  1. So excited with these teaser news and can't wait to read the first reviews! I love reading these before actually hearing the songs.

I am more excited about the obscure / slow / mid tempo ones than the disco bangers. I tend to listen to her slower stuff day to day much more. I can't remember last time I listened to hung up for example but listen to time stood still, joan of arc, beautiful killer, secret in fact all bedtime stories album etc. quite regularly.

Why Madonna May Have Last Commercial Laugh Over Eurovision Critics

Madonna – the best-selling female recording artist of all time – may well have the last commercial laugh in 2019. Some critics wrote the star off this weekend after her Eurovision performance, and said that many younger pretenders now have captured her pop crown.

Madonna, who is 60, is known for her spectacular album launches and is on the countdown to her 14th studio collection, Madame X, due out on June 14. After criticism talking of a botched comeback, her loyal fans maintained that she doesn’t have comebacks because she has never been away and is better than ever.

Leave aside altogether Madonna’s decision to perform at the 64th annual Eurovision Song Contest; some critics were simply not impressed by her performance. Martin Belam, writing in The Guardian, said that Madonna’s vocals on her 1989 hit “Like A Prayer” were “pitchy” and her new song “Future,” featuring U.S. rapper Quavo, was lackluster. Belham concluded: “Madonna must be questioning whether it was worth it.”

The star sported a black outfit and X eyepatch during her performance, which was also criticized by some social-media writers who talked of a need for good auto-tuning. A YouTube video has now been released of the show with the BBC saying that some vocals were apparently cleaned up. Madonna, quoting her song “Music,” told the audience that music could make people come together – a remark variously seen at patronizingly obvious and important.

Some viewers were more appreciative, with a typical tweet saying “#Madonna may have sounded flat but she won my heart – being an artist is not always about having a perfect voice, but having something inspiring to say, and knowing how to deliver the message.”

Love her or hate her, Madonna’s income will be boosted by touring. The Madame X Tour currently has some 69 shows running from September this year through to February 2020. This is not on the scale of the Rebel Heart Tour in 2015 and 2016, which had 82 shows and grossed nearly $170 million. This time, the tour will take in theaters rather than large stadiums. This is the first time Madonna has played such venues on a tour since 1985. The income will still be substantial.

“The focus of much of media attention focuses on the release of new music,” Dr Iain Taylor, Lecturer in Music Industries at Birmingham City University in Britain, said in an interview. Particularly with Madonna, he said “much of the fan excitement appears to be much more focused on the accompanying tour. Revenues in current music industries are driven primarily by live music over record sales, and it’s important to remember that Madonna remains one of the top grossing live acts of all time, having grossed more than $1.3 billion in ticket sales over the course of her career.”

Madame X promises to be an ambitious project with Madonna developing her teenage nickname of “Madame X” into a chameleon-like character, who can be anything from a secret agent to nun, whore or a head of state.

The album’s lead single was “Medellín”, a duet with Colombian singer Maluma. The song’s chart performance did not live up to previous outings. It peaked at No. 16 in the US Dance Club Songs chart. This after a run of No. 1 singles on the same dance chart, such as “Living For Love,” “Ghosttown,” and “Bitch I’m Madonna,” all them being songs off the last album, Rebel Heart, from 2015.

Madonna fans will bite back and say nobody compared with their idol, and there is much to celebrate in her stellar career including 300 million records sold worldwide, according to The Guinness Book of Records. She has the most No. 1s on the Billboard charts. Still, it is some years since her singles reached the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100. As the years have gone on, media commentators have dubbed many newer commercial female stars as being “the new Madonna” – from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift.

Iain Taylor pointed out: “Taylor Swift had the top-grossing tour in the States last year, and is not too far from having grossed $1 billion in sales herself over the comparatively short length of her career. With fan spending, and artist income, so dominated by the live music experience, perhaps our attention as commentators shouldn’t really be driven by albums and singles any more, and instead focus more on the tours, performances, and experiences which, ultimately, pay for them.”

The Material Girl’s net worth was recently calculated by Forbes at $590 million, placing her 36 among America’s wealthiest self-made women. Her average gross per tour stop over three years was put at more than $3 million. Given the smaller venues this time, the takings will be lower, though some fans will be prepared to pay premiums to see her in more intimate venues. Madonna has been written off commercially many times before, and she has survived.

Just listen to this poor woman (who represents all of our friends and family who tuned in to see Madonna) listening to the unedited version of LAP. Preferable with headphones.

Then maybe we can all collectively ask ourselves what the fuck is going on with Madonna's voice?

I saw this also - she is the one who said 'it’s the voice of someone who doesn’t sing very much and doesn’t look after their voice'. I am sorry but first and foremost Madonna is a singer. She should have prepared for this better or at least cover it up with a louder choir or something!

Yes, exactly, thank you Baba Kim.

Some fans be like "Who the fuck cares about what the masses think, she is Madonna she has no fucks to give", well here is the important news for you:

Eurovision IS a show for the masses. And Madonna herself made a decision to perform there. And it is self-evident that she wanted to propagate her message to the masses through a (MUSICAL) performance - which unfortunately did not live up to the hype.

I came from a conservative society in the East. More than anyone else on this forum, I perfectly understand how Madonna has never been a vanilla, MOR, family-friendly type of artist in the same fashion as Celine Dion or Whitney Houston so please spare your lecture about how she is not a people's pleaser and "gives no shits", I AM A FAN AND I AM NOT A STRANGER to those facts thank you very much.

The performance did not do her any favours to elevate her status as a singing artist, and please understand the context correctly: 200 million people of friends and families being served with a lifeless form of "Like a Prayer", followed by a spoken interlude and a heavily vocodered song (which I love) with a rapper who has zero stage presence. Did NOT work. You may enjoy the performance as a fan who understands her vision, but do not be condescending to the vast majority who found it lackluster and hence their strong criticism.

    THIS

  5. What was supposed to be an enjoyable event, ruined my weekend really. I'm mentally exhausted and cannot get over it. (Because i care for her before you jump on my throat!)

As some pointed out, it was a mammoth opportunity for her. Everyone, even people who hated the ESC, watched the damn thing for her. I find it mind boggling that she exposed herself like that in front of millions, as if she is bloody Adele!

I really don't know how she's gonna correct this.

I listened to a silly vocal coach commentary on youtube for the performance and she said 'it’s the voice of someone who doesn’t sing very much and doesn’t look after their voice'. Why??? Either do something about it way before the event or take other precautions!

  6. Now that I calmed down, I watched it again.

Her vocals were ok for Madonna except a few flat notes in LAP. (The beginning especially). The problem was the version she chose. It was such a bare version, the whole focus was on her voice which just showed everything. She could have done a joyful version with a choir like in super bowl with a black voice to help and she would have got away with the same vocals. She took a big risk.

I love future and again I don’t think it was the right choice. Being an unknown song, she could have done something more upbeat. It didn’t connect with people at all.

BUT she preferred to take a risk, go all political, give a message and I respect that. I’m sure she knew what she was doing and what kind of shit she was gonna get afterwards. I still love my queen and she means so much to me. What’s next to get excited now? Crave video?

  7. Basically first half of the performance she walked down the steps.

The second half, she walked them up.

I commented on the version of LAP being too dark a few days ago and was shredded by crystalcoffin who now seems to agree with me.

I would have been still happy if she sounded slightly better in LAP. It was just painful to watch for me with friends around.

We’ll find out how it all went from Future’s performance on iTunes and streams I suppose.

On top of all that, the cameraman also fucked it up! Which is not her fault obviously.
