Confession: I actually don't care much for it either. It's my least favorite song on the album. I do like the "Cool I am" part though.

I so agree - I love songs where she does her own background vocals as well. The background vocals on this song are particularly stunning and absolutely beautiful.

Won't you let it be (won't you let it be)The song that initially had many fans scratching their heads and wondering if maybe there was a typo in the track listing. Well bad grammar be damned - this is a great album track. Though there's a bit of darkness to it, this song is also quite euphoric and uplifting at the same time. Lyrically it seems to be another song where she is singing about the trappings of fame and how fleeting and fickle it can be. The music and her voice combine perfectly to create a sense of abandonment and freedom which may be what the title suggests - just let things happen as they will and make the most of the situations you are in while you have the time to do so. My favorite part has got to be when the music drops out when she sings "Just watch me burn" and then it kicks back in again - gets me every time. 1 to 25 has always been pretty easy for me. It's the 26 to 50 that is so difficult.
I agree Larkspur - the top songs are easier than the others for some reason for me too. I think there are just so many songs I could include and it's hard to leave any out but before you know it , you've already reached #50 and you still have dozens of songs that you love so much

Kissing some kind stranger's lipsErotica's emotional centerpiece and its 3rd single release finds Madonna lamenting a love gone wrong that she just can't seem to let go. Instaed of facing the situation head on, she uses other vices (cigarettes, drinking, strange men) to escape her reality. Even though the character in the song describes herself as "bad", Madonna's delivery paints a picture of a very sad and vulnerable woman who you empathize with rather than revile. Her versatility on the vocals - going from a high head voice to her deep somber lower register - further emphasizes the emotional roller coaster the song's protagonist is going through. Is this autobiographical or just an observation of someone she met or knew in her life? I don't think she has ever revealed the inspiration and I'm not sure I want her to - I like that there's a mystery to it. It's a shame that this song has never found its way into a concert tour but at least until or if that ever happens, we have this incredible SNL performance to savor:

This time I'm not only getting, I'm holding my manThough she had gained a lot of critical respect with the Like A Prayer album , many didn't believe she could pull off something as challenging as Soundheim - those people couldn't have been more wrong. Not only does she pull it off, but she makes the song her own as if it was specifically written for her and when you hear her sing it, you can't imagine anyone else doing it justice. Her vocal is phenomenal here, rising from a sexy purr to a full-throated growl and back again. Her delivery is also spot on - not only capturing the spirit of Breathless Mahoney but also a bit of her own celebrity persona as well. Of course, one cannot think of this song without also thinking of the absolutely showstopping performance from the Academy Awards. Despite being visibly nervous, she absolutely owns the performance and the stage and left no doubts about her vocal and performance abilities.What do you think of this song? -
