No, I don't think it's accurate to say that, because Madonna's overheads/costs are usually higher than most other artists' (e.g. her own personal performance fee would be significantly higher than just about anyone else out there - after all, she's Madonna, and she's peerless amongst solo artists in terms of career longevity and ability to draw a crowd). She has a huge touring entourage and her productions are generally very elaborate, so it would cost a fortune to keep everything running.

    Look at it this way - let's say Madonna's own personal appearance fee is $2.5m per show. Keeping things ridiculously simple (just to illustrate a point), if she charges $380 a ticket, she has to sell 6579 tickets to generate enough revenue to cover her personal income. Let's say Taylor Swift's personal appearance fee is $1m. If she charges $250 a ticket, she only has to sell 4000 tickets to generate enough revenue to cover her own income. These figures don't take into account venue costs, advertising, Live Nation's costs and income etc. etc.

    Of course, if Madonna and Taylor Swift had the same appearance fee, then yes, it could be argued that because of Madonna's higher ticket prices, she could have a lower sell out tally than Taylor.

  2. In the UK, Madonna's singles were released in the following order:

    Everybody

    Lucky Star (re-promoted after the success of Holiday)

    Holiday

    Borderline (re-promoted in early 1986)

    In the US, the order was as follows:

    Everybody

    Burning Up

    Holiday

    Borderline

    Lucky Star

    In Australia, the order was as follows:

    Burning Up

    Holiday

    Borderline

    Lucky Star

    New Zealand had the same order as Australia, with the addition of Everybody (before Burning Up).

    The reason why Lucky Star precedes Borderline on TIC is because LS saw a single release in a major territory (the UK) before Borderline (even though the LS video wasn't filmed until immediately after the Borderline one).

  3. in the US this is how it played out.

    in 1982 Everybody was released. it was a club hit. the video was played nowhere (maybe a few NY clubs).

    in mid 1983 Burning Up is released as a double A side with Physical Attraction. PA actually more of a club hit, Burning Up video had minor club play but not on MTV.

    Holiday was released in the final quarter of '83 because of Jellybean and the DJ's loyalty to their own. it became her first cross-over Billboard Hot 100 hit.

    while in the UK promoting Holiday and her first album, she discusses that she will fly back to Los Angeles to shoot the video for Borderline - in which she plays a "Lolita-like character".

    while in LA, she shoots Borderline and Lucky Star a few weeks apart. Sire/Warner believes Borderline is good for US radio and MTV and sends Lucky Star to club DJ's in the UK. shes still struggling in that market.

    Borderline single is released in the US. she get her first top 10. the 12" has both Borderline and Lucky Star remixes.

    Madonna becomes big on MTV with Borderline - her first Top 10. she goes into the studio with Nile Rogers to work on her follow up - Like a Virgin. they complete production around April. she cant wait to get it out. but Borderline is STILL lingering and shes praying for it to go away so can unleash Virgin to the world.

    because the album is SELLING and doing so well and Madonna is becoming so big, Sire/Warner decide to release Lucky Star as a proper single and the video is already shot. they send song to radio and video to MTV.

    Lucky Star is the song of that summer. her first Top 5. because she is so big now, they start playing Burning Up on the radio and Everybody. MTV will play the BU video but never Everybody! local video shows would play both. like MV3 here in Los Angeles.

    this delays the release of Virgin and madonna is not happy.

    she is nominated for Best New Artist for Borderline at the first MTV music awards. they expected her to sing the song she is nominated for. she does Like a Virgin two months before the record release.

    Madonna become a global superstar. and while the UK virtually ignored her first stuff, she is so big now, they RERELEASE the first album over there with that very title and new artwork. Madonna: The First Album.

    all the songs that had their day in 83/84 now reemerge on the UK charts in 85.

  4. I think people are getting a tad carried away with some of these predictions! Lol

    Yes the Australian, Asian, Mexican and other key North American cities (NY, Vegas, LA, Montreal and Toronto) will have higher than average grosses, but many of the other NA and particular European dates (which have general admission tickets) will likely be the usual 2 - 2.5 million per date.

    I expect it will all average out to around 2.5 - 3 million per show, so I'm guessing the minimum she will gross (with 80+ dates) will be 200 million with a top figure between 240 - 250 million.

  5. Here's a review in one of Swedens biggest newspaper, Aftonbladet. The review is all praise and give her 5 stars of 5. I think it's the first time since Re-invention tour she receives a 5-star concert review in Sweden:

    Wow, I'm impressed! Aren't Swedish critics usually quite harsh about Madonna? Or is that Germany I'm thinking of?

  6. I've done some basic maths. According to Forbes, the average ticket is $350. Ok, count 300. 63 dates so far. Say 150000 per date (it should be more). That's 280M.

    But there's a gap of a month and a half in the tour still. I have seen a theory that they're adapting the stage for South America (it would make sense to go there when it's summer there) anyway.

    But it's safe to say that so far it aims at 250/300 M. Just the maths of the tickets x cost.

    Those figures that Forbes quoted were referring to secondary market averages!

    Looking at past tours, the average ticket price of her arena dates has been around $175-$200.... However, as everyone has been saying that ticket prices for this tour are a lot higher and larger portions of the arenas are set at the top price, it's probably fair to say her average will be closer to $250?

    I'd be more conservative with arena capacities too (as her stage usually takes up a lot of room), so say an average of 12,500.... So there's 3m+ per date right there!

    There's probably room for another dozen or so Asian dates and maybe even a couple more Australian/New Zealand dates... So call it 75 dates in total.

    In which case I'll revise my original prediction to around $225m! :)
