If she is shooting a video with Sabrina for the 1st single then she isn't doing the soundtrack for DWP2...

How come? Couldn’t it be possible the DWP2 track is a collab between Madonna & Sabrina ?

A music video usually takes 4 weeks to edit so that puts us at the end of March, that makes comfortable sense for a soundtrack song for the film to come out.

Looking over this, I d say the collabs have all been flops minus JT and PROBABLY the Weeknd, but that song felt very the Weeknd and Madonnas presence is not really felt I guess. I like Popular (though I prefer other more pop Weeknd songs), but I never really considered it hers.

💯

4minutes is not only her best collab hands down, but one of her bigggest ever singles and certainly one of her legendary strong leads. It’s the last strong quality lead single in her back catalogue to be honest.

Very true within LGBTQ community both songs are popular. Outside of the committed fandom I think they are pretty much non starters.

But choosing to have a featuring on the first single of the new album is a release strategy. She's done it many times, in some cases it worked ( and some would say It was a good release strategy), in others it didn't (and many would say it was a bad release strategy). Obviously I'm talking in terms of sales or streaming. What we hardcore fans prefer is another matter.

i'm just not sure launching a sequel to a beloved album whose only feature was from an unknown and uncredited israeli singer with a high profile collab is the right move if she's trying to reclaim her legacy, sound, and fanbase.

this is why i think male collaborators are her best bet. another weeknd collab, this time more in the style of "blinding lights" (retro synth-pop), would honestly be the only one i could see working for both the charts and the album itself.

Madonna's peak in US & UK with collab songs

"Me Against the Music" with Britney Spears #35 & #2. It was a disappointment because of the star level and being both artists first big collab but the song did OK and it was not a flop. Their previous lead singles didn't to much better at the time.
"American Life"#37 & #2
"Slave 4 U" #27 & #4

"4 Minutes" with Justin Timberlake. #3 & #1 HUGE HIT.

"Revolver" with Lil Wayne. #130 in the UK. FLOP, but it had ZERO promo.

"Give Me All Your Luvin'" with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. #10 & #37. It did what it had to do in the USA, but it was a flop in the UK.

"Bitch I'm Madonna" with Nicki Minaj #84 in the USA. It did OK in the USA after the first 2 singles where nowhere to be fund in the charts (Living For Love was a HUGE flop)

"Medellín" with Maluma #87 in the UK & "Crave" with Swae Lee. Both "flops" but Madonna was already having trouble charting her own songs and both artists were neither big in the USA or UK.

"Levitating" with Dua Lipa & "Break My Soul" with Beyonce. Both remixes, ZERO promo with Madonna and their original versions were much more popular than this remixes.

"Vulgar" with Sam Smith #69 in the UK (love that peak position). A flop, but again ZERO promo.

"Popular" with The Weeknd and Playboi Carti. #43 & #10. A HIT and one her longest charting songs ever.

So, she is very hit and miss with her collaborations, but I feel a Sabrina Carpenter one could help her reach a Top 50 in the USA and Top 10 in the UK if this the first single from the album with all the COAD2 hype and has proper promo (video, radio and streaming push, live performance)

solid assessment but just pushing back on a couple of these:

MATM was close to a flop in the US and was mocked on sketch comedy shows.

GMAYL didn't do what it had to do in the US at all. it plummeted like a rock and set the floppy tone for the entire MDNA era (and, tbh, the entire interscope era). she was performing on the biggest stage in the world and wasted it on a song nobody liked or wanted.

i agree but they didn't do what they needed to do at the time. she doen't need another cult classic that gets appreciated in 2046.

I think its one of the best tracks on the album and it was the only song with airplay tracktion in the USA

both facts but "popular" proves the right song/collab is capable of doing more.

But this is what many of us think, not her with her entourage. And in any case, until we have more solid elements, these are just suppositions.

I didn’t say I wanted her to release another cult classic lol. I was just stating what they became over time.

