Madonna's Costumes for her Sticky and Sweet Tour

    By Jacob Bernstein

    From WWD Issue 08/05/2008

Most people are lucky to work with Madonna once. Costume designer Arianne Phillips has lasted 11 years, from the singer's Pre-Raphaelite look for "Ray of Light" to the urban cowgirl of "Music" to the Patty Hearst look of "American Life" and on and on and on. In other words, measured in Madonna time, Phillips is roughly 77 years old.

Still, La Ciccone's upcoming "Sticky and Sweet" tour has had its own unique challenges for her longtime stylist. "Normally we prep in April and May, and open in June," says Phillips. "This time, the tour begins in August. It's a nightmare. Everyone in Italy and France is on a beach sunning themselves."

Thankfully, everyone is a bit of an exaggeration, as Phillips goes on to detail a mile-long list of willing collaborators and everything they've designed for the trek, which begins Aug. 23 in Cardiff, Wales, and comes to the United States in early October. Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci designed two outfits, while Tom Ford provided bespoke suits for the band. Three pairs of shoes have been custom-made by Miu Miu, there are thigh-high boots courtesy of Stella McCartney, sunglasses from Moschino, and other outfits and odds and ends from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, and Jeremy Scott.

Like her shows in the past, this tour will be divided into four sections. The first references gangsta pimp and Art Deco with Givenchy costumes. This, it would seem, is Madonna's current take on her longest-running fashion inspiration — the dominatrix. "It's a theme that runs throughout her career" Phillips says. "She's not afraid of being hard." The second section has been termed "Old School," and harkens back to Madonna's early days in New York, with Scott's outfit and some vintage prints from Keith Haring, the late graffiti artist and friend of Madonna who died of AIDS in 1990. "He and Madonna were friends. If her were alive, it would be his 50th birthday as well. So I thought, 'What if we revisited that?'" Afterward, there's a gypsy section with more costumes from Givenchy. "Riccardo's a new young talent. If you look at Madonna's history with fashion, that makes him an obvious choice." Finally, there's a futuristic rave section with lots of Japanese influences.

And while The New York Times complained recently about Madonna's style choices, Phillips says getting older has had little effect on her sense of fashion adventure. "She always wants to push the envelope. There are no vanity considerations based on her age." As Phillips adds seconds later, "She looks good in everything.

  2. EXCLUSIVE And here's our latest update on the Sticky & Sweet track list. We heard that the list of songs that we report below is basically the FINAL one and it includes video and live interludes. But before going into it, here are some exclusive tidbits on what we will be seeing and hearing during this great show!

The show features four main section. The show opener, Candy Shop, has now a longer intro compared to the promo tour version. A musical intro a la Drowned World Tour, with bits and pieces of song form Hard Candy that we will be hearing later in the show fades into the "C-A-N-D-Y" intro from the promo tour.

The clock ticking theme from 4 minutes can be heard several times during the show. In the show intro, in Vogue and in the "Get Stupid" interlude, which reminds of the Confessions Tour's Sorry Video interlude. In Get Stupid there are samples of Give It 2 Me, 4 Minutes and Beat Goes On and it's about our chance to save our planet from the various damages we created.

The use of music samples is very big on this tour. Many of the classic hits are musically re-arranged as mash-ups and the songs are sung on musical tracks heavely sample-ing other dance songs. Like A Prayer, for example, which, as previously reported by M-Tribe, has entered the set list is now replacing Impressive Instant and it's delivered using musical parts of the 1992 dance hit by Felix "Don't You Want Me".

Into The Groove, that contains a small sample of Madonna's Jump, is also delivered using musical parts of another dance song "Toop Toop" by Cassius, while Borderline is a great "rocky/ska" re-invention of the classic 1983 ballad.

The first video interlude, a fast and speeded up version of the James Bond theme Die Another Day, features exclusive new footage of Madonna as a boxeur, from the brand new photoshoot by Tom Munro for the Tour Book.

The second video interlude mashes up Madonna's Rain with the Eurythmics' Here Comes The Rain Again, using their original version and leading to Devil Wouldn't Recognize You. Originally supposed to play the piano herself on this song, Madonna will now be placed on the piano, reminessing a bit the Sooner Or Later performance from Blond Ambition.

After La Isla Bonita mixed with Lela Pala Tute, there's a live interlude with Romanian/Gipsy song "Doli Doli" which is not sung by Madonna, who will be back on stage to close the section with a fierce rendition of the Accademy Award winning song "You Must Love Me" by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

BRITNEY SPEARS TO BE CUT FROM MADONNA TOUR

Britney Spears' filmed scenes for Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour could be cut out, it has emerged. The 'Like a Virgin' singer and Spears recorded the scenes to be broadcast on huge screens.

But Madonna -- known to friends as Em -- "hates" the video and is thinking about getting rid of it altogether.

A source close to Madonna says, "Britney looks amazing in the video but Em watched it and told them to take it out because she hated it.

"It was a scene where Britney was pretending to rip her own hair out."

It was claimed earlier this week that Madonna is in "meltdown" mode and has been ordered to cut back her work schedule.

