Why do they need a new server? I can't imagine traffic to that website would be overwhelming!

Yes, he has directed videos for her… He has a page with his portfolio — sometimes he just did edits of things for social media. But I believe (if I’m not mistaken) he did at least one of the Frozen remix videos (the Sickick remix). He also did the backdrop video for Erotica for the Celebration Tour.

Things get out of date and sometimes you can no longer update an older version of something — and then you have to invest in the new thing and migrate.

Icon still has some administrative permissions over tour presales. Perhaps for that system to communicate with current technology outside of its own IT infrastructure, they needed to upgrade.

And that’s as far as his involvement in Madonna’s visuals needs to go.

He’s fine for social media touch ups (if we must) but not to head up a music video, especially for the lead single.

The only thing I can think ICON is ever used for these days are pre-ticket sales for tours.

Could it be an early sign a new tour is about to be announced as the album drops ??

Total agreement — I just wanted to supply the info that, yes, in fact, he has directed things. I would not expect him to direct anything for album singles, but … we’ll see.

As far as Icon server migration goes, I think it is more dictated by technology. You update when you have to — your site gets migrated when your host says you have to. You don’t always have a lot of control in that regard. Postpone such updates at your peril — your site can be down and then you’re behind the eight ball if you haven’t kept up with things.

It’s a black ball with the number eight on it. (I didn’t know the reason for the phrase — had to look it up. In pool, you use the cue ball to put all the numbered balls into the pockets in the table. Apparently, the eight ball is supposed to be pocketed last, so … if your cue ball is behind the eight ball, it is practically impossible to play your shot without hitting the eight ball — which incurs a penalty.)

I assume the drug reference is sort of downstream from the pool reference. I don’t really know how that came to be, but I did know there’s an alternative meaning that refers to drugs of some sort.

As an aside, Rihanna’s character’s name in the movie Ocean’s Eight is Eight Ball. (It’s a nickname.)

And there used to be a knickknack called the Magic Eight Ball. It was a silly thing that people used to use like a fortune teller. It had a multi-sided die floating in liquid inside, and a little window to see into it. People would ask it a question and shake it or turn it over and then peer into the window to see the answer. For example, you might ask it, “Will Madonna release her next album in 2025?” And the Magic Eight Ball might give an answer such as, “Outlook dim.”

I can confirm this as I work for server hosting IT company exactly. We are the ones changing the platform now so our clients need to go through migration whether they like it or not. If I expected further usage I would not migrate the server, I'd add another instance or increase db/memory. Migration is by default a sign of EOL technology

If we don’t get an announcement of the album being released this year, it will be next year.

inherently every day that goes by without some kind of news (official or otherwise) makes an album this year less likely, but her birthday or any other artificial benchmark are totally arbitrary. nobody here knows anything "for sure."

Very true.

But she always marks her birthday with a big social media post, sometimes a whole week of them.

It’s a big occasion for Madonna personally, so it’s the perfect time to announce the new album IF she genuinely is just adding finishing touches and mixing.

If we get much later into August and into September, it will simply be to late to get everything lined up and ready for this year.

So this time round, her birthday is a good shout and the most plausible to announce its release. 

Ironically, just like Confessions, I believe she announced that around her birthday and that was the only time she ever did for a new album, unless I am mistaken.

i understand the reasons why people are saying it, i just think it's silly to say anything definitively. we're in uncharted territory. she could drop a surprise album for all we know. as far as i'm concerned, december 31 is the only day we can say "it's not coming this year for sure."

If it’s a surprise drop out of nowhere then yes, she could release it anytime anywhere this year.

If it’s not, promo will need to be organised, created and facilitated.

That takes time. Plus, they’ll be the usual pre-order time line leading up to the release, I believe RH & MX had 2 months of pre orders?

So based on how long that normally takes, and to avoid the Christmas stuff in December, if no announcement is made by the end of this month then I think it’s safe to say it’s happening next year.

i agree that if it's a traditional release, she would need to drop the single by october. but that doesn't mean it's not all being planned already. there's no reason she has to officially announce anything until a week or two before. in fact, i think that would be smart. but i suspect it won't happen that way.

Yes, the first six tracks just before Christmas in 2014. It was the last possible day to release anything (at least on iTunes) because people were going on break for the holiday. All three of the singles were released, which may have impacted charting potential in some territories, too.

Then, later, three more tracks (7, 8, and 9 on the album) were released in 2015 before the full album.

RH was an unusual circumstance, so it may not be an optimal template to follow.
