus, repeat]
I should be glad that I'm alive
It could have been much worse
I might have never loved at all
And never known what I am worth
How the gods above
Could be so unfair
[chorus, repeat]I know she wanted to keep the ROL album at 13 tracks, but this song so deserved to be on the album proper and not just a Japanese bonus track or B-side as it fits so well into the themes and feel of the album. This song is so atmospheric - I feel like it's a message she sent out to the universe and it's just floating out there waiting for the right person to hear and answer it. It manages to be both melancholy and hopeful at the same time, both lyrically and in her delivery. Her voice is showcased perfectly here and I particularly love the layered vocals in the chorus and the glorious low notes she hits on the verses(she has a fantastic lower register which gives me chills every time). A rare gem in her catalog that should be heard.Favorite lyric: Breathe in, breathe out I say a little prayerHow the gods above could be so unfairFavorite musical part : The outro
Favorite vocal part: The low notes on the verses
One word that sums up this song: Hope

Ok, as long as we can nominate 50 songs then I'm happy. :-)

I'd like to see a Top 50 singles only countdown, where everyone has to provide their top 50 singles. It's more manageable and reflective of the forums tastes. If album tracks are included then the pot is too big and it only takes a few people with dodgy tastes to send some random album track up the list.
I understand your reservations about opening this up to all songs but I think it can work without going too off track from reflecting the forums' tastes . Also, it looks like the one that Whoop conducted last year was focused on the singles only so I wouldn't want this to be too redundant.
-
Wow! Nicely done! I especially like the personal stories and reflections for each song - very nice touch! You could do it, mooncrown, but you're gonna have VERY big shoes to fill. This thread is ICONIC.
I'm a little wary now if I try to follow that up:o
-
So not just singles, but all her songs?
Yes all songs are eligible - album tracks, b-sides, unreleased, demos, etc.

I was wondering if there would be any interest in doing an Madonna Nation Madonna Top 50? It's something I organized for the past few years when I was on the Absolute Madonna forum and it was great fun to see everyone's lists and how they might change from year to year or when new music was released. It's pretty basic-everyone who wants to participate would post their top 50 M songs in order and then I would take the results and assign a point value to each vote depending on where the song ranked on each list. I would leave the voting open for a good couple of months to give everyone a chance to come up with their list and then I would count them down 10 each day complete with fan artwork and stats about the voting. I think it would be really interesting to do here as there is a lot of activity and participation. However, being relatively new , I'm not sure if you already have something like this in place and I don't want to steal anyone's thunder so please let me know if there is a similar tradition already.
What do you think of this idea?
Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Love all of her Kurt Loder interviews!! I so miss them!! Remember when MTV actually used to have music on it and specials on musicians - those were good times..sigh...
Still love that crack at the Bodyguard soundtrack

Wow - I loved the Encyclopedia Madonnica!! Such great info and a lot of humor too. In fact, I may have to go dig it out of my attic this weekend while I look for my old Icon mags as well. Would absolutely love an updated version - so much more has happened since the first edition! I am totally backing this project

I love Alicia and psyched that she will be featured on the album - she is such a positive person and fits in perfectly with the art for freedom theme.
There is so much news and rumors surrounding this album and so many rumored songs out there. Not sure what to believe at this point but I will say that the snippets and information that M herself has been leaking have me very excited for this release. I would love it to be this year but I also am willing to wait if it means she is taking her time to make sure it is right.
