  1. I was 14 and waiting for this album to come out was the most agonizing experience of my life at the time. I rushed to the record store in town, after school, went straight home and popped in the stereo. I closed my bedroom door and gave explicit instructions to everyone in family that I was NOT to be disturbed. :lmao: (I still do this with every new album - the first listen is an EXPERIENCE). I unfolded the lyric booklet so I could read along as she was singing. I was shaking with anticipation as I started listening. My expectations and hopes were otherworldly. This was my first new Madonna album. I had been a completely obsessed megafan for just over a year at that time, so I missed out on every new release pre-Erotica. This was truly the biggest thing in my life. All that being said, I cannot lie - initially, I was let down. It took a few listens before I realized its brilliance. I was disappointed, at first, that there was a lot of speaking instead of singing (or, what felt like a lot at the time). I didn't pick up on anything being particularly catchy, like the Madonna I was so used to hearing. But with each spin, I fell deeper and deeper. :inlove: And little did I know then how much her music would change and evolve through the years, and keep getting better.

Now, it's forever a part of me. It truly helped define and mold me as a young teenage gay boy, coming to terms with who I was and the man I would become. I owe a great deal of my strength and self-acceptance to this album, and of course, to Madonna in general.

  3. I don't wanna talk about it right now

Just hold me while I cry my eyes out

    I can't be a superhero right now

Even hearts made out of steel can break down

Every revolution starts inside a broken heart

Every new beginning starts when something falls apart

Can't you hear a voice inside that's calling out your name

What you risk is what you value, nothing is in vain

  4. Wow, so many incredible lyrics. She really is an amazing songwriter!!

There are way too many for me to list, but Rebel Heart has some of the best ever:

Who am I to decide what should be done?
If this is the end, then let it come.

    We're only here to love

    Like there's no tomorrow

So let's live each moment like

    Our time is only borrowed

Love is pain and pain is art

    Show me your graffiti heart

    Never say never

    Anything is possible

    Always been a rebel

    Overcoming obstacles

    I can't give you perfect

But I can give you forever

I said oh no, I want more

That's not what I'm looking for - what an incredibly powerful line, it gives me chills. This is MADONNA, through and through

So I took the road less traveled by

And I barely made it out alive

    Through the darkness

    Somehow, I survived

    Tough love

I knew it from the start

    Deep down in the depths

    Of my rebel heart

If you try and fail, get up again

Destiny will choose you in the end

If you don't make the choice

And you don't use your voice

Someone else will speak for you instead

What you want is just within your reach

But you gotta practice what you preach

You pay with sweat and tears

    Overcome your fears

Never let the fire inside you leave

    I can't

    Icon

    2 letters apart

    One step away

From being lost in the dark

    Just shine your light

    Like a beautiful star

Show the world who you are

    Who you are

Yeah, there's another side of you no one sees

    There's a burning fire that's underneath

Baby don't you know you were meant to be

    Born to be

    Meant to be

    ICONIC

    FUCK YEAH

  5. I still remember how I felt after hearing this song for the first time. I was listening to the radio and the dramatic intro immediately got my attention. Then the voice kicked in and I realized this is a new Madonna song. Omg I was stunned!! I had no idea she was capable of pulling off a vocal as powerful as this. The "you think that you are strong but you are weak....." part nearly brought tears to my eyes. Her voice was just so perfect! The wait til Evita seemed to drag after this. I was so ready to hear a full album with this "new voice".

On a side note, this time of year always reminds me of this song. That video with the leaves and just the overall sound/vibe of the song is very fall/winter.

All of this!! My very favorite ballad ever. I honestly believe it saved my life.

  6. Oh man, my memory is so incredibly foggy. I was 10 years old at the time. My uncle (my mom's younger brother) has lived in NY forever, and we were planning a trip to visit him. A month or so before the visit, he called us to tell us that he got tickets for us the see "the play Madonna is in" because he knew how much I loved her. :)

As far as the play, I'm pretty sure a lot of the subject matter and dialogue went way over my head, but I do remember just staring at Madonna the entire time in absolute awe. I just couldn't believe that I was in the same room as her! :wow::inlove:

She looked so beautiful and I thought she did great.

After the performance, we went to wait by the stage door to try to catch a glimpse of her leaving. She eventually came out with Sean and my dad took a couple of pictures (this one being the best):

That moment happened so fast. I remember she practically made a beeline from the stage door to her car. We were standing right by the car.

The day we saw the performance (July 1, 1988) was the same day of the Letterman interview w/her and Sandra, so I'm guessing it was taped that same day?

OH and the next day my family and I were out bouncing around Manhattan and we saw Sean eating by himself at a sidewalk cafe.

So yeah, that's my little story!! Can't believe that was almost 30 years ago.

AMAZING!! Thank you so much for sharing this!
