  1. You can interpret as much as possible into the MDNA era and it's surely open to a lot of nice interpretations, but still the fact is she didn't present a cohesive theme for this album and the era in general. Til Confessions, she was able to spin a common thread throughout the era as well, for example with her looks and style of music videos.

People remembered her past albums either through the musical theme or through her main looks - they remember ROL as her going spiritual, Music is associated with her cowboy look by everyone, they remember COADF for putting on a retro disco look, but what can one associate with MDNA? What is the main theme, main look? She never really picked up the drug theme presented in the album cover. The booklet is strung together with random pics.

Yes, the MDNA album & era had many different facets which is great, but she didn't manage to spin that common thread, to make a connection. There is no song from the album one can listen to, no picture of her from the era one can look at, and say "THAT is essentially MDNA, that is the essential look, the style & music she went with!" (same goes to Hard Candy btw, IMO).

    Agree.

  2. Yes, but some people don't buy singles regardless of whether it has a B side. I don't buy singles personally because I don't like all those remixes. And a lot of times singles now are just digital rather than physical so you'd only get a digital copy of the B side. I'd rather have a deluxe version cd rather than a collection of singles. If every other artist is selling extra copies with two versions, why should Madonna be required to not do that and thus miss out on some sales. I really don't think most people who may be more casual fans would not buy the standard waiting for a deluxe. Aren't they usually released around the same time? I don't get the big issue with deluxe version. And I don't see anything wrong with the title I Fucked Up. Don't we all say that from time to time? Or are you so perfect you don't say it and you don't fuck up to begin with?

I say it, but swearing in songs is a different thing. I expect more poetic lyrics or smart metaphors. Swearing lowers the quality of the song.

  3. Yes, but songs aren't released as b sides really anymore, because artists don't release that many singles from an album. Wouldn't b sides be the same as doing a deluxe version because you would have to buy the singles to get the b sides not just the album? Wouldn't that be another "cheap" way to get more money? Do you think Madonna should just give away extra songs for free on the Internet? She has the right to make money from her work. I see nothing wrong with doing a deluxe version. You don't have to buy the standard version if you don't want to, you can just buy the deluxe version. Pretty much every artist now does a standard and a deluxe version. Do you object to other artists doing that or just Madonna?

Some of the songs on the deluxe version like Best Friend and I F*cked up definitely continue the theme of the album about her divorce. In fact, they are some of the most personal songs on the album.

Well, deluxe versions are just cheap way to make some money not just for Madonna, I am speaking in general. It makes more sense to release a bonus song as a B-side on some single, that way Madonna would sell more singles. Imagine if Madonna release an album and nobody buys it because everybody is waiting for deluxe version which will be released later.

Like I said, bonus songs should be seen as a part of the original album. Yes, Best Friend and I Fucked Up are personal and thematically would have been great for more personal album. Lyrically they are good, although the line "I Fucked Up" is horrible and stupid, she could have wrote better and smarter line. Musically they are mediocre, actually Best Friend is not bad. It has I'm Addicted vibe (because the same producers work on both songs), but it also evokes HC and sounds like an HC left over. In production terms, I Fucked Up is horrible, no soul and emotions, totally not Madonna style. It sounds like she made it during the period of Time Stood Still/ American Pie.

Anyway, many people even don't know that 4 additional songs on MDNA deluxe are bonus songs, so many will not have good opinion about MDNA because of B-day song. Actually I don't know are these songs marked as bonus songs, but it is a bad thing if casual fans don't know that fact.

  4. I fully agree, although there are some lighthearted and possibly throwaway tracks on MDNA, but she's also never released a studio album with 16 tracks before, either.

Actually MDNA has 12 songs. Additional 4 songs on deluxe version are just bonus songs. These songs shouldn't have an impact on the quality of album at all, Beautiful Killer is much better song than some crappy songs that are on the standard version.

