Why paying so much attention to Germany? They've always been a Janet Jackson land. Fact.

Well outside of the US and UK it's the biggest music market for her. She shifted almost 100k tickets for the last tour over the course of 5 concerts, so there's still clearly a lot of public interest as well.

This whole press situation really is a bit perplexing. She rarely had it easy with critics but this time it almost looks like a competition between newspapers on who writes the most damning article (already started with the Eurovision performance). And we're not talking some obscure local papers or tabloids, but reputable big papers with (theoretically) serious journalists. Oh well.

I'm very happy though to see the US and UK giving mostly serious reviews!

  2. There's another long German review out by the ZEIT, which is one of the biggest-selling newspapers here. For the people not familiar, it's comparable to the Guardian, leaning a bit on the left side with quite okay and serious journalism (though IMO like most newspapers, declining in quality since the last years, esp in the culture section). Not sure if I should it post it here since it is (surprise surprise) largely negative and they barely talk about the actual songs anyway. It's mostly focused on the clunky lyrics in Killers and her ESC performance again.

It's interesting though like some of the other negative reviews, they just can't help admitting there's something good in there. Calling the album trashy in the headline, but saying that it's at least trash made in the right way. (But then how is it trash??) ...

Oh and they confused songs, talking about M duetting with Maluma on 'I Don't Search I Find'  :chuckle: Speaks boundaries on how much they cared about actually reviewing the album.

  3. Why is Rolling Stones always so shady with the star rating though? Reading that article, it sounds AT LEAST like a 3,5 stars review or more like 4 stars.

Anyways, interesting that they point out Bitch I'm Loca, Crave and Crazy as highlights while they don't seem to be very fond of Killers. Wasn't that one of the songs that the journalists really enjoyed during that listening party? Might be a good sign though - the album catering to a lot of different tastes.

I'll get flack for this, but she doesn't sound good here either. I know it's just a rehearsal, but I sincerely hope she's getting some training for her vocals before the tour starts and doesn't pass off ALL the Eurovision criticism as 'hate'. Much of it was, but there were some solid points raised regarding the maintenance of her vocals or lack thereof...IMO this is a case where going all 'FU' isn't the best response.

  5. I'm wondering when all those videos and clips she shot through January-March are going to be released? There's not been a word on this so far.

Everyone's been talking about that LA drag queen video, but let's not forget there was so much more! The observatory in Lisbon during the Red Moon night, the Portugese villages where she was shooting in a baroque palace and historic church (though I guess some of that could have been used for the Medellin vid), then at the beach with those Batuka ladies....

Plus in the first promo clip that she posted on IG there were all these different clips compiled of Madame X personas - she likely didn't shoot full music videos for each of them, but I also find it unlikely that they shot in all of these different stylings just for a short promo clip.

Don't get me wrong, this is not meant to be a complaint - the Madame X era has been a visual feast so far, so I'm just really intrigued by all these different shoots and what's going to happen with them!

THAT sounds so much better! Now they have to remove all other Eurovision related videos off YouTube and get rid off the evidence.

Was probably supposed to be ironic,  but I hope they won't. It will create even more of a backlash once some press outlets pick up on it (and you know they will, it's Madonna).

Yes! Those are the people who deserve to work with a legend like her.

Meanwhile, M continues to repost pics with Quavo and hashtagging him. Oh well.

  8. Okay, having watched the performance again now, I do think from an artistic point of view, it was brilliant and, dare I say it, one of M's boldest decisions in the last couple of years.

To start with, the stage production (especially the intro of course) was excellent. The spoken Dark Ballet interlude was a moment of performance art only M can pull off. The political message throughout was subtly built in while still quite clear in its delivery...."They think we don't know about their crimes". Add to that ending the performance with "Wake Up" flashing in big white letters on the screen. With the context of what is happening 1 hour away from Tel Aviv, all of that was fucking brave.

Beyoncé gets celebrated for flashing "Feminist" on her screens with little to no achievement behind it to back this up, while M actually decides to call out a country for its political bloodshedding right in the middle of it hosting a contest. Regardless of the expectations I had re/ her performance, that boldness is something I applaud her for and yes, in the vanilla music industry of today (and beyond that) she is pretty much solitary with that attitude.

I do suspect though that M is surrounded by yes people in her team. Like others said, that basic stripped back LAP mix accentuated her vocal weaknesses and at the same time it pretty much killed the momentum of the performance. You can see very well in those audience clips that people were roaring when she was coming on, trying to sing along to the song and dance at first, but with that mix that was barely possible. In effect, even more attention was directed on her vocals. So yeah, by the time Future came on, I believe she had already lost most of the people, regardless of the message.

We heard the rehearsal clips where she was struggling even more. I refuse to believe nobody there was able to realize she was in for a rough ride with this musical arrangement.

I really don't think her vocals were THAT bad during LAP. :dazed: I was more bothered by the tent she was wearing and Quavo's lack of any kind of charisma or enthusiasm.

    This!!

Much more than the vox or the musical arrangement, this Quavo guy (and the decision to bring him on stage in one of M‘s biggest performances) is bothering me massively. Looking bored during the performance, failing to name any M song besides his own and explicitly stating his mum grew up with her music but he DIDN‘T (wtf kind of promotion is that??).

Apart from having zero stage presence, he also clearly has no idea of (and interest in) M‘s actual significance as an icon and artist.

I wish M would stop giving these kind of people so much exposure at her own expense, especially in such important performances like yesterday’s. Maluma was different as he clearly admired and respected M (and brought that across very well), but the Drakes and Quavos of this world clearly don‘t.

So it was controversial? In Israel? GOOD.

So she broke the rules?  That's the M I expect.

So the hell-hole of social media/twitter is crucifying her?  Surprise, surprise.

She she wasn't perfect in the way fans expected and built up for themselves?  You don't say.

So fans aren't happy? What's new.

    Another day in Madonnaland.  :newspaper:

Sorry but this condescending tone towards M's own fans whenever there is criticism voiced is the other side of the extreme. Personally I enjoyed the performance, but expecting solid vocals or at the very least a good musical arrangement is not some unattainable illusion by over-zealous fans.

  11. She was definitely very nervous in the beginning, plus with the focus on the stairs I can understand her voice was shaky during LAP. Which makes me wonder why she wore that eyepatch, doesn't that reduce your eyesight even more?

But nevertheless she put on a great show! Amazing intro especially, and I LOVED the subtle political messages in the end! That's how you do it!
