    Wonderful post!  We have to be able to defend our personal favorites and still see where they fit within a larger framework.  American Life is also near the top for me, second to Like A Prayer.  Yet I would not maintain that American Life is a career highlight whereas LAP is.

    I believe Madame X will emerge as an objective career highlight AND a personal favorite of mine.

    I've said it for years, but truly, it doesn't matter what she does at this point. Perhaps that's her mentality now too.......zero fucks cuz at the end of the day, why does it matter? They won't rate the music anyways, they just rate their perception of her.

    Perfect post!  I do think she could end up slightly higher than the last three albums if Mojo, Attitude, and PopMatters come through for her.

    But at the end of the day, it’s a masterpiece that the fans are loving, plus many critics as well, and it will stand the test of time.

Killers Who Are Partying is an amazing song, and it’s sad to see the pin head logic when it comes to the lyrics.  These are the same people who probably post pics on their social media saying “I am Pulse” and “Je suis Charlie” and have zero problem with it.  The song is a show of solidarity, and the chorus rebukes any argument that she is trying to BE any of those groups.  People’s idiocy in this day and age is astounding.

  4. I always loved and still love Rebel Heart, which contains some of my all time favorites like Ghosttown, Joan of Arc, Iconic, Holy Water, Inside Out, Wash All Over Me, and Messiah.

    However, there is a momentum with Madame X and a critical response (minus Pitchfork and Uncut) that seems like something special and larger than life, an album in the traditional storytelling sense, and the beginning of what I feel could be her most creative decade to date.

    Just my two cents.

    I used to buy CDs and albums on iTunes but now I have an iTunes monthly membership $10 p/ month and Spotify to stream old stuff and new stuff. 

    Only streaming Madame❌ on both simultaneously at the moment. 

    Same here more or less.  I pay for Spotify and use it almost solely. My cd collection used to be my prized possession.  Now I only buy physical for Madonna, Tori, Garbage, Regina Spektor, reissues of classic albums that I love, and occasionally a newer artist I want to throw a sale towards like First Aid Kit or Janelle Monae.

    Let me first say that I am ecstatic that this album is receiving the reviews that it is. She deserves it. This record is intricate, bold, experimental, and unlike anything else that's out there. It's the reason that she is and ALWAYS will be steps ahead of any pop star - male or female - now and for the foreseeable future. I mean, can anyone see Taylor or Katy or Arianna doing something like this nearly 40 years into their career? I think not. This is an album that MADONNA wanted to make. And she made something truly magical. 

    That being said....

    I'm not personally connecting with this album. I appreciate the journey that she shared with us on Madame X but I just can not hold this albums hands the way I did with her previous releases. Perhaps it's because I absolutely adored Rebel Heart. That entire era was just pure Madonna magic. Sure, the track listing was clunky. Yes, there were leaks. But the promo performances. The tour. The sheer warmth that the album exuded was something special. And I know it's a fools errand to compare previous eras. It's automatic disappointment for any Madonna fan to expect a continuation of an era. And that wasn't my expectation at all. But there's something off about this era that I can't put my finger on. 

    It's still so heartwarming to see the excitement here. Regardless of my personal feelings, to be a part of of new era on this forum is always pure joy. And I certainly won't be a member to piss on anyone's love for this album, because it really is something to behold and doesn't deserve it. Years from now -  as with American Life and Tori Amos's Strange Little Girls - I may come back to this album and it very well could speak to me in different ways that it's simply not doing now. That's the beauty of her music. No other pop star has the complexity in their work like she does. It's what I keep coming back for.

    Wow.  I am surprised!  Your review was one that I was looking forward to most.  I hope the album grows on you.  Respectfully and eloquently written, as your posts always are.

    We all have our favorites, but like it or not, a consensus forms regarding an artist’s body of work.  You can look at the multiple “ranking Madonna albums” articles that have come out over the past few years since Rebel Heart, and almost all of them have HC and MDNA near the bottom, with Rebel slightly higher but still mid to low range.  It already feels like Madame X is going to be one that is considered among her best, and yes, the test of time might prove me wrong.  But there is a feeling that this is a return to form critically.  Obviously there is big excitement every time she releases an album, which you can’t say about many artists these days.

    Personally I do not feel like she has any bad albums, but she has albums that are less extraordinary than others.  Madame X I predict will be considered among her greatest.

    I think Rebel Heart contains some of the best songs of her career, but it flows more like a fabulous mix or playlist than a proper album in my opinion.

    MDNA has the worst vocal production of her career and some of her weakest songs, but is redeemed by the final stretch and that amazing cover.

    Hard Candy is wall to wall jams with some drama in the final two tracks.

    Madame X feels like something special, an album that will stand alongside her very best.

No one did the creation of an album and the crafting of a complete body of work better than Madonna but that started to slip a little with Hard Candy, there were elements of it but it was mostly a collection of good pop songs. 

    MDNA though I feel it is underrated as a collection was the nadir of this aspect of her talent because other than the late second half of the record, it was literally a handful of dance tracks that she sang over and sounded a little detached from.

    RH is a curious one because there are several stories to be told but it's uneven and uncohesive. That said, the stories on offer are deeply compelling and with more streamlined production, a more careful eye over what made the final tracklisting and no leaks hindering her ultimate vision, it could have ranked among her top tier works. I think the difference between MDNA and RH is that she had something to say.

    Madame X is a revelation because she has once again, recorded a great novel so to speak. This ranks alongside erotica, bedtime stories, ray of light and confessions because it is a body of work, a statement and it's uncompromised. In short, it's a true Madonna ALBUM.
