    Madonna: MDNA (Interscope)

Forget the four "Deluxe" extras, not one of which except maybe the pretty little "I F***ed Up" improves on the updated '90s arena-dance power tracks of the first 43 minutes, although they top the deadly-dreamy closer "Falling Free" as well as the penultimate "Masterpiece," which begins "If you were the Mona Lisa . . . ." Granted, I could mock "Ooh la la you're my superstar/Ooh la la that's what you are" just as easily. But lyrics have never been where she showed off her gorgeous brains, and anyway, the 10-track mix I propose as an alternative goes out on a real song called "Love Spent": "Hold me like your money/Tell me that you want me/Spend your love on me/Spend your love on me." Nikki Minaj shines bright, but she's no more crucial structurally than the cheerleaders who garnish "I'm Addicted" at its close and embellish "Give Me All Your Luvin'" throughout. Play loud. She's smart and she's proud. A MINUS

the last time she got an a was on music.

  2. i'm gonna die. the album is now a 65 on metacritic! wtf, its no hard candy! they simply refuse to add in those good reviews. what assholes. also monsters are flooding the user reviews too. we need to do something about it! :americanlife:

  3. Probably not, but it would be better to inform them on a lot of missing reviews. I asked to replace the *cough*review*cough" of the telegraph with the ACTUAL review though. I do hope they change that. Its only fair.

there were 2 reviews? the one on metacritic now isn't official?

  4. MDNA Review

After several days of listening to MDNA, and only MDNA, I've finally gotten off fawning over it and giving a more concrete review of this album. In essence, the queen proves that she will be there through the endless years to show us how pop should really be done.

    1) Girl Gone Wild

This is easily the most generic song on the album, but fret not, for this song is absolutely unrepresentative of this album. The starting of this song, where she confesses to god, signals that bitchdonna is back to kick some asses. In the music video, she truly is a girl gone wild, working the chains, and the guys of course, much like she did back in the early 90s. Certain little monsters who are either severely lacking in pop culture knowledge or are just pure stubborn claim that this video is a rip off of Mother Monster's Alejandro. When you actually do some homework on Youtube, or if you are an older monster, simply just by living through the 80s and early 90s, you should know that Alejandro is a rip off of multiple Madonna videos, including Express Yourself, Vogue, Justify My Love, Erotica and Human Nature. What Madonna "ripped off" Lady Gaga is what Lady Gaga ripped off Madonna. In other words, Madonna is referencing her earlier works. Now hide in your eggshell, squeeze back into your Mother Monster's slimy pussy and reflect upon your sins.

    Rating: 4.5/5

    2) Gang Bang

Probably the most eccentric song on the album, and possibly ranks as one of her best songs ever. The seemingly cowboy-like beats coupled with her vocals which gets fiercer by the verse, is refreshing and exhilirating, especially after the dubstep breakdown and the final chorus, where she seems to be having so much fun killing people. If I have to join her in hell, I would certainly do so.

    Rating: 5/5

    3) I'm Addicted

This song is sort of psychedelic, just as the title suggested. It's catchy, but certainly not generic. Thus, it's quite a surprise that Benny Benassi could produce this song, though I do think that The Demolition Crew probably is the mastermind. The defining point comes when Madonna solemnly declares that she needs to dance, before the dubstep drops in and she sucks us into her addictive world, chanting "M-D-M-A, M-D-N-A...". If the chant didn't get stuck in your mind, you probably have no soul.

    Rating: 5/5

    4) Turn Up The Radio

Yet another "Hello" soundalike. But when sang by Madonna, it instantly becomes much more energetic than any of his previous works. Also, do not think Madonna simply took the song and sang it. She's definetely added her touch to the lyrics, as can be seen from certainly cheesy rhymes, such as "moth to a flame" and "playing this game".

    Rating: 5/5

    5) Give Me All Your Luvin'

The weakest song of the entire standard edition. In this song, Madonna demands all our luvin'. If this song (or the Superbowl performance) doesn't convince you, this album should do otherwise.

    Rating: 4/5

    6) Some Girls

Hard to think this would be an Orbit produced song. There's nothing really special this song, other than consisting of so much vocal distortion.

