Figured we should start this, as the reviews will begin trickling in soon.

Do y’all anticipate the reviews to be on par with COADF? There’s been a bit of revisionist history with the original Confessions album — Upon release, I remember Rolling Stone only gave it 3.5/5 and indicated she sounded like a veteran artist for the first time. Now it’s one of her most acclaimed releases.

From what we’ve heard, it sounds like it’ll be a solid album — only concern is the length — Rebel Heart was critiqued because it was too long, and I remember reviews indicating that if it had been winnowed down to 12 or so tracks, it would be a solid release.

I know I remember that how wrong Rolling Stone turned out to be!

I remember thinking at the time, could it have been because it’s an American publication and the album wasn’t really on trend in 2005 for the American market?

Especially rich because they gave Hard Candy a 4/5 and MDNA 3.5/5.

Everything we've seen and heard so far sounds like it could be embraced by critics.

Isn't 4 stars the maximum in Rolling Stone?

No it’s 5 stars hun the maximum. RS has never given 5 stars to a Madonna studio album.

How ROL didn’t get a 5 star rating is beyond me!

I predict they will award CONFESSIONS II 3.5 stars, if Madonna is doing a cover with them, perhaps 4 stars.

Absolutely absurd she’s never gotten a 5/5 from RS — but I do maintain that despite being the most successful female artist of all-time, her music is vastly underrated and (seemingly) purposely minimized by critics — specifically her songwriting abilities and quality.

💯

It’s all payroll now anyways, Taylor’s Showgirl got 5 stars as did Beyonces Lemonade from Rolling Stone.

Tells you everything you need to know.

If she wants a 5 star review from RS, she needs to pay like Taylor and Bey. But she's kinda stingy for that, which I applaud.

I still remember a review of MDNA splashed on the cover of one of the biggest papers in the NY/NJ area (Might have been The Daily News) declaring the album one of the best of her career. 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭

I think LAP originally got 3 stars in RS

Have they revised a lot of her original star rankings then babe?

That says so fucking much about how it’s taken a long time for the industry to appreciate her worth & output.

didnt Erotica got 4/5 from RS?

Yes I think Erotica, ROL, Music & HC are the only Madonna studio albums to achieve 4 out of 5 stars.

Most of her discography picked up 3 out of 5 stars.

The ROL review however was a chore to read…it’s like the were struggling to say it’s really good. Her NME reviews and interviews are much better imo.

It feels almost to me as if Rolling Stone are not really on the curve with their reviews for Madonna’s albums. I also remember the reviews of ROL being like that!

But they got Erotica right, I’ll give them that one.

I also prefer NME, luckily, the new MOJO collectors magazine has some articles from NME interviews, which are always a delight to read, it’s been nice reading it this weekend a trip down memory lane.

yeah, they really should have cut it down to 14, but i think the last track might be like an outro? so maybe it's 15 full songs. they also probably want to boost streams with more tracks.

i expect this album to average 75-80 on metacritic. i think we're going to see a lot of 3.5 and 4.0, with a few outliers (i'm sure pitchfork will assign the album to that lamb again and he'll give it 50/100 - he gave COADF a negative review on his blog back in the day).

perfect ratings for new albums is a fairly new phenomenon. i don't believe it was ever that common in the 80s/90s. 4/5 would have been a very good rating for 1998. probably deserved 4.5 but 5 was probably not ever going to happen.

3.5. deserved higher though, especially since they called it "as close to art as pop music gets." but again, reviews/ratings were different back then. 3.5 is very good for a female pop artist in 1989.

When do we think review embargo will lift?

the outpouring of goodwill for M makes me think great reviews are coming

i'm guessing we'll see a small handful from the BIG outlets (rolling stone, etc.) next week but the rest will come on release date or after.

If the album is out Friday, Thursday should be the embargo lift. Especially with a stateside holiday.

we'll probably start seeing UK reviews first, tomorrow night or thursday morning. major US outlets (RS, etc.) friday. pitchfork and the rest after that.

I can’t wait. I expect a 5/5 from Alexis Petridis of the Guardian.

The first german critic/review...

its more about her career and the last year and less about CII:

Maybe the intended tone of the article got lost in translation, but the whole thing felt so... half-hearted?

yes. its more like "finally she's finding back - out of her embarrassing time the last years".. sounding fresh and modern again - even when until now theres no real hit under the three singles...sadly in Germany we don't have since years a hype about her anymore...

Brazil goes every time crazy and celebrate her legacy. and Germany is looking for bad parts and just observe
