Which is pretty meaningless because the biggest opening so far this year has been 166,000 for the Eminem album that was hugely hyped. If M does do X Factor as rumoured, and with Christmas approaching, 'Celebration''s biggest one-week sales are still to come. But I guess because they wouldn't be as high as 200,000 you'd call that a 'flop'.
Promotion will be the KEY to its success.
TIC was number 1 for 9 weeks, it was the biggest selling album of 1990 and the seventh biggest selling album of 1991.

Well it didn't exactly get off to a GOOD START
First week sales for other albums:
217.000 COADF 2005 1
152.000 Music 2000 1
95.000 Hard Candy 2008 1
88.000 GHV2 2001 2
77.000 Celebration 2009 1
65.000 American Life 2003 1
In fact Music and COADF did more than Celebration's first week sales, in week 2.

Number 1 is good but as American Life and Hard Candy proved, it means NOTHING in terms of sales - the real test for Celebration is whether it can SUSTAIN its sales or PLUMMET like the aforementioned.

I thought copyright was at least 70 years, so that scenario would require 50 years from now. (And sometimes "life of the author" is mentioned in copyright law. Not sure if that only applies to written works, or if it also extends to musical compositions, in which case it would be 70 years after Madonna's death. But, more than likely, it would be the end of the year 2059 when "Like a Prayer" moves into the public domain. Barring any successful legal measures taken to extend the copyright protection -- which could happen, as well... I think there's something on the books now about a one-time extension to the timeframe, but I'm not sure.)
Don't know for sure but I read that EMI finally decided to release the Beatles remastered CDs because they would soon be out of copyright and anyone could exploit them.
-
I wonder if they'll have the ad in heavy rotation tonight and over the weekend. I've so far only seen it once, during Sunday's X Factor but I tend to surf channels during ad breaks.
-
I don't think promotion is that important at the moment - remember she didn't do promotion for Music until November/December and that did massive sales on the back of it. The key thing is whether they have a campaign lined up for Celebration.
-
I'm sure we'll get a remaster of Like A Prayer 30 years from now - when it's out of copyright and neither she nor Warners can do anything about it
-
Is Matthew Todd still editor?
Don't know - the last time I flicked through Attitude was when she included them in the COAD promo.
I used to like looking at the nice pics of Philip Olivier from it on famousmales until they banned them
-
^Hasn't that already been done?
-
I'm sure we can be quietly confident of 5/5 from Attitude
-
Working with Paul Oakenfold shows Madonna's willingness to try something new and still keep her signature sound
-
Anyone know if Q, NME, Uncut or the broadsheets (Observer, Guardian etc) have published reviews yet? RESPECTED publications rather than a 6/6 from Norway?

6th #1 album before the decade ends
What am I missing?
Music
American Life
Confessions On A Dancefloor
Hard Candy
Celebration

I must say that I'm more than a little surprised that someone at management didn't take a couple of hourse to sit down and proof the copy and listen to the CD. I imagine the shit will hit the fan over this, or it should at least; I would be seriously fucked off if I was Guy O.
Bring back Freddy DeMann - this lack of quality control never would have happened under his watch.
-
u dont buy anything Madonna do u anymore?
For the first time ever with Miles Away, I didn't buy a Madonna single but I was confident this would change with the lead single from her GH - it didn't. What's more, I haven't even downloaded Revolver or It's So Cool - it's just not worth bothering anymore given how shit she's become.
-
Will CD1 chart separately?
Those sales aren't that bad all things considered - there's been zilch promo and it's an odd time of year to release a GH. When you consider Ultimate Flop only managed around 70k first week sales after a MASSIVE promotional campaign prior to its release with Kylie appearing on loads of TV shows, performing tracks from her back catalogue. The big opportunity will be in the coming weeks and she'll only capitalize on that if she does some major promo - CIN, X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing. I guess the massive star Jonathan Ross alluded to having on his show in September was Wacko afterall.
-
If she is doing x factor they won't announce it until after the boot camp stage of the show.
RUBBISH - they've even given the date that Robbie is appearing on it.
-
Well I'm not buying it - I'll wait until a few years time when they want to bring about a revival and put out something worth having.
I just hope the DVD isn't fucked up as I do want that.
-
Given that X Factor live shows even don't start for another month, it's a bit early to say she won't be doing it. Christ, you really are a broken record. Seriously, what pleasure do you gain from just being constantly negative for the sake of it?
A bit like Madonna's ability to come up with decent musical output then - she can't even exploit her back catalogue properly.
*FLUSH*
-
Not exactly setting the charts alight but given the lack of promo who would have expected it to.
I'm beginning to think the few interviews are all she'll do for this - rumours of X Factor were obviously wishful thinking.
There's NO WAY she'll do the EMAs - not with Lady Ga Ga planning to perform.

almost 40 Top 10 UK and US chart smashes
I wish they wouldn't tie in her UK chart run with the US one which ended long before things turned stale in the UK.
-
Thanks Mattress - I was going to pick up the double CD but given the SHODDINESS of the compilation I'll just download the essential tracks. Even in the new phase of her career as a heritage act Madonna's product is MESSY to say the least.

Oct 2000 - #2 - Light Years
They held that back a week in the hope it would knock Music off the top spot - Music's second week sales were more than double of the first week sales of Light Years

10 #1
Westlife
7 #1
Eminem
McFly
6 #1
Sugababes
5 #1
Madonna
In terms of overall sales she's the sixth biggest selling number 1 act of the decade with combined sales of 2 million; Westlife are number 1 with 3.5 million sales. Despite the La La song, poor brave sick Kylie couldn't even make the top 10 with Atomic Kitten, S Club 7 and Britney Spears all selling more than her.
A REAL CELEBRATION!!! - Madonna equals Elvis Presley with 11 top-selling albums in Britain!!!!

REALISTIC, not negative.