    Rating: 4.5/5

    7) Superstar

This song is sweet and catchy. If you don't think much of this song on the first try, you should repeat this song several times, for it's a grower. The scene that comes to my mind is Madonna strutting down a street before settling down on a bench in the park swaying and singing "ooh la la, you're my superstar" while twirling her hair. I would describe this as her new True Blue (the song). It really could put a smile on your face. However, I really couldn't figure out which part her daughter, Lourdes, sang on the song.

    Rating: 5/5

    8) I Don't Give A

Quite a radical twist to the album, having a slight hip hop feel. Nicki Minaj easily fits into the song, as she steps back into her comfort zone and does what she does best. If there's any collaboration that Madonna has done best, it would be this. The lyrics, is of course another highlight of the song. Throughout the song she sings about how she doesn't a (fuck) about her life, while near the end, Nicki Minaj proclaims "that there's only one queen, and that's Madonna." How right. It's a heinous slap in the face of any pretenders to throne and whoever thought she was going to be a coy lamb about the clown show that's been going on for 3 years. The word "reductive" was a sign of what's to come.

    Rating: 5/5

    9) I'm A Sinner

This song is reminiscent of 'Beautiful Stranger'. It's not exactly as catchy as the previous songs, and I don't really have much thoughts on this song except for it being simply, quite nice. That's all, now let's get on with the album.

    Rating: 4/5

    10) Love Spent

Another amazing song. My second favourite from this album. It starts off with a banjo, before turning out to be a more serious song. My favourite part though, comes after the next banjo special, where the ambience changed all of a sudden, and she burst into another chorus, which seemed to have so much more emotions, as if her life depended on it. On a sidenote, the accoustic version of this song is worth listening too.

    Rating: 5/5

    11) Masterpiece

The Golden Globe winning song. The song which "doesn't stand a fucking chance" Fortunately, this track doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Masterpiece was also the first sign that Madonna's "better" vocals are back. It acts as a great lead out to the next song too.

    Rating: 5/5

    12) Falling Free

Is she trying to recreate 'Mer Girl'? It's been so long since we've heard her sing with such bare melody. Just because it's one of the few times Madonna does this, it's worth listening.

    Rating: 5/5

    13) Beautiful Killer

Yet another song that reminds me of 'Beautiful Stranger'. I feel compelled to sing "I'm gonna wake up yes and no" (Die Another Day) against the first line though. It has that huge sense of familiarity on so many levels and is the best song on the deluxe part of the album, along with the next track.

    Rating: 5/5

    14) I Fucked Up

In this song, Madonna (surprisingly) admits she did make mistakes during her marriage with Guy Ritchie. It's a beautiful ballad, and like several other songs on the album, halfway through this song, the entire mood changed into something more light and cheerful, as she thought of the happily ever after she could have if she didn't fuck up. This is without doubt, the most personal song on the album, and only William Orbit can squeeze it out of her.

    Rating: 5/5

    15) B-Day Song

This song has an indie feel to it. It's simple and the vocals tend to be a little retro. M.I.A. easily blends into the song, as it should have been since it's so light and catchy. What would have been a stupid song turns out surprisingly delightful.

    Rating: 4.5/5

    16) Best Friend

In my opinion, Best Friend is the worst track on the album. This song sounds like it came from Hard Candy. Not to be mistaken though, it's still manageable as a bonus track.

    Rating: 3.5/5

    17) Give Me All Your Luvin' (Party Rock Remix)

Nothing much to comment on this. I'm never really interested in remixes anyway.

    Rating: 3.5/5

In her 4 years of absence, many have been eyeing the throne, but with MDNA, Madonna shows she's not about to give up the throne. Begging for it wouldn't get you anywhere either. This album will definetely rank up there with one of her best. She is still capable of creating a new peaks in her career, and anyone who speaks of her old age as a hindrance in their review is jealous, sexist and ageist. If you missed out her last pop revolution (Confessions On A Dance Floor), then listen to this album now.

