  1. Madonna considers the tour as the actual promo.

A tour is not a promo for any record or song.

And certainly a video where she dances awkwardly in her undies in front of an old couch is not a promo either.

She could have done some promo with TV and radio interviews but she chose not to so nobody requests her song on the radio because nobody knows it exists.

As a result, Give it 2 me will be a much worse flop than Sorry, Get Together and Jump.

  2. why does so many here feel so invested in this song NOT charting ; it seems as most fans will be happy if this song does make the HOT 100 again ... i don't get it ...????

when 4 minues was weeks out the same thing was going on .. eveyone calling it a flop .. ultimately it sold 2 M in the US and spent 11 weeks top 10 ...

even if this song is done ,so what, each track can't be Vogue... and the tour will still happen ; for a fan site the negativity towards Madonna here is so high ...

Seriously i'm sure another top 10 sinlge will make no difference in anyone lives !!

We're just passionate about Madonna and charts. Charts is like an addiction, but harmless. We have developed over the years a very strong connection with charts, numbers and statistics (and Madonna of course). I know some of you people don't "get" that but really you don't have to. Go read some other boards. It's not negativity and no, our lives will not change if Madonna has another top 40 hit. But if she does that will feed our addiction more. And it will give us satisfaction.

Besides, this is just a message board. You read into everything way too seriously. If people want to be obsessed with charts let them be!

  3. Just like the Beat Goes On, I also think Dance 2Nite could actually become a hit. Nice lyrics, nice beat and same chemistry between Madonna and Justin as in 4M.

If the collaboration with Justin worked for her and the radio once it should work again.

And the more I think about, HC doesn't sell all that well because it doesn't contain more songs like 4M. People were expecting big Timbaland collaboration songs. I think the numbers prove my point (4M is one of the biggest songs of the year) no matter what the Madonna purists - who like Give it 2 me - say.

  4. I wouldn't dare call LAP a flop, but to me just looking at the bare stats and all the good it had going for it and the music market in 1989, I have to say I've always felt that album underperformed.

so funny.....and the Erotica years around here would've been a real hoot I'm sure....lol

Perhaps at the time it felt that LAP undeperformed somewhat but looking back I think everyone agrees is the one of the best albums of her carreer. It's a fan and critic favorite. Lika A Prayer is one of the best pop songs ever and Express Yourself is an era-defining video.

hey even Erotica may have sold "only" 2m in the US but it created more buzz in the US and worldwide than all the Mariah/Janet/Whitney/Paula etc records together.

Madonna may not have been the biggest seller at any single point of time but in retrospect she was the most influential, controversial and talked about (and the accumulated sales numbers are also on her side). I hope Hard Candy continues this tradition and years for now we'll look back to it and say "oh yes it didn't sell millions but that was a great era". Unfortunately I doubt about that now but i certainly hope to be proved wrong.

  5. So true. Madonna always had someone selling more than her, "seasonal phenomenons" or masterpieces. Selling 600K now remains a sad thing, but...

    1989 Janet Jackson “Rhythm Nation 1814” 6×p

    1989 Madonna “Like A Prayer” 4xp

    You forgot:

    1989 Paula Abdul "Forever Your Girl" 7 x p

(it was released in 1988 but exploded in 1989 and stayed in the top-10 for almost as long as Like A Prayer was in the top-100 at the same time)

It's true, Madonna was never the biggest seller even among females. But she was always around.

  6. As Give it 2 me doesn't seem to be helping the album sales, I'm curious to see if her turning 50 next month will have any impact on Hard Candy.

ROL's sales actually increased for a couple of weeks when she turned 40 (OMG. Already 10 years ago!). But that was a better album and there was positive buzz about her turning 40 and being spiritual and a mother.

  7. Madonna will have to start making good quality pop music a la Ray of Light - something that appeals to adults and young people. Her HC album sales are lower than normal - whoknows what the next album will sell? i can understand her not wanting to put toomuch effort into promoting her releases but then less people are likely to buy the album and then less people are likely to attend her tours.

Is there a future for a woman who will be in her 50's soon making poppy records like Hard Candy or will people see it as a bit embarrassing? Most kinds will probably notbe able to connect with her

I am no fan of HC but i do wish it would do better sales wise than it is doing. I hope it goes platinum - everyone should have a benchmark and Madonna's should not be around 600,000. fair enough AL sold 670,000 but that was a risk. HC is playng it safe.

With each album she reaches a new low in the USA - a song form LAP misisng the top 10, a song form the follow-up barely scraping the top 40, 2 songs form the follow up barely scraping the top 50, then an oscure ballady phase and a no78, then a no 93 peak from a ROL final single, Music's releases were all top 25 but thats because only 3 singles were released, then her first uncharted song from the AL album, followed up by unchartings songs from COADF.....although COADF psitons and sales have increased from AL.......HC singles positions are already better than COADF but still the album maybe be lucky to sell half of it. HC singles all have a chance tp reach top 100 - radio might not play her but digisales are on her side this time.

