The first box office totals are in for Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour that launched on Sept. 9. With the first 10 performances reported to Billboard by promoter Live Nation Global Touring, the tour’s total gross stands at $20 million, based on 132,769 sold tickets from the first eight arenas on the schedule.

Highlights include the tour opener in Montreal with sellout crowds on two nights and a gross of $3.4 million to kick off the tour’s six-month run. Washington, D.C.’s Verizon Center hosted the first U.S. performance with a packed house of 13,271 on Sept. 12. Two shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden produced the top gross so far with a $5.2 million take from 28,371 sold seats on Sept. 16 and 17. A second Canadian performance on Sept. 21 occurred at a new venue, the 18,000-seat Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City that opened just 13 days earlier.

The Rebel Heart Tour’s opening leg in the U.S. and Canada will hit 20 arenas before wrapping in San Diego on Oct. 29 after a seven-week span. The following week, the tour heads to Europe for shows booked in 11 countries through December 20. Then during the first quarter of 2016, the tour will resume after the holidays with treks in three continents: a second North American run in January, Asia in February and a final Oceania jaunt in March.

Madonna’s last stint on the road, the MDNA Tour, topped $305 million in box office revenue in 2012, earning her the No. 1 ranking on Billboard’s Top 25 tours chart that year. Her highest-grossing tour on record is 2008-2009’s Sticky & Sweet that reached $408 million in sales, landing at No. 5 among the top-grossing tours of all time.

U2 Closes N. American Leg of Innocence + Experience With 150,000 New York Fans

By Ray Waddell, New York | August 04, 2015 3:55 PM EDT

North American leg churns $76 million -- now Europe's on tap.

U2 wrapped the North American leg of the Innocence + Experience tour in stunning fashion with an eight-night, sold-out stand at Madison Square Garden in New York City that grossed nearly $20 million from the attendance of almost 150,000 fans.

Marked by special guests on stage and VIP attendees in the audience, the critically acclaimed shows put up a final tally of 149,942 tickets sold, with a gross of $19,474,285, according to Billboard Boxscore. That takes the total of the tour's opening leg to 650,582 attendance and $76,166,563 gross from 36 shows, all sellouts. Innocence + Experience is produced by Live Nation Global Touring president Arthur Fogel and his Toronto-based team, promoter/producer of all of U2’s tours since PopMart in 1997-98.

The follow-up to the historic 360 tour of stadiums in 2009-11 (which grossed $736.4 million and moved 7.2 million tickets, both all-time records), Innocence + Experience marks the first time U2 has played the relatively intimate confines of arenas since the Vertigo tour in 2005-2007. The band makes full use of the venues, with groundbreaking staging and video that allows for 360-degree seating, including general admission on the floor. Calling the North American leg “a huge success on every level,” Fogel tells Billboard that the tour, “blew everyone away, fans and critics.” He continues, “In our world, people use the term ‘great’ all too easily, [but] in this case it is an understatement. They are the best live band in our business, and if there was any doubt by a few, they should have learned that by now.”

The tour began May 14 in Vancouver, B.C. A Nov. 16 bicycle accident in New York’s Central Park that seriously injured Bono, the band’s frontman, did not delay the start of the tour, which had long been slated to begin in the spring of 2015. In fact, the jogger who first happened upon Bono after the crash, and the EMTs who tended to him, were both in attendance and recognized at the Aug. 30 show, and the latter even fulfilled a promise to knock back a shot of Jameson with the singer, who obliged from the stage.

At the final New York show, Bruce Springsteen took the stage to accompany the band on “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and a cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” Springsteen was attending the show with presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton. Other guest performers throughout the Garden stand include Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, Lady Gaga, and Paul Simon. Among the celebrities who attended were Paul McCartney, Nile Rodgers, Alicia Keys, Jon Bon Jovi, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Chris Rock, producer Steve Lillywhite, model Christy Turlington, MTV personality (and former Billboard Touring Awards host) Matt Pinfield, Howard Stern sidekick (and former Billboard Touring Awards host) Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate, tennis great John McEnroe, and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh.