    MDNA (Standard Edition): 57/12 = 4.75

    MDNA (Deluxe Edition): 78.5/17 = 4.62

    Madonna : MDNA (Review)

    http://www.hit-channel.com/music/reviews/pop-album/item/6521#.T2SzFO6rjBs.twitter

    Girl Gone Wild

It's So Hypnotic / It's So Erotic / Desire / Fire / Hey Hey Hey A Good Girl Gone Wild / But I'm A Bad Girl Anyway"

    Gang Bang

"Bitch Out Of Order / Bat Out Of Hell / Fish Out Of Water / I'm Scared, Can't You Tell? / Bang Bang Shoot You Dead"

    I'm Addicted

Το τραγούδι είναι το αποτέλεσμα της συνεργασίας με THE DEMOLITION CREW και αποτελεί το πιο πειραματικό τραγούδι του άλμπουμ: "Feels Like A Drug / And I Can't Get Enough / And It Fits Lke A Glove / I'm Addicted To Your Love" σε παρασέρνει σε μια δίνη ηλεκτρονικών ήχων.. like like!

    Turn Up the Radio

"You Ask Me Where I Wanna Go / We Gotta Turn Up The Radio / There's Something You Don't Need To Know / They Set Me Down On The Radio"

Give Me All Your Luvin' - featuring Nicki Minaj & M.I.A.

    Some Girls

Όπως και το "Gang Bang", κινήτε παράλληλα με το "Confessions On A Dancefloor" και το "Hard Candy" ταιριάζει τέλεια στο άλμπουμ και σας φέρνει στην ευχάριστη θέση να χορέψετε ακόμα και αν δεν θέλετε...

"You Made Me A Promise / To Make Me A Star / You Made A Promise / I'd Get To The Top / Some Gilrs Always Get What They Wanna / All I Seem To Get Is The Other This Won't Last For Long / Not Forever / And The Champagne Makes It Taste So Much Better"

    Superstar

You're My Gangster / You're Like Al Capone / You're Like Caesar Stepping On To The Throne / You're Abe Lincoln Coz You're Fight For What's Right / You're My Angel Bringing Peace To My Life / Uh LaLa You're My Superstar / Uh LaLa Love The Way That You Are"

    I Don't Give A... - featuring Nicki Minaj

" There’s only one Queen, and that’s Madonna, Bitch!"Το τραγούδι, αποτελεί το πιο σίγουρο δρόμο για την Αμερικάνικη αγορά!

"Wake Up / This Is Your Life / Children On Your Own / Gotta Plan On The Phone / Meet The Press / Buy A Dress / Do All This To Impress"

    I'm A Sinner

    Love Spent

Don't Try To Take Me / Like You Took Your Money / Take Me In Your Arms / Until Your Last Breath / I Want You To Hold Me / Like You Hold Your Money / Yeah I'm Love Spent / Wondering Where The Love Went"

    Masterpiece

    Falling Free

"We're Both Free. Free To Go"

Κάπου εδώ ολοκληρώνεται η stadard version του "MDNA". Αλλά συνεχίζουμε και με τα bonus track της DeLuxe Edition.

    Beautiful Killer

    I Fucked Up

    B-Day Song - featuring M.I.A.

Με αυτό το τραγούδι καθίσταται σαφές ότι ο Bonus Disc της Deluxe Edition του "MDNA" σίγουρα δεν θεωρείται ως filler ή σαν μια στρατηγική μάρκετινγκ για να πουλήσει μερικά περισσότερα αντίτυπα.Η συνεργασία με τη M.I.A είναι ίσως το πιο αντισυμβατικό κομμάτι του δίσκου,ένα αστείο κομμάτι σχεδόν παιδικό...Θα μπορούσε να κάνει ζευγάρι με το "Gimme All Your Lovin" , όσο αφορά την απλότητα...

    Best Friend

Τελευταίο bonus του δίσκου είναι το Party Rock remix του Give Me All Your Luvin’ (Featuring LMFAO).

Εν κατακλείδι: “There’s only one Queen, and that’s Madonna, Bitch!” (Nicki Minaj – I Don’t Give A).

  6. Track-by-track review of Madonna's MDNA

    http://www.thenational.ae/arts-culture/music/track-by-track-review-of-madonnas-mdna

    1. Girl Gone Wild: Benny Benassi-produced electro-pop thumper that gets better the more (and louder) you play it.

    2. Gang Bang: Throbbing electronic romp on which Madonna plays a wronged woman out for revenge: “Bang bang, shot you dead!”