Instead of releasing these 4 songs as B-sides or letting them leak on the internet, Madonna and her people decided to release a deluxe version with some additional cheap songs and get more money. That's why there are no unrealesed MDNA tracks.

  5. Sorry, i don't agree. The story in MDNA is just whishful thinking imo. But i respect your ideas because it's true that some songs are heavily related to her feelings at the moment.

Agree. MDNA had some great themes, but it doesn't have a main story. It is just a collection of great and bad songs.

  6. Why can't she be a little more mature than the last two albums, but still work in the dance/electronic arena? My favorite albums by her tend to be stuff like Ray of Light, Music, Confessions, some of the electronic influenced stuff on AL like Nobody Knows Me. That is what I would personally like. She needs to find the happy medium. But I do not think she should throw out any dance element and go back to the whole Something to Remember/Evita era. I like songs like Falling Free, Behind the Bars and Masterpiece, but I think they work better as a contrast to more uptempo songs on an album. I wouldn't like a whole album of those type of songs with no uptempo stuff. But it seems that when most people say "mature" on here, it means no dance, no electronics, just ballads. Im not against her being more mature, but not it if it's to be an AC type of artist. I'm all for mature if people mean something like Ray of LIght and Confessions that still has an uptempo electronic element on some songs with introspective lyrics. But I just feel so many people here have this stereotype that if you are older you cannot do anything electronic anymore and I think it's ridiculous.

    1. You like electronic music and that is your reason why she should make another electropop album. Like I said in previous posts, Madonna has already done too much electronic music. ROL - pop meets electronica, Music - pop meets electropop and rock/country vibe, AL - was like an extended version of Music (although there are big diference between AL and Music), COADF - electropop, HC - maybe small elements of electrpop, MDNA - electropop. Isn't that enough for you? Don't other fans, who like more her music before ROL, deserve an album which will be closer to classic pop sound of LAP, E, BS or TB?

    2. I like electrpop, I wouldn't mind if she make a few new songs, but I don't want an entire electropop album. There should be something for everyone: a few electropop songs (dance, ballads, experimental), a few songs that are more organic and more classic pop, a few ballads, a few experimental songs ( a new sound)....

    3. Nobody said that Madonna is too old for electropop music, there is no such kind of stereotype you are talking about.

    4. Nobody said that dance songs and elctronic music isn't mature. Nobody said she needs to make just ballads if she wants to make mature album. Deeper and Deeper and GGW are dance songs. GGW isn't mature, it is generic and has bad chorus, while Deeper and Deeper is mature dance song, it has mature and good lyrics, great melody and production... If you can't make a difference between these songs, then you obviously don't know what mature song or album means.

GGW, B-day, TUTR.... these songs aren't mature, she is more capable than that, but many fans think such songs are the final level of her creativity and music strenght. Where is the artist who made masterpieces like LAP, E or ROL? It is OK if she wants to make dance songs, but why can't they be strong like LAP, E or ROL? BS, Music and AL are also mature albums. TB is a great album, her first serious album, while COADF is like a 2000s version of TB - cathcy songs, but there is a certain level of mature sound.

  7. Speaking of HC, I wouldn't say HC is a pop album. It is more r'n'b with elements of pop and hip hop.

Madonna failed to connect with the style of Pharell and Timbaland. HC doesn't sound as Madonna album at all.

She stopped makling more freestyle pop songs like LAP or Deeper and Deeper where you can dance just the way you want to. Now, it seems, she is making dance songs that she can perform on her tours, songs that can have specific choreography...

Her next album will be dance and electropop again, no doubt. Since she always works with people who already worked with her (remixes, tour music), I think Avicci, who made GGW remix, will produce a few songs on her next album. Of course there will be also a new producer she hasn't worked with.

  8. I think we all can agree that album success doesn't matter that much. Album quality is much more important. If she deliveres another generic album she won't be unique on the charts, there will always be something more trashy and more popular than her music.

