What I understood from his comment is that (on daily situations) people in Argentina don't refer to themselves as Americans, not because they don't see themselves as Americans or much less because they think of gringos or yankees but because they refer to themselves as Argentinians.

He even said that in media reports the new Pope is considered as the second American Pope because Francis was the first, as he was Argentinian and therefore American.

    Exactly this.

What about Canadians and Mexicans? When you say "norteamericanos" don't you include those too? For a Bulgarian if you say "North American" you include the Canadians and Mexicans...

    Canadians: Canadienses

    Mexicans: Mexicanos

USA Americans: Norteamericanos o estadounidenses. (And yankees in a more informal way)

North America is Canada + USA + Mexico though. The teach us that in school. And they are norteamericanos, but it's mostly used for people from the USA.

Really? Is that how the rest of South American countries call the ppl from USA?

Don't know about rest of South America, but here in Argentina for sure we call people from USA, norteamericanos most of the time. Also estadounidenses and yankees.

Out of curiosity can I ask you in Argentina (or the part of Latin America you now live in) how has the media declared Pope Leo, as the first or second American Pope?

Here in Argentina, most media call him the second American Pope, the first North American Pope (Primer Papa norteamericano)

  4. I'm Argentinean. I live in America (the continent). I've never called myself American (or heard some else in my country call themselves "American"). It's an old term not really used by anyone even though we DO live in America and Pope Francis was the first American Pope.

And we don't call people from USA american either. We call them norteamericanos (north americans) or Yankees.

I do get why the appropiated the term since is part of their country name (United States of America)

But isn't it interesting that they blame the government for their financial issues? They want the government to do something about their paychecks? Isn't that Communism? How about telling your employer to pay you more? Seriously, the lack of overall education and the lack of understanding of general economics in the U.S. is downright shocking, although not surprising, the system is supposed to work exactly like that. And this is something the U.S. is really "top" in the World. You have to look really hard in Europe and other places for people to seriously blame things like inflation on the government.

I get you but it's not the only place in the world. South America is very similar, people do blame the government for inflation. In Argentina we had a centre-left goverment during Covid, and last year people end up voting an extreme right (new) party because they wanted fast solutions to the economy and the inflation problem. The government is anti abortion, gays and trans people, BUT inflation is going down.

They should have got rid of Biden last year and then she would have had a whole year to campaign.

    Oh well lessons learned hopefully

I think the Covid impact is bigger than we give credit for. Most countries around the world changed their administration because of its impact in their economy and society. It's like people don't want anything related to those years.

Trump lost the 2020 mainly because of COVID (I'm sure had there not been a pandemic that year he would have been re-elected), but he is remember more for the 2016-2019 era than 2020.

And Harris (whic is part of the Biden administration) is losing this election because of how they handle the economy during 2020-2024.Yep, they actually handle it really well or as best as they could, but they are seen as responsible for some of the after effects it had in economy, like inflation.

Most people don't vote thinking about abortion, gay right, social justice or democracy. They vote thinking in how much money they have in their wallet.

At least he won’t be able to run again, but seriously what the actual fuck.

Just wait when he gets in the White House. He will try anything to stay in power.

I disagree. Americans don't want a female president. That's it. She had a ton of charisma.

    100% agreed.

this is what the left has to focus on in regards to trump.. he failed and didn't answer any questions.

I think most people are very shallow with politics and only care about how much money they have on their wallet, or how much groceries cost.

Is inflation that terrible in USA? And was economy that great with Trump? because that's the only explanation I have for him winning again.

The latest polls indicate Trump will win enough electoral votes to become a president.

Polls do seem to benefit Trump this week, especially in swing states. And I bet there are more "hidden" Trump supporters than there are Harris ones. The 2 previous elections clearly show that, Trump overperformed the polls.

But, early voting is giving Harris good news too. Not only more people are voting (which is always good news for the democratic party), but also she is having more advantage in swing states over Trump, than Biden did in 2020.

It will be too close to call.

Seems it goes that way sofar. Harris campaign seems in a panic mode, because the black men and latinos do not support Harris as much as they did Biden in 2020. It seems Trump would win if something doesn't change soon in Harris side. That's why she is doing lots of media appearances since last week.

Just because she is a woman. Can't believe it's 2024 and the USA never had a female president.

Yes.  JD Vance is a terrible choice but I still find it unbelievable that anyone supports Trump.   Trump is a deranged, idiotic dangerous moron and how he has any supporters is a blight on America.

I still don't get how many women, people of colour and some gays support him.

I’m seeing a ton of enthusiasm about her VP pick. Videos of him circulating online make him out to be a real down to earth man of the people.

I think he is a great choice as a VP. And he coined the term "Weird" for Trump and Vance which has gone viral really quick on the campaign.

The technology was so innovative that it was navigated by an Xbox controller and had no windows.  These people are goners.

It's surprising that people with so much money sometimes can be so stupid. If you are doing this kind of risky "adventure" don't you check previously the history of the company you are signing your life to?

Oh so you haven't been here on those years and your judgement was based on the vision of others?
Actually Bolsonaro lost here in São Paulo  and the gays who support him is a big minority. I may think your friend and the people you've heard from are privileged white cis men? If so, it's easy to understand why they say horrors of a government that gave dignity and favored minorities and lower classes.

It's ok.  I don't support Bolsonaro and I don't support corrupt politicians like Lula that take advantage from poor people either.