The tour resumes Sept. 4-5 in Turin, Italy, with a 34-date leg that will culminate with four shows in Paris, Nov. 10-15. Included in this European tour, also in arenas, are four shows each in Amsterdam, Stockholm, Berlin, and Barcelona, and six shows at London’s O2 Arena. U2 tours typically span three years, and while it is expected that U2 will return to North America in 2016, Fogel declined to release details, saying only, “I can’t wait for the run in Europe this fall, and beyond.”

  3. Everyone is so preoccupied with Gaga that no one has commented on the post above re: Jim Farber in the NY Daily News going so far as to review the demos. I would be annoyed if I was Madonna, although at least he is positive. I had to skim the article as I don't want any spoilers.

    Ooops. Sorry. I deleted it.

  4. Found this the other day - think it's puts things in perspective...Madonna sold out at Philly

    http://www.phillyburbs.com/entertainment/justin-bieber-can-leave-you-scratching-your-head/article_29ee2815-4c50-5b93-825e-2303b32fe7de.html

Justin Bieber is perhaps the biggest pop singer in the world.

That said, why is it that his show Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center at 3601 S. Broad St. in Philadelphia has not sold out?

Any number of reasons can be attributed to his lack of ticket sales, but a big one is that pre-teens can’t afford $86.50 for a good seat at the cavernous hockey-and-basketball venue. Even the nosebleed/can-barely-see-him seats are $36.50. And then there are the scalpers’ prices.

Another reason for Bieber’s lack of ticket sales could be overexposure. He has been everywhere — the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “The Simpsons,” “Saturday Night Live,” “C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation,” “American Idol” — you name it.

And with only two albums to his credit (plus a holiday release), overexposure can be a problem.

A third reason might be that Bieber’s voice and music style are changing. His voice is decidedly deeper, the result of going through puberty. And he has chosen to use hard-core rappers Ludacris, Big Sean and Nicki Minaj on his new album “Believe” (2012).

Still, a world-class superstar act shouldn’t have trouble filling 20,000 seats. Unless his fans have gotten so used to downloading his music that they are not familiar with actively seeking out live music.

  5. Didn't expect to like MIA and Minaj as much as I do in this but adding them to the video/song seemed to be a good idea...they add an extra fun factor to it.

Liking the song more and more - definitely not one of her best lead off singles but miles better than 4minutestosuckmycock

  6. Steven Tyler is getting blasted for his National Anthem rendition today - I don't know what people expected (it's fuckin Aerosmith frontman, people) but it's merciless. No way Madonna is NOT lipsynching or HEAVILY supported w/tape and backup vocals. Her career could be in jeopardy if she tries to go without it, and that's not an overstatement.

  7. If she was to do any Christmas song, it had to be SB. Total 'sequel', in the public's eye at least, to Material Girl. I just heard a RuPaul version of this and it is the worst hot mess of a song ever...trust me, Madonna's version is not bad at all!

  8. WHAT??????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE HAVE NOT TALKED IN YEARS AND TODAY YOU GAVE ME THAT STATEMENT?????????????????????????

    :hurt:

    :inlove: Missed u too cutie...

Ok, I said that mostly to get a reaction out of you cause I know how much you love DWT but having said that, it is my least favorite tour. I honestly do not watch ANY of the performances from that tour anymore whenever I want a live Madonna fix. the whole stage persona at the time just wasn't workin for me - sorry. And yes, I got what it was about but as someone said, it wasn't a concert. It was Madonna performing TO the audience, rather than getting them to join WITH her. I remember at the time Janet was also on tour and I went to see her show soon after Madonna's show. And while I gave Madonna credit for doing what she wanted and not performing any of her big hits, I had much more fun at Janet's show (God, did I just type that?).

Anyway, love her always and forever but if DWT was forgotten as part of her canon, I wouldn't notice or care. There, flame away!

  9. ^ Absolutely. There best not be a bad word said in this thread about SL - not only is she a paesan, she's the ultimate female movie icon in my opinion. Looks like they met during the early/mid 90s judging by the pic. I think SL's characterization of M during that time is on target.
