Back in 2003 Madonna had the masses looking at her work.

I think the Patrica reference was very little known to the masses but again, that’s based on my perspective/assumption.

I think we were too young, but older people knew about her, I bet this was on the news all the time during the 70s

The original plan was Hollywood as the lead single then they switched.

Wasn’t it the same for RH?

I remember reading Unapologetic Bitch was the lead single but Madonna switched to LFL and the Valentine’s Day release (what should have been)….

I think AL is the strongest song on the album and now iconic..

At the time something more subtle couldve worked better

I doubt the cover art drove people away in masses..there just wasnt big hits (curiously people in France really kept buying it regardless)

yeah, the song killed the album, not the video, not the cover, or anything else. people hated it.

The next M project/album has to have some political element. It‘s why I admire her as a brave artitst who - unlike her peers or the starlets following in her footsteps - has got something to say.

That may be to an extent, but when they are actively banning you from all forms of making a song or album a hit, it doesn't really matter if there is hit material or not. There are `plenty of "hits" in music history that were hits because they were forced and pushed.

Idk. Had Hollywood been an absolute banger, it might have resurrected the album (and her) somewhat. It was probably the safest bet for a second release but still lacked smash hit potential. I find the song great btw and unlike AL, it hasn't aged, but it's mellow and subdued, not an era-defining hit.

The album just doesn't have hit singles and I'm not sure how they could have forced or pushed that to change. The "what if" conversation has been going on since the album's release nearly a quarter century ago, but I insist it wouldn't have measured up to the commercial success of ROL and Music no matter how it was marketed and no matter what was released as the first or second single.

Having said that, I definitely would have released Hollywood instead of AL first lol.

I don’t know how much more successful AL the lead single would have been in America with a different video.

The song faired much better elsewhere and was a top ten in all the major territories.

Maybe it could have managed to go top 20 in the states ? But I don’t think it was ever big hit material for the American audience.

The album is amazing but I agree with all you have said it just didn’t have the commercial clout we are used too, and certainly didn’t have the big obvious hit single songs ROL & Music had.

yeah hollywood and NF were the two only obvious choices for singles. NKM and "intervention" would have been fan faves for sure though.

Gaga has already started her promotion for her next album for March, and I am sure the records companies, don't want to be in conflict nor to be compared to .

Unless she’s been hitting the studio in secret she hasn’t had that many heavy sessions in the studio?

Unless she was with Stuart last summer after the tour ended ?

But it appears she has had limited time in person in the studio with Stuart.

She was hitting the studio on secret. We had no idea of all those sessions until she posted on insta in December. It was going on months. Confessions only took them that long.

Maybe she has and maybe monkeys might fly out of her butt. The only real fact is that we do not know she was hitting the studio in secret and we do not know it was going on for months. So maybe let’s try and separate fact from hopes and fantasies to avoid the inevitable disappointment of “maybes” stated as facts.

Yeah it has the hooks, I bet it wouldve been absolutely huge on radio and sales

Its acoustic tinged country/folk electronica pop logical continue from Dont Tell Me and likes and revisits themes from Like a Prayer the song

But it was too safe bet compared to American Life single, I guess..
