strictmachine Posted July 10, 2025 Posted July 10, 2025 Personally, I think she’s done plenty of self-referencing and overdid it on rebel heart. It would hardly be something new or experimental at this point. Would be great to see her do another new original album that stands firmly on its own musical merits without needing to retread her old music yet again.

If she is to explore a sample(s) with Stuart on the new album, I’d rather the original speculation of sampling some house tracks from the 90s. It’s been 6 years and counting since her last studio album, I don’t think she needs to open her back catalogue for the new songs. I’m sure her and Stuart have plenty of inspiration. Plus, if the lead single is going to follow in the footsteps of the first confessions lead single with a central sample like she did with ABBA, I’m not sure how it would be received if it was a chorus built totally around ITG or Vogue. I think it would be criticised more than praised it would be viewed as she’s ran out of ideas and reaching for her previous hit singles.

Mamba Posted July 10, 2025 Posted July 10, 2025 I hope is not true the rumor that Warner is not happy with the new album. I don’t what she had in her mind for the last 4 albums.

I don’t what she had in her mind for the last 4 albums. That is not the rumor at all. Keep in mind that even the original statement is a totally unsubstantiated rumor. We’re discussing it because we have no more info to go on, but … the rumor isn’t even that Warner doesn’t like the album. The rumor — and I stress that it’s just a rumor — is that M is shopping the album around because she might not be happy with Warner. That’s an entirely different thing. Personally I hope that rumor is completely incorrect and unfounded. It doesn’t seem to make much sense, but then we know very little about what is going on behind the curtain.

But it could be true it is not certain the studio time she has had to record has been facilitated by Warners. Madonna & Stuart could have recorded it all independent of WB and therefore Madonna is free to choose who she wants to release it. As far as we know, she isn’t in a contract for a new album only the legacy project. Therefore it is very plausible she might want it done elsewhere.

Steve Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 I doubt she is actually shopping anything around…that would require too much effort too close to her bday …someone on her team may have started a rumor for interests sake…she should also take note of Mariah going to that new structure that has an in w Apple Music ..the single barely charted and the follow up (likely a ballad) hasn’t materialized likely bc the lead flopped.
peter Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 I mean, I know nothing, but … If she is “shopping it around,” it may just be for leverage with Warner in negotiations, since we are not aware for certain that she has a contract with them for new music. (Though, weren’t some of the one-off releases through them? Either Hung Up on Tokischa or the Sickick Frozen mixes or … something else? Maybe Material Gworrl? So she obviously has a channel to go through with them if she needs it.) I personally think the lagging legacy project stuff is partially for leverage with the new music — a sort of quid pro quo thing. Where she can slow walk and withhold the “goldmine” stuff in favor of just “loose change” projects if they don’t want to play ball with her for a proper album launch of new material. If they play ball, then she looks more generously upon the legacy projects sooner rather than later. But I also think maybe it’s kind of subtext — I don’t think she is extorting or anything. I think the prevailing thought on both sides must be that the legacy projects will benefit from the bio project (and vice versa) — even though the retrospective tour could’ve served the same purpose, they obviously waited (perhaps not ready with anything due to her health issues)… That’s just my own take on it. So I don’t think she is shopping the album around with the intent to land anywhere else. But if she is looking, it’s just to flex her hand and get the best offer from Warner. (And, if that’s true, then she must have self-funded her time with Stuart and his compensation. Since he has a home studio, it may have reduced expenses — no hard bill for the studio time, just travel expenses and Stuart’s fees, into which he could admittedly roll a charge for studio time, but I kinda doubt it based on their history. She probably paid him a fee and would incur more if she needs more revisions, wants to commission remixes of singles, etc.)
Carey Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 On self references, please be done with it. It hit a peak with Veni Vidi Vici and she's now done a GH tour. We all love the last 40 years and glad she's embraced them, time for her to put her eyes squarely on something new now though.

If the rumors are true and we are getting 90ties house album we surely will get Erotica references. Unlike COADF which referenced the 70ties and she wasn't famous, she was ruling the 90ties. I feel like those rumors are untrue. She was treated MILES BETTER at WB. They have an interest in ELEVATING HER PRESENT IMAGE as they have the rights on all of her previous albums. If she were to be respected again and regarded once again as the queen of pop, WB would benefit greatly as this would improve the interest in her previous work. The shopping around could be true only if WB has disliked the album, just like they did with AL. But I cant believe Stuart and Madonna wouldn't make a great album.

