  1. HITS:

    Weakend Top 10:

    Summary:

    1 Usher 435-450k

    2 3 Doors Down 65-70k

3 Sex And The City 40-45k

    4 Frank Sinatra 35-40k

    5 Leona Lewis 33-38k

    6 Duffy 33-38k

    7 Bun B 33-38k

    8 Madonna 33-38k

    9 Mariah Carey 33-38k

10 Death Cab For Cutie 30-35k

Don't mean to sound negative but I need to see that to believe it. If it sells 33-38K this week it means it almost didn't drop at all from last week which I have to say i find it impossible. What is selling the record exactly? There is no new single and there was no new promotion.

But again, I hear 4M a lot from people's cars (more so than before) and I heard also Candy Shop yesterday and not in a gay area of New York (where I live). So the record is getting good word of mouth????

A 5th week inside the top-10 will be a pleasant surprise of course but i'm afraid HITS is way off this time.

  2. ... her 3-year old's favorite song on the disc is GI2M... and my friend also likes the song a lot.

i really think GI2M could be bigger than 4M. we just need radio to play it.

um .. sorry but how's that it's appealing to a 3-year old an indication it could be bigger than 4M???? if anything, it makes the song sound completely childish and no better than a Dora the Explorer song.

  3. Not a big fan of the remix either (mainly because I don't like oakenfold) but it's not bad and defnitely doesn't suck. They could market original and remix to different audiences. They could release a video mix also. They could even release a more urban remix for the urban radio ... well they could do many things but given they way they promoted the record so far most likely they will not. Madonna and/or WBR do not seem to be willing to go all out for another radio hit. I think they have spend enough money already for the collaborations and they don't want to spend more unless they see some revenue back which so far is not happening ...

  4. First of all,'Hard Candy' is doing okay by today's standards. When you factor is several things (Madonna's age,how long she's been around, illegal downloading, the state of the music industry right now) the album is FAR from the flop that you make it out to be.These days, selling nearly 300k in the US during the first week is an accomplishment.Janet certainly couldn't do that.A 49-year old artist with a Top 10 hit single is a rarity in the US,as well.So let's stop it with this 'Hard Candy is not doing well" nonsense, okay?

As for the "authentic emotion" that you feel is lacking from Hard Candy.....a few of the songs ("Miles Away","Incredible") are obviously very personal, dealing with her marriage to Guy."Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" is another song that clearly means alot to Madonna. She wrote it several years ago for a musical that she wrote.Needless to say,she obviously has a personal connection to the song and the lyrics.

Since you're assuming so many things, here's my assumption: Perhaps she simply wants to wait until she's on tour to give these songs the focus, attention and promotion they deserve? As opposed to going on a bunch of stupid chat shows to explain the songs? Did you ever consider that?

    I agree with Bad Robot.

Emotions aside, the CD is underperforming. In my opinion part of the reason is because it's not a great Madonna CD. On the other hand, given the state of the market and the fact she is 50-year old pop-star, it's not doing all that bad either.

But from the way she talks about it and from the way she has talked about her previous records, I don't think she's feeling this one - of course this is only a speculation.

At least the first single, 4M, is a smash - by all standards - and one of the biggest songs of the year so far.

  5. And I disagree that you cannot sell a product to kids and their parents at the same time - we've seen it happen before with major crossover acts. I'm not arguing that it is a common event, but you act like no one who is 14 would like the same music as someone who is 35 or 40. I think good music transcends those things.

.. the last time a record was bought by little girls, their mothers and their grannies was Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts. And that because she had the AI machine behind her. It will NOT happen anytime soon again and certainly not by any of Carrie Underwood records.

It is a very rare thing to happen. Why did you think Madonna's HC was a good candidate to accomplish something like this. Because Music sold well 8 years ago? THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO. The market changes by the minute.

Madonna will achieve serious crossover sales again if she has a big artistic moment like Ray Of Light (which is likely) or serious comeback like the Eagles had last year (unlikely for Madonna because she never dissapears for a long time).

Hard candy is a good record but it's not a great classic pop record. Think outside the madonnanation box.

  6. This week's numbers....

    2 3 MADONNA FEAT. JUSTIN TIMBERLAK 4 MINUTES 150170 -19 185159 1181900

    -- 21 MADONNA GIVE IT 2 ME 37654 999 0 37654

    -- 101 MADONNA BEAT GOES ON 11348 999 0 11348

    -- 180 MADONNA CANDY SHOP 7578 999 0 7578

so the theory that the week of the album release the 4M single was going to get a final push in sales was unfounded.

I guess the moral of the story is that the market is unstable and unpredictable ...

Still I think Madonna is doing well ...

However, without knowing WBR, Madonna's & Live nation business plan for the project we can't make any predictions about the future of HC. Perhaps WBR is not willing to spend more money for promotion (it's her last record after all) and plan on making earnings by releasing her Greatest Hits later this year. We don't know what kind of agreement Live Nation & Madonna have on promoting the record but I would think Live Nation is already doing enough with the promo concerts in NY, Paris & London. And we don't know how much money out of her pocket, or time she's willing to spend on it.

  7. I'm disappointed at the U.S. tally - I over-estimated it by a large number - but it could be much worse. And honestly, she still has a good chance to do well in the worldwide total.

