What we need is an Emma Gonza-less version of the album version.

I would really like that as well.

There are a couple of versions on YouTube that simply cut the intro and then fade up quickly from there, but they sound too abrupt.  I really hope that someone has the software and skill to just edit out her voice and keep the instrumental intro.

I remember reading a damning review of True Blue in junior high.

I remember reading such a review back then as well; I wonder if it was the same one.  It said that "Live to Tell" and "Papa Don't Preach" were too "maudlin" and that "Open Your Heart" was the only good track on the album (the only one comparable to her Like a Virgin-era hits).

  4. Although their sounds are similar just like WTG and LIB I actually strongly prefer WTG in every way. Just pushes more buttons for me and find it even catchier and adore the production!

Me too. I just think that "Who's That Girl" has a slightly better melody than "La Isla Bonita": more poignant, wistful, and urgent.

  5. I honestly don't see how people can love Madonna and not love the Bitch/Express Yourself side. It's quintessential Madonna

Well, let me see if I can explain.

You have to remember that for those of us who were fans from the very beginning, there were ten years--from "Everybody" in 1982 up until Erotica in 1992"--when she didn't release a single song containing expletives or truly explicit sexual language.

Yes, there was "Like a Virgin," but saying that you feel "like a virgin" as a way of talking about a new relationship is hardly sexually explicit, in my opinion, especially when compared to the lyrics of songs like "S.E.X." or "Holy Water." Indeed, no album or song of hers had a parental advisory warning up until Erotica, which was, again, ten years after her first release.

I'm not saying that none of her fans--or even many of her fans--from the very beginning object to expletives or sexually explicit language, just that such things were simply not an element of her music for a very long time and therefore not a quintessential part of her music for a very long time.

By the way, I love "Express Yourself," which of course contains neither expletives nor sexually explicit language, unless your consider talk of "satin sheets" or "bed" to be sexually explicit, which I do not.

  6. The final version doesnt have the same breathtaking, inspirational feel as the first version we all heard. Thats whats missing for me. I get why she didnt even put it on the main version of the album but i dont get why she didnt spend more time making this the classic it should've been.

I really agree with you on that. Your description of the demo as being more "breathtaking" and "inspirational" captures exactly what I was trying to explain in my earlier post.

I would also like to address another possible objection to my argument in favor of the original demo: that is, that it doesn't fit the album. I agree that it wouldn't fit well with the tracks as they are currently sequenced. However, if that album opened with the original demo of "Rebel Heart," just before the similarly euphoric "Living for Love," I think that it would work quite well (and, by the way, would have made a better lead single, in my opinion).

  7. Well, sorry, but Avicci demo was better than the album version. I do love the song, but it's a waste of opportunity. I know the demo wasn't original and sounds very avicci, but it was so catchy.

    I agree with you.

I think that slowing it down is what really hurt it. The infectious quality of the melody was lost; now it's just an album track that doesn't really stand out. You'll notice that very few reviews single it out as a highlight (I think only one that I have read has done so).

Also, the loss of some of the warm electronic touches makes it sound kind of bleak.

Fortunatley, we do have the original demo, so those of us who prefer it can simply replace the album version with the demo on our own playlist.

  8. Still love the original in every way..sorry. One of best and most instant, total classic sounding Madonna songs in like forever. No doubt it wouldve done WAY more than LFL lol. I think the 'final' version is hollow, lifeless, and basically a mega wasted opportunity. NO idea why all the key hooks, vocals and core sound were neutered so dramatically. Dunno WHO heard something inferior w/ the demo vs the final LOL. Just sounds like forgettable filler now.

Sadly, I have to agree with what you say here.

At least we still have the original demo to listen to.