I agree with most of the things you said but not that she reaches a new low with every album. She was always able to recover from "failures" and move on to different things and make an impact when the Billboard statistics were against her. With quality music, better videos and promotion, digital sales, etc. she should be able to sell at least a million from each record and have her songs go Top 40. I dont think anyone is expecting her to play the game of AIs + sales combination to secure a position in the top-10 until she's 100 years old but yes, we expect from her to make good music and promote it. She said with the Live Nation deal she's looking for innovative ways to distribute her music. Well, I'm looking forward to it because right now she seems she's doing whatever is possible for her music to go nowhere.

  8. um .. noone is obsessed with anything. This is a chart forum. If you don't want to read about record sales and chart postions go to other forums to discuss whether Madonna will make millions from her new tour or not, since this is what you seem to care more about.

Here, we're talking about her music and if it reaches broad audiences or not.

  9. Are you for real? Who the hell are you to call Madonna pathetic? Madonna is putting together a tour to please her fans, rehearsing GOD knows how many hours a day.

Pathetic is YOU, feeling all high & mighty sitting there behind your computer plugged into the wall judging someone who will NEVER be forgotten. You on the other hand? You're a NOBODY. Pathetic indeed.

Sorry newbie but she IS pathetic. I've been a fan since day one. I always thought her genius was her self-promotion skills. Not anymore. She needs to get out and promote her record. ... or, better, release a record with more substance.

  10. And the album that was #2 to Confessions in its first week...

    105 UNDERWOOD*CARRIE SOME HEARTS 7,027 7,029 0 6,471,588

and I hated Carrie Underwood ever since. LOL! Well, it's still on the charts but this doesn't change the fact that this and her latest record are full of generic crappy material. The reason she sells so well is because she harmlessly appeals to the "typical" all american family, from clueless little girls to their grannies and their husbands. I'd take Madonna and her Gold only record over Carrie and her 7xPlatinum any time. Thanks!

  11. yikes....

ok this is very annoying. She is practically doing NOTHING for the record.

In the past she has done promotion for the 2nd single:

    Ray of Light (Oprah)

    Don't Tell Me (Letterman)

Hollywood (MTV Awards: The kiss with Britney)

Sorry (Grammy Awards & Ellen; ok she did HU at the grammies but then danced with Ellen to sorry)

Most of the time those TV appearances helped. At least in combination with better videos they created awareness for the single and they pushed album sales up. Okay, perhaps WBR doesn't want to pay for her plane tickets to go see Oprah or Ellen and she doesn't want to pay off her own pocket but she's in New York for christ sake. She has plenty of options.

  12. Its a double edge sword though. If they dont play the track people dont know its out there for they cant request it or even have the opportunity to like it or not. At the same time if they arent playing it and a huge amount of fans calls to request it they know that its only Madonna's fanbase since like I said, no one else would know its out since they arent playing it. I could care less what happens at this point. If it catches on thats great if it doesnt, whatever. Im just glad I got to hear a new Madonna song (4 Minutes) non stop on the radio again after 6 damn years of hardly anything.

We can do so much .. yeah, we can call a couple of times a few radio stations but how much is this going to help? btw, it has never worked in the past. She needs to make people aware of her new song so they can start requesting it from the radio. She needs to do some promotion and some TV appearances, she needs to pick up the phone and call the radio stations again .. and she should have done a better more appealing video ... but I understand WBR didn't want to spend money so that lame ass video is not Madonna's fault.

  13. oh, i didn't know it was the 6th song from the album (was just 9yo)... wow, i wonder why they made such a great song a 6th single...

Thriller wasn't such a great song when you first heard it as part of the whole album. It was one of those songs you hear and you say ..meh.. what makes it sound like a great song decades later is its notorious video. What an era that record was though ... it was just endless ... too bad MJ had ruined his legacy. But money and fame can be difficult to deal with. Even though I'm a fan, I still cannot believe how this tiny woman from Detroit has managed to keep herself sane in the public eye for almost 30 years now ...

  14. If Coldplay can be #1 on Hot 100 with #75 in airplay, I hope the "Hot 100 is an unfair chart because airplay matters more" debate will come to an end...

umm .. no, if Coldplay can be #1 on Hot 100 with #75 in airplay, it means that a song can still be No 1 with no airplay if it is a massive seller after a massive marketing campaign.

  15. Erotica's first shipment was probably 2 million or more so they were able to certify 2X right away. With sales down and less stores to stock (or overstock) shipments and certs are going to come closer together now.

Erotica's first shipment was 2.5 millions - so it was certified double platinum immediately.

I read somewhere that Confessions shipped 1.8 millions total. Given than it has sold 1.67M so far and it selling really really slow there is not way that WBR will ship more anytime soon. That double platinum certification for Confessions may never come.

  16. She doesn't care about album sales. I think that's obvious, and has been for some time, probably since before "Music" (remember WIFLFAG was single #3, and that effectively killed the album).

So, she doesn't "have" to do anything. She does what she wants. She probably makes 95% of her income from tours/merchandising/licensing and very little from album/single sales.

