Yes and no. It's not just one ticket nationwide, It's one ticket (or just a couple, or none) per screeening in each cinema that is reported.

I don't get why they'd even release the film here. Like who cares? Even a film about Trump would be a tough sell but Malaria?

I'm guessing it won't even hit 3 million, unless amazon uses some more of their bribe money to buy up a lot of fake tickets for empty seats.

THIS. Church communities in rural America will make a day trip to the next bigger town with a cinema to watch that thing. The same thing happened with The Passion of the Christ back then, which was much more successful obviously. For evangelicals it was basically a pilgrimage, to watch what many probably thought of as a documentary.