Oh yes, I agree she overuses it in style/fashion and even lyric bits. But I was thinking more of the idea of taking a sample of, say ITG, and make a new song out of it (like HU with the ABBA sample).

But don’t you think if she did that people would criticise her heavily for running out of ideas and using her own past hit singles to try and get a new hit single? Building a lead single around a famous and iconic hook like she did with HU is one thing when you are sampling someone else. Madonna sampling herself with a lead single, well that is very different in my opinion and would open her up to a backlash I can hear it now…. She’s outta hits and has to fall back on old ones.
AlvaroLiam Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 I think there might be some truth to that rumour, but not in the dramatic way we're discussing. Seems like she doesn't have a recording deal anymore, so as some of y'all have said, her time in the studio could have been self funded. Hence the reason why she's free to offer the album to other labels, with Warner probably having the first option. Some fan could have heard this and assumed an scenario where “she wasn't happy with the FEL treatment”, etc.

She has recorded an album without being in a contract to produce a new album. She has the goods and now is free to go to a label with the music, rather than the contract to make the music coming first. Good for her, there might be a label out there that falls in love with the album and really wants to support her in bringing the new stuff to the world in a big way that suits her.

LAV is sampled in his remixes of "vogue." if it's done cleverly, it could be very cool. her discography is iconic. 37 minutes ago, AlvaroLiam said: I think there might be some truth to that rumour, but not in the dramatic way we're discussing. Criticism will always affect her. If she samples another artist's song, they'll say she's not only out of ideas, but she's also "stolen" other people's creativity. As for the quotes from her old hits, I also agree that they've become too many. She started with VVV on Diplo's recommendation, which is a great song, but I prefer her to experiment and create completely new songs. A thing she's done from the beginning without too many problems.
Beastialg Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 I don't mind samplings if the production of the song is good. "Hung Up" is beloved worldwide and the "Gimme Gimme Gimme" sampling is used masterfully.
bard Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 she's been referencing her past songs in her lyrics since the very beginning of her career: CAC, D&D, HN, etc. that's not going to change. but sampling herself is not something she's done a lot. this point in her career, when she's now officially a legacy artist, working with a producer who loves to sample, in a genre (if it's indeed house music) that is known for sampling, it makes perfect sense!

I hear you! For me, if this is a one time only deal and not a resigning of multiple new albums (which is very unlikely as we know she has other BIO projects lined up plus her age) at this stage of her career, I am unsure exactly how much a label will actually do for a new Madonna album in terms of effort & financially endorsing it. I mean an indie label is no good they won’t have the traction and relationships with Spotify & radio stations the major players do. WB have all the skin in the game as they have her entire back catalogue and any new buzz over a new album that draws attention to her previous work, they stand to gain from it. Theres huge incentive for WBs to really go out and work the new material. Any label hired in just for this one album won’t stand to make a big return from it which worry’s me we might get the Interscope situation all over again.

bard Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 if stuart were to sample an old madonna song, i think it would have to be something from the first album ("everybody" or "holiday") or maybe ITG. annie's "greatest hit" is a great example of how to do it similar to HU:
AlvaroLiam Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 I don't think a multiyear deal for new music aligns with the point of her life that she is in rn tbh. She seems to be really enjoying this era of relax and vacations that has come, I assume, precisely because of her lack of contractual obligations with music and tours. So it makes sense if she's looking for a label just for this record. Who knows? Maybe that could be the start of a work relationship with them. I also agree with Bardo: even if she ends up publishing it with Warner, her obligation is to seek different options and negotiate.
JayMac Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 If this latest 90s house music album rumour is true, perhaps this random Veronica Electonica Release is Warners way of testing Madonna’s reach with this 90’s inspired music

Test what? I mean it’s a collection of existing remixes and a demo from ROL that is more trance inspired than house. The whole release is for her hardcore fanbase. A test would be what Stuart did with HU months before releasing it playing a dub of the lead single in a deejay set to a crowd. I don’t think it’s grounds for a test plus, I think it’s very likely this has been released due to the BS EP being delayed/cancelled.