Mature album is the priority. No more childish lyrics and stupid chorus like the one in GGW. No more generic production.

It is annoying when fans try to define Madonna as a dance artist. Yes, she is very famous for her dance songs, but she is also famous for her ballads and other experimental works. If Madonna would do the same thing like she has done on her first album, then she would be like Britney - just weak catchy songs, a few great songs on the album...

@Glindathegood Even if Madonna choses world music for her next album, it still will be a pop album, but with elements of world music. I suppose when fans say they want rock album or jazz album, they think of pop album with elements of rock or jazz. Madonna is a pop artist, nobody wants her to change her music style. Only with HC Madonna failed to create a pop album.

I am a big fan of electropop and synthpop but she seriously needs to let it go a little bit. Her entire music of new millenium is about electrpop, at least she could mix electro msuic with organic instruments and clear voice insted of lame vocoders.

Organic sound would be a welcome change. If she wants to continue to make dance music then she could make something like Vogue or Deeper and Deeper, which isn't completly organic, but it is very close, instead of songs like Celebration and GGW.

Her every decade was different. Her music of 80s was catchy, friendly and powerful. Her 90s music was the most artistic, mature sound and lyrics, sophisticated music, clear sound, experimental...

Her 2000s music is all about electropop (HC is exception) and dance. In 2010s she continue with electropop music, but it is time for a change. At least she can make more conceptaul, cohesive albums, but againg there should be some diversity in sound.

  9. I agree she shouldn't work with rappers, but Frank Ocean isn't hip hop, he's melodic R&B. R&B and hip hop/rap aren't the same thing.

I don't think an alternative or Coldplay type of sound would work for her. I don't think it suits her. Never been a fan of Coldplay. I find them quite boring and dull.

I know hip hop and r'n'n aren't the same thing. I just said Madonna shouldn't work with such musicians.

  10. Daft Punk would be interesting, but it will be the same DANCE music she already made with Mirwais and Stuart Price. Frank Ocean would be a bad decision. She should't work with hip hop/ r'n'b people.

Madonna's entire music of the 21th century is about electropop and vocoders. An extreme musical change would be a big refreshment.

All acoustic album would be bad idea, a few songs would be OK. Just no more acoustic guitar. I want piano.

She definitely should make more classic pop songs in the style of LAP/Erotica (organic sound mixed with compure sound, but the final result isn't electrpop, then ballads with orchestra, clear sound and voice).

  11. I have 3 questions:

    - Which of the two received more critical acclaim ? Confessions on a Dance Floor or Music ?

    - Ray of Light aside, which Madonna was received extremely well by critics?

    - What are her top 5 most critically accalimed albums ? I'd say :

    1- Ray of Light

    2- Like a Prayer

    3- Confessions

    4- Music

    5- Erotica ?

Music received more critical acclaim than COADF, because it delivered something new.

ROL, LAP, E and BS were well received by critics. The same goes for COADF and Music.

  12. Madonna as a true music artist showed that pop music doesn't have to be just catchy and shallow, she showed pop music as serious and artistic. Here is the list that represents Madonna as an artist:

    1. Bedtime Story

    2. Vogue

    3. Deeper And Deeper

    4. Oh Father

    5. Secret Garden

    6. Like A Prayer

    7. Express Yourself

    8. Frozen

    9. Justify My Love

    10. Papa Don't Preach

  13. MDNA is not a bad album but it lacked a couple of strong singles that would pull in the listeners.i m sure she stil has the potential of delivering a "Music" or a "frozen" once more.I just hope it's soon.

