domyeyebrows Posted July 2 Posted July 2 I'm just catching glimpses of reviews and not reading until I listen - but it's all looking very positive! 4/5 from everyone so far. I know it's annoying not to get the 5 but often a 4 star score is matched with a 5 star review when you read it. I'd say it's a critical success already! Quote

smirnoff_ice Posted July 2 Posted July 2 i dont think the reviews give too much away, the gist of it is 'it is her best since confessions 1 but not quite as good!' Quote

Mr Ciccone Posted July 2 Posted July 2 Not at all surprised that these uptight publications simply can't bring themselves to give her 5/5 Quote

I have already seen some spoilers and I want to be surprised tomorrow, but so far 4 of 5 stars is great. We know critics will never acknowledge Madonna the way she deserves Reading them can give you some bias before hearing the album, but these reviews are mostly spoiler-free and are very positive overall. No M album is perfect and that’s part of her genius - she’s not trying to impress you - she’s trying to tell you something. I think 4 out of 5 stars across the board is a good indicator that this album is a return to form, so to speak. To be fair, by calling this album CONFESSIONS 2 she set herself up for comparisons to the 2005 masterpiece which is an almost impossible act to follow. Having said that, I think making this a continuation of sorts of COADF was also a genius move - while we and M know this most likely isn’t her last go round, it’s definitely time to remind the world why she’s still The Queen. Well, getting a 5 out of 5 is very tough for Madonna - look at who she has to compete with - herself. Also, music tends to grow on people, especially M’s because it’s not mindless. I don’t know that I’ve ever given M a perfect score right out of the gate but usually begin to appreciate the music more on the third or fourth listen. Edited July 2 by *mlvc* Quote

redhot Posted July 2 Posted July 2 In a way music reviews are a silly game, these so called music critics get to listen to it once or twice? And then write a review based on that. Most of the time you need to live with the songs/album for a while to really get all the nuances and details. Sure, some songs are instant. But a lot of my fave albums I may like instantly, but they need to be digested properly. So music reviews will never really be fair. And it comes down to personal taste. M also has a lot of bias against her. I think very few music journalists will give her a fair review. Quote
Eltacubo Posted July 2 Posted July 2 This is all very good! Lets remember confessions I and hung up even were well received but not as highly regarded as they are now. Overtime after impact, lengetivity and nostalgia make songs and albums be revered in higher ways through the years than they were initially. Quote

Silverfox Posted July 2 Posted July 2 I’m happy with 4 stars, it will encourage people to buy or stream the album. I know if I see a 4 star review of someone I’m even mildly interested in, then that’s enough for me to check it out. Also you can’t really ask for a better headline than ‘best Madonna album in 20 years’ Quote

Out of all artists Madonna is past point where she needs to worry about reviews. She just needs to show up and people will eat it up! Quote
