  1. Madonna-Express-Yourself-29855.jpg

    [spoken:]
    Come on girls
    Do you believe in love?
'Cause I got something to say about it
And it goes something like this

    [Chorus:]

Don't go for second best baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know, you've got to
Make him express how he feels
And maybe then you'll know your love is real

    You don't need diamond rings
    Or eighteen karat gold
Fancy cars that go very fast
You know they never last, no, no
What you need is a big strong hand
To lift you to your higher ground
Make you feel like a queen on a throne
Make him love you till you can't come down
    (You'll never come down)

    [chorus]

Long stem roses are the way to your heart
But he needs to start with your head
    Satin sheets are very romantic
What happens when you're not in bed
You deserve the best in life
So if the time isn't right then move on
    Second best is never enough
You'll do much better baby on your own
    (Baby on your own)

    [chorus]

    Express yourself
    (You've got to make him)
    Express himself
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not

    [intermediate:]

And when you're gone he might regret it
Think about the love he once had
Try to carry on, but he just won't get it
He'll be back on his knees

    To express himself
    (You've got to make him)
    Express himself
    Hey hey

What you need is a big strong hand
To lift you to your higher ground
Make you feel like a queen on a throne
Make him love you till you can't come down
    (You'll never come down)

    [intermediate]

    So please

    [chorus]

    Express yourself
    (You've got to make him)
    Express himself
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not
    Express yourself
    (You've got to make him)
    So you can respect yourself
    Hey, hey
So if you want it right now, then make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not

The second single from the opus that is the Like A Prayer album is an empowerment anthem if there ever was one. Madonna tells us not to settle for second best in love but I think the song's message can be taken even further to never settle in life in general. If we don't say what we want and fight to get it, we will never achieve it. I love this song so much in all of its versions from the funky Sly and The Family Stone inspired album version to the sexy futuristic dance remix in the video. One of the things I love most is her confidence and the rich soulfulness of her vocal delivery. She sounds powerful and she makes you feel that way too. On a personal note, I always think of this song getting me through some rough patches with people I thought were friends but who turned out to be anything but in the end. The song's message lifted me up then and continues to do so for me every time I hear it. Not just a classic Madonna song but a classic period.

Favorite Lyric: You deserve the best in life so if the time isn't right then move on

Favorite Musical Part: The horns in the album version

Favorite Vocal Part: The last echoed "Express Yourself" from the video version

One Word That Sums Up This Song: Empowerment

Favorite Live Version: The BAT Tour

  3. Or is it just me?

Other than Rebel Heart and Wash All Over Me I haven't listened to any of the new tracks that have leaked. Not for any noble reasons, I just don't want the demos to cloud my judgement when the actual album comes out. I might listen to them AFTER but for now I don't want to get used to them and have the songs feel "old" when the album is finally released. I just think it'll take the excitement out.

So has anyone else not listened?

I'm with you Napoleon! I haven't even listened to Rebel Heart or WAOM. I want the first time I hear the album to be when I have the final CD in my hands. However, when we get the final traçklist I will definitely listen to the songs that didn't make the cut.