I can't say MDNA is a good album, it is somewhere between bad and good. It has some really great and creative songs (Gang Bang, I'm Addicted, Some Girls, Love Spent, Falling Free), good and decent songs (IDGA, BK, GMAYL)

B-day, Superstar, I Fucked Up were jokes. Best Friend is interesting, but sounds like a HC outtake. TUTR is a generic crap and absolutely not material for cd single. GGW is also generic, if it vwas less generic and had better chorus (lyrics, production) it could have been a great song. GMAYL is also cheap and childish, but less generic than GGW and TUTR. I'm A Sinner is decent, but alerady heard and not so interesting and listenable.

Every Madonna's lead single usually was a new sound for Madonna and different music than songs on charts. She could have done that again if GB was a lead single.

I'm Addicted isn't radio friendly, but I wish it was a single with a great video.

IDGA could have worked in USA and Some Girls in Europe. IDGA is more a mix of pop and urban music, while Some Girls is a mix of electro and euro pop music.

BK is radio friendly and classic Madonna.

  14. lav is actually one of my fav. albums by her! i know i may be in the minority with that. and hc is great besides the awful spanish lesson song.Incredible and heartbeat being my favorites on the album

OK, but liking something doesn't mean it is a great album. I also like LAV and MDNA, although they are just mainstream mediocre albums.

  15. Actually, Kate Bush's only tour ever in 1980 was very thematic and theatrical. She even pioneered the headset mic. Not saying Madonna ripped off or even was inspired by Kate, but Blond Ambition was not the very first to utilize a staging and make the audience think. :-)

Right. Why do people forget Kate? Also Grace Jones' One Man Show tour (1981) was like a theatre.

  16. hi,

Madryan summed up what I've being trying to say with the word "gestate." That would have saved me so much writing. Thanks.

    Glindathegood:

Do you think that if LAP had been released on MDNA or Hard Candy it would eventually become the "classic" that it is having been released during her heyday? I actually don't think so. Let's be real: it's a pop song, not Beethoven's 5th. I don't think that most people would give it a chance to flourish. This is why I originally suggested that she release new stuff in a non-restrictive fashion so that she isn't left with the tour as the sole means of showcasing new material.

So, say she releases an album within the next two years and immediately goes on tour; we'll be back where we are now - liking the new songs, but lining up to see LAP again in a nostalgic haze.

Can't we give new material our luvin'

In understand what you are trying to say, but if LAP was released on HC or MDNA in its original form it would would have become her classic. It has nothing to do with her current popularity. A great and perfect song will never be ignored.

I don't care abou her success on the charts, I care about her creativity and music quality. HC and MDNA are some of her weakest albums, we all know she is able to make better things. Her problem is that she follows the crowd.

  17. I really like it because it harks back to the Erotica album for me from the point she sings 'It's so hypnotic...' I loved the video, especially the dance segment...the dig at Caca at the end was also a nice touch. I love the MDNA tour version too. The song is obviously not on par with the Madonna canon like Vogue, Into the Groove or Like a Prayer but it's definitely on par with songs like Deeper and Deeper and Gambler. I loved the fact that GGW saw the return of one of my all-time favourite Madonna looks too:

GGW on par with Deeper and Deeper and Gambler? OK, Gambler is a weak catchy song, but to compare GGW to Deeper and Deeper is a sin. How can they be on the same level if GGW is just a trashy generic pop song and D&D is a pure pop perfection with mature lyrics.

  18. Probably the beginning or the end of 2014, then she will tour in 2015.

I just want her to make mature and serious pop perfection, I don't want cheap teen pop songs (TUTR, GMAYL...) and no more generic sound.

I would be nice if she decides to work with old producers:

    - Patrick Leonard - beautifull ballads with elements of classic music

    - Shep Pettibone - dark songs, pop disco, sophisticated sound, melancholic ballads

    - Andre Betts - jazzy moments mixed with pop

    - Stephen Bray - he could make fanastic pop music with computer sound, but the final result won't be electropop

    - Stuart Price - he should work on remixes and song reinventions on her next tour

I think she will choose one producer from MDNA album, I hope it will be Klas Ahlund. He already proved he is a great producer (Robyn's albums).