    3. I'm Addicted: Catchy club tune that’s like a post-Guetta take on her mid-Noughties work Confessions on a Dance Floor.

    4. Turn Up the Radio: Infectious paean to escapism that recalls her 2006 hit Get Together. This should have been MDNA’s lead single.

    5. Give Me All Your Luvin’ feat. Nicki Minaj & M.I.A: The actual lead single, as performed at the Super Bowl, is a lighter pop morsel than most on the album.

    6. Some Girls: “I’d never wanna be like some girls,” Madonna sings on this vocodered electro tune that’s as sinewy as her gym-toned arms.

    7. Superstar: On which she compares her new boyfriend to Marlon Brando, James Dean, Bruce Lee and, erm, Abe Lincoln.

    8. I Don’t Give A: Guy Ritchie should skip this mid-tempo electro track, which references his failed marriage to Madonna in unflattering terms.

    9. I’m a Sinner: Co-produced by William Orbit, this recalls three of their previous hook-ups: Ray of Light, Beautiful Stranger and Amazing.

    10. Love Spent: This banjo-flecked banger features a fabulous middle 8.

    11. Masterpiece: Golden Globe winner from the soundtrack to the film W.E. Would slot neatly onto Something to Remember.

    12. Falling Free: This cascading, string-swathed ballad is the loveliest thing Madonna’s sung in almost a decade.

    13. Beautiful Killer: One of four bonus tracks is decent rather than dazzling. Nice Papa Don’t Preach strings though.

    14. I F***** Up: Madonna’s remorseful on this mid-tempo confessional, which recalls her 2003 album American Life.

    15. B-day Song feat M.I.A: A fun throwaway that could soundtrack a nightclub scene from an Austin Powers movie.

    16. Best Friend: MDNA ends on an affecting note, as Madonna mourns a relationship: “I feel like I lost my very best friend.”

    17. Give Me All Your Luvin’ (Party Rock Remix): MDNA’s first single is remixed into a club banger.

Madonna chose to announce her 2012 world tour immediately after her head-turning performance at the Super Bowl in February. Watched by 114 million TV viewers in the US - and millions more around the world - her half-time pop medley was a formidable statement of intent from the indefatigable 53-year-old.

Her 12-minute appearance featured an eclectic and energetic mix of performers, from Greek warriors, Cirque du Soleil acrobats and a gospel choir, to a high school marching band and cameos from Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A and LMFAO. Oh, and there was Madonna as well, who sung five pop classics and her new single Give Me All Your Luvin'.

Little wonder there has since been such demand for her first live shows in the Gulf. But what can ticket-holders expect to get for their money when she arrives in Abu Dhabi?

Thankfully, these days, Madonna is willing to sing almost all of her classic hits. During 2001's Drowned World tour - which was, at the time, her first live outing in eight years - she attracted criticism for overlooking her older and more popular songs. Just one song from The Immaculate Collection, a 1990 singles compilation widely considered to contain the crown jewels of Madonna's back catalogue, appeared on that tour's set list.

Madonna would later manage to overcome her aversion to her past hits for the Re-Invention tour in 2004. American Life, the album she was promoting at the time, had received a cool reception from both fans and critics so she peppered her live set with her most famous songs: Vogue, Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Into the Groove and Material Girl.

She continued to blend the old and the new on her two most recent expeditions, 2006's Confessions tour and 2008's Sticky & Sweet tour. However, when an artist has more than 70 hit singles to pick from - spanning three decades of chart success - someone's favourite song will always be left out. True Blue, a number one in 1986, hasn't been performed live since the year after it was released.

But anyone arriving at Yas Arena expecting a nostalgia-soaked trip down memory lane might be in for a shock. Madonna loves to give her familiar hits a contemporary twist - as she showed at the Super Bowl, where she reworked 2000's Music to include elements of Party Rock Anthem and Sexy and I Know It, both recent chart-toppers from US pop-rap duo LMFAO.

Of course, she also has a new album to promote, and MDNA doesn't sound like the work of a veteran artist who's ready to rest on her past successes. Even the LP's title, MDNA, is wilfully challenging.