A source said, "Madonna is doing less than OK. She has been rehearsing for the tour and she is totally miserable.

"She's down physically and mentally. The situation with Guy is very, very tense. The way the press are going crazy with the A-Rod story, her brother's book and her physical exhaustion are all taking their toll.

"Family tension with her father and two of her other siblings has also been awkward.

"She feels nobody has taken her side. One of her closest pals says she has never seen Madonna so low. She has been feeling low and looking really gaunt.

"Madonna was told to go soft on work and rehearsals, so she will now take one proper day off every week and go easy in the mornings.

"She has a blood analysis done every few days — including one during last Friday's rehearsal in front of everyone."

Spears, meanwhile, has been nominated for a VMA for her Piece of Me video.

  5. She better not kill beat goes on with that other song. It's enough in one song but 2???? WTF is madonna thinking.

I think it's fucking stupid to include Britney so much in her show, what is this, Madonna's tour? or lets pay tribute to Britney tour? putting her on a screen video during Human Nature is awful enough. If she appears in one more song i swear i'll throw a fucking lollipop at the bitch! (at Vadge that is)

  6. Cameras started to roll today on the video that Britney Spears is making for Madonna's upcoming Sticky & Sweet tour, which, sources tell E! News, will be the opening video for each show .The "Are you ready to rumble?!" video, if you will.

    *vomits*

If this is a 'lets pay tribute to Britney tour' then i won't even bother.. :manson:

  7. Madonna to get naked with Britney[/color]

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showb...icle1402176.ece

    347jxmp.jpg

THEY will need to invent a 27th letter of the alphabet to classify this.

If you thought MADONNA and BRITNEY SPEARS’ snog at the MTV Awards in 2003 was X-rated, their latest collaboration makes that look tame.

The Sun revealed on Saturday how the Queen Of Pop and its fallen princess will join forces for Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet tour.

Now details of their sessions have reached me — and they are hotter than the Los Angeles police on Britney driving the wrong way up a one-way street with both her sons on her lap.

The pair’s sexy shenanigans will be broadcast to the crowd on Madge’s upcoming world tour via 20ft screens. What a terrifying thought. I hope Britney doesn’t ask if her bum looks big on that.

They will perform a mash-up of Madge track Beat Goes On and Britney’s Piece Of Me, while they are unwrapped from costumes that can only be described as bondage mummy.

The pop duo will be wrapped in BANDAGES which will then be unravelled by leather thong-clad male dancers in scenes that would put even RUSSELL BRAND’s moral compass in a spin.

An on-set source revealed: “It’s absolutely classic Madonna. Probably the raunchiest stuff she has ever done. It leaves nothing to the imagination and will be very controversial.

“Britney and Madonna are unwrapped like mummies, to appear together almost naked apart from tiny leather bondage pants and knee-high boots.

“They then dance closely together, pressing their hands and bodies together.

“There will be big rows over whether it is sexy, shocking or both.”

Britney has been filming scenes at a Hollywood studio and was snapped leaving a nearby hair salon looking more spruced up than she has for ages.

It’s good that Madonna is helping her rebuild her career, but I’m still not convinced I’m ready to see her stripped down to her smalls.

The Toxic singer will also perform to Madge’s 1995 track Human Nature.

And in one scene to be broadcast during the tour — which opens in Cardiff on August 23 — Britney loses her mind after getting stuck in a lift in a short film by New York photographer STEVEN KLEIN.

The source added: “We’ll see Spears going crazy in an enclosed space — screaming, pulling her hair and banging her fists on the lift walls as it’s stuck between floors.

    “She really loses it.”

I think that is what luvvies call method acting.

  8. MADONNAdownload Exclusive BREAKING NEWS

Madonna left New York City early this morning, MADONNAdownload can report the queen of pop just landed in Los Angeles and about to meet Britney Spears in a sound stage, reportetly to shoot a video for the Sticky & Sweet tour.

    DEVELOPING STORY, MORE TO FOLLOW...

  9. Since our previous exclusive report about the Human Nature/Gimme More mash up to be performed during the Sticky & Sweet tour a few things have changed.

The song, which is the third one in the set list, will still feature Britney on screens but has gone back to a more classic version of Madonna's Human Nature with just a few insert of Britney saying "It's Britney Bitch" along the way.

As you may remember we also reported that there are going to be more surprises in the set list. One more HUGE hit of Madonna's career is back and it's a fan favourite too. Vogue from the 1990 album "I'm Breathless" is indeed the fourth song in the show, coming after Human Nature and closes the first set of the show. Vogue is to be performed with a remarkable new arrangement containing samples and elements from 4 Minutes and Nelly Furtado's Promiscuos Girl. The people who apparently heard it say it's a great version.

We also previously reported that the First Album song Bordeline was part of the set. We can now add it comes in the second segment, after Heartbeat while Spanish Lesson now comes before Miles Away and not after.

To summarize it a bit here's a look at how things looks like right now!

  10. MadonnaTribe:

"Apparently there won't be a video intro like in the previous tour, and that they may do that Candy letter at the beginning as well. I've asked my sources and I've been told that "as of now" Candy shop and the tour intro is just like the promo tour. I'm sure we will have a different costume."