I find it hard to believe she doesn't care about album sales. I would think Madonna cares more about Madonna-the brand than Madonna-the millionaire. She can still make tons of money from touring but she needs decent album sales also to maintain her legacy. During the MUSIC era she released WIFLFAG after two very successful hit-singles, when the album had already sold a lot of millions. She liked the song and released it as a third single. It didn't mean she didn't care about sales.

I'm very puzzled about the lack of promotion on her side after the release of Hard Candy. In previous eras yes she didn't do TV shows for the second single but she was more visible. Where is she now??? What's that half-assed video for Give it to me?? Where are some killer remixes for it???

Ok I accept she does what she wants, but something just doesn't feel right. And I'm wondering, is Madonna the one who doesn't care or people don't care about her so she & her label do not bother??

  17. poor coldplay.. the song has huge sales and it's no1 on the hot digital chart but the US radio doesn't touch it

Why poor Coldplay?? I would say "fuck US radio" instead. Coldplay will have the biggest seller of the year with their new CD. Unfortunately, Madonna focused on US radio this year instead of the bigger picture which is why we are where we are right now, trying to analyze weekly AIs and digital sale combinations and explain how and why. But it's a chart forum so I'll not say more ...

  18. You call fans who fidget and release their frustration with others "hysterical''. I dont think that just because some of us (incl me) express different views on "GOLD" cert being a bad thing are being hysterical and senseless.

Also, no one is cursing or being vulgar here. In fact most of the thread is based on debate and various opinions from fans re: SALES OF HC

Afterall, this forum is designed for this type of civil discussion-even if some dont believe it sounds logical.

Whats logical to one, may not be logical to someone else

And there is a cogent fear. WBR does NOT certify constantly=meaning HC can remain :GOLD: for ages.

And to "CHART" fans who love #s- IT UPSETS US!

I think we should all just relax and wait for HC to run its course on the charts. Yes, the fact that WBR rushed to certify it Gold may mean they don't believe in its potential to become Platinum but this is only a speculation. There maybe other reasons they did so. It's not like WBR doesn't have anything else to do than sitting around and accessing Madona's certifications.

The certification may mean exactly what it is. It reached 500K sales and it's gold. Simple as that.

Regardless the certifications, people and media look at the actual numbers also. HC will not be the lowest seller of her career if it actually sells more than AL. No matter what the certifications say.

  19. I know it's such a cliche and stupid question to ask at this point but i wasn't in the net the past few weeks, are there any plans of a promo for GI2M? After all, that's what most posters here were saying that MADONNA was just saving energy for promo of the 2nd single because M is just letting 4M sell itself... so are there any scheduled promo in the US?

um .. haven't heard anything. no.

  20. Mariah's drop from her last album is higher than HC's drop. So, comparatively, it could be argued that HC is performing better.

    - Matt

Mariah is doing well. She's approaching 1 million in sales. She's had two top-20 hits already (one of them No 1) and according to her fans at least the record has a couple of more songs that have the potential to become big hits.

Madonna is doing just ok. 4M and HC had a good run in US so far but she seems she hasn't done all that well in markets she usually dominates (UK for example). I think the most important thing is that her fans are not 100% behind the project and this will defnitely have bad impact in the long run.

  21. I'd say the major divas look something like this:

    1 Mariah Carey

After being down and out with Glitter and Charmbracelet, she managed the most impressive comeback of any artist in quite some time. In the weakest sales era of the past several decades, she still managed the biggest opening of her career. Still, E=MC2 won't reach Emancipation levels.

    2 Madonna

She bounced back nicely from American Life and has her biggest radio hit in 8 years right now, and the album has stayed in the top ten for quite some time. That said, it is also barely selling above American Life, and will most likely go down as her second-least successful studio album in terms of sales.

    3 Celine Dion

Certainly not doing huge numbers, but she has hung on fairly well and her last album sold a million copies. She's not a radio star like she was in the mid-90s, but then again, she was never quite on the same level as some of the other divas.

    4 Janet Jackson

3 strikes and you're out. It seems like every diva was having difficulties in the early 00s, but both Mariah and Madonna bounced back -- Janet didn't, and has seen declining results for her last 3 albums. "Feedback" was a bigger hit than anything from the past two discs but it's clear Janet is no longer a chart force and barring a shocking comeback won't retain her 80s/90s glory.

    5 Whitney Houston

Where'd she go? She's been M.I.A. for several years and everything since "My Love is Your Love" has been disappointing. Rumors about a back-in-form comeback have been swirling for some time but they've yet to materialize.

I diagree with the order. Janet should be last on the list and it's all her fault. She didn't do anything to protect her lagacy after the super bowl fiasco and let others screw with her career and her music. She doesn't seem to care and pretty much behaves like retarded at all her public appearances and interviews.

Whithey we can't categorize her just yet. After My Love Is Your Love she had only one unsuccessfull record (that was her first and only flop) and she is a legend even if she doesn't release any more records. What would make or break her is the success or not of a new record - not her personal life. For the time being she's better off without a new CD.
