  1. But it was risky for her because she had become known for doing ballads for quite a few years prior to the release of ROL...and the few tracks she had released that weren't necessarily a ballad had not fared well on the charts (Human Nature, Bedtime Story). I think that was the point he was trying to make.

true, she had had quite a string of ballads prior to that (which, i must say, i absolutely long for given the current epic-ballad-drought of recent years), but nonetheless i still think she was always thought of as a "dance" artist, so that would make ROL even more expected because of the length of time since she had released a dance single...

  2. The release was timed perfectly - Frozen for the winter, ROL for the summer

But I think her comeback would have been a bigger shock to people if ROL was first. That single sounds sooo unlike the Madonna of before. She apparently wanted it first, but Warners thought it was too risky and went with the safer Frozen, which is akin to a 90s Live To Tell.

Huh? i don't see in any way how ROL is a riskier single choice than frozen. although the song is different than her dance songs of the past, to me it sounds like the most "mainstream" song on the album (not that there's anything wrong with that).

  3. Frozen was the perfect first single for ROL. I remember when the video launched, it was all over TV. People expected her "come back" single to be a big pop number, but it was so somber and no one had ever seen her all gothed out like that. It was the perfect way to re-launch herself. She really gave us something she hadn't done before.

    well said, totally agree!

  4. I don't hate the AL single, I just wasn't an immediate fan of it like I am so much of her stuff. And I didn't have a big problem with the rap, either...I think Madonna was trying to be funny and tongue-in-cheek and it got misconstrued...people took it WAAAAAY too seriously.

agreed, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too seriously. I have loved American Life from the first time i heard the song on the radio, and still do...i thought it was a really cool progression in sound from her work with mirwais on 'music'...

  5. What an insult to call Stuart the Oakenfold of the 00s.:manson: Take a look at his work with Madge apart from "Confessions" -- need we be reminded that he remixed THREE of her tours and has pretty much shown us he's capable of a MULTITUDE of different sounds? I think most collaborators simply slot him into the dance material because that's the one they prefer, nothing more.

And even IF we are going off "Confessions" alone, that's enough for me. Best Madge album this decade. END OF.

my point was simply that i don't think his music will age as well as mirwais'...'sorry' ten years from now is not gonna sound so classic, compared to something like 'music' twenty years from now...that is all

  6. given that this album is a celebration of her legacy, it would've been nice if she'd put the effort into making just ONE more iconic video (even if the song sounds horribly dated). to me, madonna's artistic status really dropped when she stopped making real music videos, because that was such a big part of what set her apart from so many others. it was one giant step toward cher-land: contributing nothing more than cheesy, yet enjoyable, dance-fluff for the gays...

  7. IMO stuart price is the paul okenfold of the 00's, and Mirwais is the most original, edgiest producer (and my favorite) that she's ever worked with. every bleep, every stutter and every twinge is well thought out and contributes to the song. i've gotten so sick of 'music' because of all the tour performances, but when i listened to the album version the other day i totally fell in love with it again. the sharp electronic production is what makes that song a timeless classic. though i really did enjoy confessions, i can't see any of those songs aging the way mirwais' best will, except maybe hung up, and that's because it's built on a giorgio moroder beat with an abba sample...music,impressive instant, paradise, die another day, nobody knows me, future lovers, this is the most impressive list of madonna songs i can imagine from any one producer (clearly i'm most fond of his purely electronic work than his acoustic stuff)

  8. 'Erotica' is next to 'Justify My Love'!?:clap::clap:

I wish she would have spread them out to not water down their individual fabulousness by putting them next to each other, given there similar theme...

overall, i think it's a great tracklist, but very lop-sided. as much as i love that she put in so many of the 80s classics that deserve greater recognition, i think she sorely neglected erotica...to not include deeper and deeper is tragic, and rain is one of her biggest hits in the u.s., and otherwise one of her best ballads

  9. i can't stand the gaga, but i will give her some points for creativity in terms of the way she presents herself and her music from a visual perspective. the music itself, however, is pure generic drivel, with her first three singles being derivatives of the same pop fluff. so when she gets all up herself about being so unique and artistic musically, i can't help but want to see her suffer a great deal of physical pain...

  10. I love how nobody considers Madonna could have pulled the original AL video out of genuine respect for the troops. I mean that was real people fighting and dying down there, she probably felt it was inappropriate to release a pop video that was glamorizing and making fun of that.

i really don't see how she was glamorizing or making fun of that at all in the video....quite the opposite actually

  11. You know, it is *possible* that she really did pull the video in the US out of respect for the soldiers. Its pretty obvious she would know/did know, after 20 years in the business, that not having a video for your album lead-off single would damage the commercial potential of that album, yet she pulled the AL clip anyway.

uh ok, personally i don't see anything remotely disrespectful towards the soldiers in that video though...