Taken at face value, MDNA works as a simple and snappy abbreviation of the star's name. It could also be construed as conveying the very essence of Madonna - if the singer is "M", then this record represents her musical "DNA".

But the controversy stems from its intentional resemblance to the chemical name for the banned drug "Ecstasy" or MDMA. Lucy Dawe, a spokesperson for the anti-drug campaign group Cannabis Skunk Sense, called the title "an ill-advised decision".

When asked about the matter, Madonna told the BBC that she just "liked the play on words. It's a triple entendre".

Ecstasy is, of course, often associated with the electronic dance music scene and there's quite a lot of that genre on MDNA. Madonna's chosen collaborators here are all notable names from the world of club pop.

She co-produces two songs with Italian DJ Marco "Benny" Benassi. The French electronic whiz Martin Solveig joins her for three tracks. And there are six new works with William Orbit, the British musician with whom she worked on her 1998 masterpiece Ray of Light. The results aren't as cutting edge as Madonna has often been in the past, but they're certainly contemporary. MDNA features plenty of hard-edged electro-pop songs embellished with up-to-the-minute production flourishes, including rap cameos and dubstep breakdowns.

One such moment occurs on the album's opening track. "You got me in the zone, DJ play my favourite song," Madonna trills on Girl GoneWild, borrowing a line apiece from Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez. It's disappointing stuff, especially from a woman who recently criticised Lady Gaga's Born This Way single for being "reductive".

Elsewhere, Madonna attempts to set a new record for the greatest number of lyrical clichés a pop singer can squeeze onto an album. When she's not "a fish out of water", she's "a bat out of hell", or "a moth to a flame", or "a thief in the night".

But alongside these familiar images, MDNA also features some remarkably personal moments. Madonna's ex-husband Guy Ritchie should probably skip over I Don't Give A, on which she finds inspiration from their failed marriage. "I tried to be a good girl, I tried to be your wife, I diminished myself, and swallowed my light," she sings, before declaring: "And if I was a failure, I don't give a ..."

Yet elsewhere on the record, Madonna seems remorseful. IF***** Up is a frank break-up song on which the singer shows her vulnerable side.

"I blamed you when things didn't go my way, somehow I've destroyed the perfect dream," she admits here, presumably addressing her ex-husband.

Moments like this will certainly provide grist for the gossip mill. But MDNA also succeeds on a more intuitive level. Tracks like Turn Up the Radio, I'm Addicted, Superstar and Love Spent prove Madonna is still a peerless purveyor of pop thrills.

Then there's the album's most jaw-dropping moment, a preposterous piece of pop called Gang Bang. Over an electronic throb flecked with gangster film sound effects (guns, sirens, getaway cars), Madonna plays a wronged woman seeking revenge. Her parting shot? "If you're gonna act like a b****, then you're gonna die like a b****." Just imagine how she'll translate this tune to the Yas Arena stage.

  7. Can I ask a question to members from the US? Apparently this ghastly boy band called One Direction we sent over from the UK is currently huge in the US. I think their album released in the US this week. There are rumours, they are so huge, MDNA can never top their album in 2 weeks time, any truth in this? I can't believe it, cause they are proper shite!!!

just look at their discography, the only song's they have planted on billboard hot 100 peaks at 28. the album didnt even top the chart in uk, and it only sold 800k worldwide, including 500k in uk. there's no way it will be "so huge" that they will be able to topple mdna, or even be able to beat adele to no.2 next week. if there's one direction they are going, it has to be straight to hell.

  8. For the most part, Madonna's albums generally receive favorable reviews. I can't recall anything (other than American Life) that left some of them feeling mixed.

in fact, i think as far as pop artistes are concerned, madonna's like one of the very few that consistently have favourable reviews for her albums. and as for the mainstream pop artists from the past decade, madonna's probably the only one that can get 80 on metacritic.

  9. i think it will leak next week. i hope it doesn't leak though. we've waited nearly 4 years, 1 more week of waiting wouldn't kill. but i will occassionally think 'what if i die in a freak accident tomorrow, i can't even hear mdna before i die.'
