Well I've heard it in full and it's fucking fantastic. :dramatic: So deeply Madonna sounding, well-produced, varied and layered, diverse but with the current of MADONNA throughout. They really paid attention to the sequencing this time because even though there are a lot of sounds going on, it feels like a cohesive work.

Snippets could never do it justice - some songs change so much from minute to minute - God Control morphs into a different song altogether and then merges with the first by the end. Extreme Occident when the drums and tambourine kick in - fabulous. Medellín as we know doesn't even have a chorus until 2:30 in, and Dark Ballet goes nuts.

There were several moments when it all went a different way than I expected. She brought it this time.

My favourite songs upon first listen are God Control, Extreme Occident, and I Don't Search I Find.

All 18 songs are amazing and Ciao Bella is a fantastic closer.  I am effing blown away.  I just am.  Every second of this album is Life.  It makes me feel connected to people in a unique way.  It is simultaneously both classical and modern.  A graceful album that comes back with a mean ass right hook.  I am knocked out and do not want to be revived.  What a journey!

I didn't;t hear any Evita but I guess the closest thing to that is Looking For Mercy

Crave, I Rise, and Crazy are probably the only song from memory that have un-tinkered vocals.

I always love the various reactions and how different they can be.  Some other descriptions that have intrigued me are one ballad being called “creepy and Medeival sounding,” and a reference to another song that “keeps changing sections with multiple parts.”  And the various descriptions I have read of Come Alive are all over the map!

Look at the albums Ray Of Light and Erotica here in the states, hell even The Immaculate Collection, a few of her biggest and best loved only even only made it to #2 on Billboard Albums chart

Exactly, not to mention six classic number two singles on the Hot 100.  Number Two is great!  But so is Number One.  Hell she could be Number 36 as long as the album is amazing and I’ll be ok.

  5. One of my favorite things about the reviews, which I always think is a good sign with albums, is how almost every single track is singled out as a highlight by at least a couple.  For example, the past couple of reviews have been high on Looking For Mercy. Now that is the one song that Variety does not mention, but they single out Batuka which others have ignored.

And for the life of me I can’t figure out what to expect from Come Alive.  I’ll find out in just over nine hours.

  6. These reviews have me so excited as well as the reviews from forum members.  But doesn’t it irk me that virtually every one has a typo or error.  Extreme Occidental?  For fuck’s sake, I meticulously edit the newsletter at my place of work to assure no errors, and these are paid journalists.

I just can't imagine giving reviews so much power that they dictate what I see or how I feel. I couldn't imagine closing myself off to things, or thinking I 'should' like something because of a bunch of opinions from no one I even know. Not to say constructive critique (particularly from those knowledgeable on the subject) isn't a necessary part of the arts, and word of mouth from people you know and trust is another, but putting so much into it that I no longer think for myself, or allow my own curiosity to drive what I want to see/do/hear/experience...is just, bizarre, to me. And I can't understand why so many fall into that. So many great works have never been understood or liked or approved by 'critics'... what a way to miss out. And some of the stuff constantly praised does absolutely nothing for me. Maybe it's because I've never really been a fan of gatekeepers.

Great post although I would apply these same sentiments to the charts.  I love good reviews for Madonna, but they wouldn’t affect my opinion for one second.  American Life and LAP are my faves.  One was acclaimed and one was not.