I could’ve said that BIM was an actual ‘hit’ but I didn’t want to get that debate started again. 🤣

It is a necessary move, if she wants to capture an audience wider than her core fanbase. The album is not going to sell relying on nostalgia. If she wants to make it a commercial success and reach a young audience, she needs the collab. And from all the possible options, looking at their commercial appeal and likely compatibility with Madonna, for me Sabrina Carpenter is the best choice. I hope the rumor is true.

Matthew must be very confident to say this:

And yeah, what I'm noticing is a pattern of people-with-connections being careful about calling this the lead single. Maybe our theories about a similar MV rollout to MX could be true.

Yeh perhaps !

She has had 4 months now since her last studio session with Stuart which we all assume was the finish of the album. That’s a long time to shoot multiple videos and prepare promo material.

If the DWP2 song is happening I would prefer that is a solo Madonna gig. The exposure will be huge so it doesn’t need a younger artist with a huge streaming platform to capture imaginations.

Use a collab in another single to give some longevity to the album and leave the use of the song in the film to just Madonna.

do you remember if "Jump" benefitted huge from DWP1?

I like Sabrina and I’d be fine with a collab on the album, but not for the first single. If they’re planning on a second single before the album, then it would be great for that.

And aside from that, 2 singles before the album makes for a much more interesting rollout for everyone, so I’m crossing my fingers for that.

Not really but it’s not a fair comparison because it was the 3rd single from COADF and actually commercially released in September, 3 months after DWP2 premiered.

There was no streaming back then for the sales to start from the moment people who went to see the film to come home and start streaming it.

If true, this time it’s very different. It will be the lead single and benefit from instant streams after people hear it in the film.

The more reliable sources have indicated the lead (or what they had heard many months ago) was solo.

So … hopefully that calms down some of the pearl clutching… because it could mean (as others have said above) that the most recent video shoot may not be the first single — could be a follow-up. Or, it could be a remix/feat of the single, which may mean we could enjoy both…

Just another angle to consider — may or may not be true. (Just like the Sabrina rumor — not sure how positive we are that she was present at the video shoot.)

I have zero desire to defend him, but — correct me if I’m wrong? — my recollection is that he predicted the October release date on which we ended up getting Right On Time as a preview track for the Untold Chapter. So … lead single for M15? No. But we did get a new song on that date; “single” is such a divisive word for that song from that project. But … yeah, I mean, people could give him a bit of a pass for that one. He wasn’t correct precisely, but he also wasn’t entirely off the mark.

Don't know if this was mentioned but Megan Lawson, who has been M's go to choreographer for quite a few years now also posted a picture of the interior of a movie studio this weekend. So she was also present at the filming of the music video...

I hear you and yes I do remember that.

I think Into The Groove has a reputation of jumping on rumours/insider information just after they land, this is another example I guess?

The Sabrina info has been circulating for the last couple of days and now the account has jumped on it.

Yeah, he has definitely been wrong before. But I thought you were asking about that one time he said “if it doesn’t happen…” etc. I thought that ended up being Right On Time, although I may be crossing my wires.

I think honestly there was some Sabrina rumor *long* ago, but there have been a lot of assumptions that way because of IG follows and whatnot. So … interesting that it has come back around (with a vengeance).

Choosing to remain unbothered by any of it. Will not really be upset either way. Do hope we get something solo this time around somehow, someway.

Jump wasn't the main soundtrack song from the film like DAD, Beautiful Stranger, LTT etc

I think a collaboration with Sabrina could be very interesting. Very radio-friendly. Since I don't think the new album release will overlap with the release of the two vinyls of "Confessions" and "Confessions Tour," could it be very likely that the first single will be released from Friday, May 1st onwards?

not sure she's the "best" choice in terms of reaching a wider audience (that would be taylor), but i suppose in terms of popularity and fitting with the sound of the album and not alienating madonna's core fanbase, sabrina is a decent choice. but the weeknd would be even better.

i think you and some others might be overestimating the impact having a song in the film will do. it's good exposure but i don't think it's a game changer or is going to result is huge streaming numbers. going viral would.
