  1. Madonna was interviewed on Australian radio last year and the interviewer asked her why 4M had been edited down to 3 minutes. Madonna was surprised and said something like, "What? No it's not, it's four minutes long!" The interviewer told her that the version they were sent ran for just over 3 minutes and she said something like, "Who did that?! They didn't ask me!" so it seems odd that she'd agree to have it on "Celebration". Timbaland barely deserves his "featuring" credit, now!

That's one of the reasons I prefer the three-minute version. I'm glad they chose it instead of the album one.

  2. Okay, I'll bite. Why do you think that the music of the 60s is not better than what came after. Not flaming here, just curious.

Well, I will admit that the music of the 60s is better than rap and hip-hop, which, to me, are the lowest forms of music.

However, I get tired of classic rock and soul, especially that of the 60s and 70s, continually being held up as the highest forms of popular music. Even after the 60s and up through the present day, the most critically acclaimed music acts seem to be the ones that are rooted in--or evolutions of--that sound: such as Bruce Springsteen, U2, Nirvana, and other alternative rock bands--and NeoSoul artists like Lauren Hill, Alicia Keyes, Nora Jones, etc.

Now, if you like the sound of classic rock--white males with guitars--or of 60s/70s-era soul--Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and their musical descendants--then you are probably happy with this pervasive critical template.

If you don't, however, the prevalence of 60s-centrism gets tiresome.

As for myself, I just don't like the sound of electric guitars. Instead, I prefer keyboards, which I believe can offer a wider and more interesting aural palate. Likewise, I just don't like the vocal style of soul and R&B music, especially that with lots of runs and ornamentation. Instead, I like a more minimalist vocal style in which the voice closely follows the melody. Those are some of the reasons why I like later pop music better than 60s-era rock or soul. Finally, I like dance music--the energy and euphoria that it embodies, which I just don't find in most 60s-era music of the classic rock/soul variety.

So, to me, disco, the New Romantics, 80s dance-pop, and contemporary dance and electronica music are just more aurally appealing to me. I also prefer song lyrics that are more playful and clever rather than serious and self-important. And that is also why I prefer many later forms of pop music over that of the 60s.

  3. MadonnaTribe is reporting that "Celebration" has just debuted on French radio and is in heavy rotation there. I wonder if anyone who has heard it can tell us if the version they are playing is similar to what has leaked or not. That might help us determine if the leak is the radio version or not.

  4. OK- liking it MUCH more than I did "4 Minutes." This is MADONNA, and that track just felt like it wasn't (even if JT hadn't been on it).

Definitely a throwback to the early days (the theme, the spoken vocals, the laugh), which is fitting given the project. The production isn't anything very special, but it sounds good enough and isn't far off of "When Love Takes Over," actually.

Love the vocals, especially when she sings higher (sooo high at spots in the end)

    Great nostalgia track.

I totally agree with you. Whatever else can be said about the quality of "Celebration," one thing is for certain: it is light years better than "4 Minutes."

  5. There is an spoken intro, but if that shows up on the radio version, I don't know?

Amazon.com lists the download they are selling as the "album version," so I wonder whether or not there will be a separate radio version, especially since this album version is only 3:35, according to Amazon.

  6. I really want the 7" versions of her early stuff, the remastered Like A Prayer singles, remastered Into the Groove, and of course the new tracks.

I totally agree. The key thing for me is getting remastered versions of the 7" singles from the 80s, especially those from "Like a Prayer" (and of course the two new tracks).

  7. But Celebration from what I've heard so far is very old skool nineties house and not like the contemporary sound.

Still, the new style electro and urban pop songs may be enough for it to get air play.

I share your skepticism about "Celebration" benefiting from the current radio play given to "dance"-leaning acts like Lady Gaga.

I think radio feels that Lady Gaga and the like are still within the realm of a contemporary R&B and hip-hop sound. After all, the beats and rhythm tracks in most of those songs could easily be used in most contemporary R&B songs, and the vocals of Lady Gaga and her peers have what passes for an R&B sound (in the vein of a Christina Aguilera, at least). Plus, Lady Gaga is young and even considered "hot" by some, apparently.

In contrast, Madonna is older, does not have anything like a contemporary R&B-style singing voice (thank goodness!), and the beats and production of a song like "Celebration" are much more Euro-disco and not R&B or hip-hop (again, thank goodness!).

So, if "Celebration" does become a radio hit in the US, it would most likely be because it's just an outstanding song in its own right--or because radio has decided to re-embrace Madonna (in the wake of the Michael Jackson death), or because some other factor, I believe.

  8. This is a fan made cover. "DANORBIT" (a member @ Madonnafanzine) created it and posted it in a thread labled "custom covers"!

I really like this. More importantly, I think that it would appeal to the buying public more than the official cover, as this is the Madonna that most people first fell in love with (84-85 era)--and for a greatest hits package, that's certainly not a bad thing.

  9. Justify My Love, the first TIC single, was very different compared to her previous work. It was a complete surprise and pretty cool. It also hinted at her new musical direction.

    This, however... :scared:

I must say, however, that I like this 20-second clip of "Celebrate" much more than "Justify My Love" (I personally prefer it when singers actually sing--rather than just talk--during their songs).

  10. The 20 seconds sounds promising. Definitely has the old school "dance, get up and do your thing" going on. Sounds like one of those big rave songs as well. It could be very successful... even in the U.S. if radio will give it a chance.

I must say. It's quite disappointing to see fans pick a part of 20 second excerpt of a song. I guess if people are being honest, you can't take that away from them, but it just sounds to me that there are some who can never be pleased. It's like their stuck, hoping she's going to duplicate something she did in the past to the tee. But I'm not sure if that is true either since some are trying to compare this to "Get Together", claiming the song is awful.

For me, from what I can tell... this song is what Madonna's all about... she's one big party. So while the song may not sound like a throw back to the 80's, the theme and lyrics definitely give you that feeling. For me, that's where my appreciation all began. I'm beginning to think that if you can't get into this song, then maybe it's time to hang it up as being a fan. Because I don't know what else will please you? It seems the same fans (or it seems so) are never happy or appreciative anymore. All they want to do is sit around picking the song apart.

If you genuinely don't like it. That's fine. We all have our tastes, but from what I've read since the 20 second clip has leaked, is the same old complaints. Some people never will be pleased.

It's a shame because right now, we need all the fans to unite... especially in the U.S. and make sure this gets a fair shot on mainstream radio. I just remember back in the 80's, whatever song Madonna released, radio was so willing to play it at fan's request.

    Great post!

I'm really liking this new song so far.