You're dissapointed because you don't understand the music business and the market in US. A white female artist these days can sell so much. If you looked at Britney's and Nelly Furtado's recent #'s and then took into consideration the fact that Madona is 50 you would not come up with a 400K estimate. You can't sell a "product" to kids and their parents at the same time. A radio hit is important but doesn't guarantee album sales.

Mariah's audience is more diverse (yes, she sells herself as a black/r'n'b artist) and she is still 38 so there is more flexibility there.

280K first week Hard Candy is pretty good.

  8. There are a lot of theories that the success of 4M is because it is appealing to casual fans and not the hardcore fans so much. I wonder if something similar is happening with the album, where the hardcore fans aren't as into it, but perhaps the long-term sales will be stronger as casual fans are less likely to buy it opening week.

That said, it's probably a decent bet that the album will drop at least 50% in week 2, as is standard for major releases. If she sells around 120k next week, I wonder if that would be good enough to stay at #1?

I think 4M is a hit with everyone because it's a good commercial song. I don't think it's more complicated than that.

On the other hand I'm afraid the album has left hard-core AND casual fans ambivalent. It didn't generate curiosity like COADF, it didn't make fans worship it like ROL or LAP, it didn't polarize audiences like Erotica, it doesn't have a strong political statement like AL, ... i think it's just missing that "something" we've always come to expect from a new Madonna record. It's a good record though.

So given the circumstances 280K first week is quite an accomplishment. I'm happy with it.

  9. Did Mimi stopped Bye Bye for sale on Itunes?

If she did, that is such manipulation!!!!! Cheater!!! Wait for AI to be high and then release the single on Itune again to get a lot of points.

That should be on the news to let the public see how shady her record company is.

no she didn't. Bye Bye is No 50. If she reads this board you probably gave her a good idea though.

  10. But don't you want her to still be relevant?

    well well... we're all different...

well, relevant is very objective. The Eagles sold millions with their last record. Are they relevant??

Madonna will be fine. Her relevance will always be questioned no matter what. It doesn't matter all that much if she sells 200K or 400K the first week with this record. Really.

Charts and Billboard positions are fun but in the long run are waste of time and energy. I remember being dissapointed back in the day when the True Blue album stayed "only" 5 weeks at No 1 (I wanted it to break the Thriller record) or when the Like A Prayer stayed in the top 10 for like 15 weeks as oppsoed to matching True Blue's 30+ weeks. You know what I mean? We as fans are never happy and we want more and more and more ...

Just relax and enjoy the music in the new record. I'm sure the videos and the remixes will be fierce. A greatest hits record is coming at the end of the year (hopefully with news songs) and she's also touring. Madonna is not going anywhere ...

  11. I wasn't that far off :vogue:

I don't see anything wrong with her opening numbers. So she will sell 50000 less in her first week then with Confessions, big deal.

I don't think people realize how HUGE Hung Up was all over the world including US. I'd be impressed if her sales are 700000 in the first week worldwide.

Yeah, I think some people here didn't really appreciate how big COADF was for Madonna, even in the US. It was a big comercial and critical success even without a big radio hit. There is no way on earth Hard Candy will match COADF's opening numbers and it doesn't have to in order to be considered successful.

HC is a great follow up to COADF. The first single is a big top-3 hit so far and first week sales of almost 300K are very-very respectable and within the expected range. Some TV appearances would have added about 50K more in my opinion which would be nice but not a big deal. Madonna is a veteran act. She is not above Oprah and AI but at the same time she doesn't need them to continue her legacy.

Worldwide first week sales of about 700K would be great too.

  12. HC only number 9?????!

Anybody think it's because she sold so many as pre-orders??? Cause it was charting in the top 10 as soon as she made it available... you know what I mean guys? Maybe everybody just pre-ordered it and that's why it isn't charting higher.

    Either way... it's scaring me.

Dude, HC (deluxe edition) #1, HC (regular edition) #8

  13. 1 more 4M remixe available today:

    Peter Saves New York:

    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore...14&s=143441

HC is not anywhere in the top 100 so I guess something will change soon and both versions will probably be No 1 and No 2, although these delays are certainly not good. What are WB and Madonna's people doing????????????????? It seems we are the only ones worrying about these things.

  14. Most of these things are pretty nonsense promo... or stuff that doesn't really reach much people at all or makes a difference in the end...

    nice try though

Are you for real???? Tha EVMA peformance was legendary. It did have a big impact in the US too. COADF had a great promo and huge buzz and better reviews than HC and this is why it sold 350K the first week.

If HC sells well will be mainly because of the success of 4M.

I believe the internet broadcasting of the concert in NY will be a great promo but she still needs a couple of TV appearances.

  15. ya. in a way Im shocked MC only sold 475k (NOT bad), yet she was EVERY freakin single grade A show, has a HUGE US fanbase, support from radio etc etc..and to not break 500k is shocking lol! And cause of all these factors, its a little concerning w/ how M will sell and I may now have to lean closer to 300k instead of 350-375. Yes, shell still be #1, will sell more than 250k, but if she doesnt cross 300k it wont shock me.

I'm surprised with Mariah's numbers also. Yes, it's a big number for her if you take it out of context. BUT SHE WAS EVERYWHERE and everything was working to her advantage! Almost everyone, even her haters (i.e. us here) was expecting her to easily pass the 500K mark and with Oprah and AI to push 600K ... hmmm ...

I now predict HC to open with around 300K.

On the other hand it may be that Mariah was over exposed and people noticed that ... so there may be still place for Madonna to sell 350-400K copies ... we shall see ...
