stevo208 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 (edited) I think they're playing the long game. They don't want to do everything at once. BYL is a grower. They want to keep the conversation going. I think the marketing and release schedule is perfect so far. I'd rather this than a higher chart debut and then sink into oblivion. Edited May 4 by stevo208
strictmachine Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Sorry don’t think this being house pop has anything to do with anything, some of y’all make it sound like she released some kind of bjork deep cut from medulla Ariana’s song didn’t do well because it sucked and her next song was way better. And Madonna, at her peak success, was specifically creating music that DIDN’T sound like everything else on the radio at the time. It’s doing what it’s doing and I don’t for a second think it would’ve done anything significantly differently had they followed the exact same sequence of events with a song that was electro pop instead of house pop…it is a pop song first and foremost.

Instead of striking while the iron was hot they waited until it was lukewarm. i think it may have helped but only marginally. streams are 90% driven by playlisting. madonna and sabrina fans were always going to stream/download it. i don't really believe there were millions of causal listeners who were salivating for it and then forgot about it because it's a week later. it's going to show up in the algorithm either way. 14 minutes ago, strictmachine said: Sorry don’t think this being house pop has anything to do with anything, some of y’all make it sound like she released some kind of bjork deep cut from medulla Ariana’s song didn’t do well because it sucked and her next song was way better. "rain on me" is the only one i can think of and that was six years ago and driven by mass mental illness from covid.

Rain on me was eurotrash at best, not at all elaborated like the great house tracks, including BYL

But that marginally might have made all the difference if we are of the belief BYL will have its moment only briefly which could absolutely be the case. I don’t think it has the ability to grow & grow and I don’t think you do from your previous posts, so therefore releasing it at a time it would have had an advantage, even just a small one would have gone towards a better debut on its opening week, which is probably going to be its best week.

If the music consumption was still driven by digital downloads, the momentum from events like the Coachella performance would matter more. People would download the single on an impulse. But with streaming it does not work like this. It is not enough for someone to stream once or twice because of a glowing press article. A song needs consistent streaming over a long period of time. Playlisting and social media exposure is what counts.
Kurt420 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 If the song is meant to be a sustaining hit, then that's what will happen and it will be organic. If it's not it won't. If it's not meant to be, then releasing it two weeks ago may have meant a few more streams those 1-2 days following the performance and it'd be dead by now. Releasing the video tomorrow will prob give it a few more streams but then by Fri we're back to where we now. All of these excuses as to why it's starting to "flop" are negligible at best. We have to understand that this is an uphill battle no matter what style the song is, no matter who else is on the track, no matter what day it drops, no matter what day the video drops.

It is, but pretty basic, cheap and repetitive

But pressing play on it on Friday 17th April to coincide with Coachella I believe would have benefitted the track. All the marketing from Warners could still happen in the following week(s), but it would have given BYL a bigger & better start in my humble opinion.

This weekend BYL had competition with Devil Wears Prada soundtrack. People's attention was devided. As much as Gags music is bad, attention is a relevant asset and BYL would have profited from it having being released earlier, and I am not only talking about streaming, but specifically about momentum.

bard Posted May 4 Posted May 4 so i guess all the hints about a devil wear prada connection was about the anna wintour promo?

Its a cool advert and a cool tie in I just wish it was more available internationally, but it looks like it’s limited to selective American theatres only.
luizotaviobarros Posted May 4 Posted May 4 I'm really curious about the video and whether it'll resurrect the song.

I think it will boost the track, even more so if it’s an epic video to set tongues wagging. But I think it will be temporary, I don’t think videos are that important now to send streams flying through the roof for a long time??

Anyway, for the first time in a loooong time I can tell myself "they know what they're doing" and actually mean it. So, this is just the beginning of a wild ride. Couldn't be happier.
Who Is That Girl? Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Madonna was a legacy artist by the time streaming was mainstream - her team sat on their hands through the Interscope years, which were the death knell to her commercial success. There is very little perspective - Madonna could release the equivalent of LAP or Vogue, charting would be no different. It will never happen again for Madonna in the way that we want, chart wise. If MJ, or even Prince were alive; do you really think it would be any different? I am wondering if M and her team are looking at this project as repairing poorly managed releases. I love the new music, and think it is as good as anything she has done post 2000, BUT to avoid this bullshit 'pressure' of competing against her untouchable zenith and the zenith of other artists; well frankly I could do without it. That said, look where we are currently compared with the global backlash of 2019–2022 post MX, and the henoius Instagram/face/butt era. I was starting to think it was over forever, legacy included, remember she WAS a global joke. Madonna even calling this record COADF part II is fucking ballsy - she knows that success is not repeatable, certainly not at the face punch of Hung Up. If that was the case BYL is not the way to do it. Great song, but it ain't Hung Up - it was not meant to be. This record should be called Erotica part II - the mood, the vibe, the house, the reception - and I mean that positively.

Either it catches on or it won't. And should everyone on this forum say if they released it post Coachella it would have been a hit. First we don't know how it would have went as it wasn't released post Coachella so in reality we don't know and would never know if there would have been a difference. I think it wouldn't have been a huge difference. Even if it was streamed twice as much as it is, if the GP doesn't click with iy, it won't become an organic hit and that is her only chance. It doesn't seem to be catching on sofar. Maybe the next single could do better.

I think the thing we have now that can make the biggest difference is the backing of a record company. The fact that it's looking likely that BYL is going to hit the Hot 100 at all is a testament to that when you consider only two of her singles during the Interscope years made it there (and idc what anyone says not ALL of those singles were "wrong") Even with WB backing though, the limitations and obstacles are big. I think so far CII is and will increasingly be seen as successful but I don't think chart placements are going to be what determines that. Both Brat and Mayhem (sorry to bring it up!! lol) are both considered successes but neither of them necessarily burned up the singles charts (DWAS is the exception to that but as we know, it was sort of tacked onto the album, it wasn't considered the "lead single" to her album when it was released).

Mr Ciccone Posted May 4 Posted May 4 A hit for Madonna in 2026 is a song that is well liked by both critics and her wider fanbase. In that respect I feel that IFSF and BYL have already been bigger 'hits' than almost everything she released in the Interscope years.
