But if Taylor releases the new album in October/November it will stay at number one for weeks and weeks and weeks, it will dominate the position until pretty much Christmas.

Who cares at this point it's like saying The Rolling Stones can't release an album cuz Cockplay is gonna release one... circa 2005. 

Headlines arent what they used to be either... Besides Madonna won't lose 'sales' because of Taylor.. It'll be a beter quarter either way..

M should contact them (Bey & TS) then pick a date in fall that does not conflict directly with their dates.  Ideally she’ll get #1 in sales/streams and/or sales for that week of release and it will get the “she still got” “Queen” headlines even if it drops afterwards (history shows it will). She can interrupt their stay at #1.  Tay stay likely, bey not guaranteed.

The record companies will deal with all this, surely? She can release beginning of October.

As long as Madonna doesn't release right along with TS (who would?) she will hit number 1 and then it will fall off the charts. Madonna fans still buy physical copies and most of us buy all formats of her releases.

If you expect Madonna to get #1 in streams you're setting yourself up for a king sized disappointment. 

It's been six years.

Back when Madame X came out streaming was not as big. She grabbed that number one with 95,000 album equivalent units (with 90% of those coming from physical sales).

To put things in perspective, last week Bieber had to settle for #2 with 163,000 album equivalent units. When Charli's Brat reissue came out at the peak of Bratmania it only managed to peak at #3 with 105,000 album equivalent units, having big streams and a plethora of physical formats to choose.

I'm tired of the obsession to be number 1, I understand why, I understand that it makes a good headline. But in the end, the only thing I really want from Madonna is a good album, the rest I don't care about, and if some people prefer the tepidness of a Taylor Swift, good for them, eh, I still say it's not very difficult to sell millions of albums when you're so smooth on just about every possible subject.

Yeah it's getting ridiculous. 

I said this in the Beyonce thread, but I'll say it here too: Why are we asking Madonna to 'hurry up' or to 'postpone' a release based upon what Beyonce and Taylor do?

Is the world supposed to just stop for these two? 

4th quarter is big enough for them all so I just don't get this idea she should be 'worried' about them. She's been going up against new pop stars for over 40 years and has been just fine.

At this point, I'd gladly settle for a top-5 album that also does well in Europe/South America and that doesn't drop like a rock the following week.

Exactly. I dont think M has ever picked a relase date to avoid someone or something else, so why start now.

Unfortunately, they are huge and the music world DOES stop for these two. If Madonna released her album around the same time she would get slaughered for getting buried under the rubble. I can see the media and all the fanbases now rubbing their hands together in glee claiming she's a flop and irrelevant.

Madonna is welcome to do what she likes, but she needs to avoid them if she wants the album to be a success.

i agree that it's the perception that matters, unfortunately. if she drops around the same time, it will only highlight the gap in sales/streaming between them. i don't think pushing the album to next year is the solution - but obviously she should avoid releasing it around the same time. as others have said, she's going to release it when she wants and probably won't lose sleep over not debuting at #1. hell, some of her best albums didn't. the most important thing is that the album is GREAT. if it is, word of mouth could keep it afloat longer and that's ultimately what really matters.

well, things are arguably more chaotic today than they were 30 years ago and i don't necessarily see people gravitating toward more boring music now than they did back then. generally i think music was better back then but every generation believes that music during their own youth was better than today.
