What backlash? She sold nothing with the last three albums, whoever follows and is interested already does.

Not true, MDNA sold 2m, RH 1m & MX around 500k...not bad for someone around 30-40 years into their career.

Agreed DWT was amazing and the geisha segment is probably still my favorite segment of any tour that she’s done. Also, we wouldn’t have St!nk flying around arenas wetting the vaginas of Connecticut Karens, soccer moms  and bull dykes alike today it it weren’t for the DWT.

Haven’t you seen the Grammy 2023 backlash which lasted for months… and thank God she began the tour and people forgot it for a while. Or the Eurovision 2019… Same will happen with a political anti Trump album. If not worse.
Barbra Streisand released Walls in 2018, a same kind of an album. It was her first album in years which didn’t even manage to enter top 5 in UK and not even top 10 in US.

But now, more than ever, people are sick of celebrities politics.

Or really hate politics, because of Trump and don't want to hear about it. Its best if she provides escape from the politics of the moment, I agree.

To follow-up Madame x with another political album would be the death of her career amongst the general public and many of her remaining fans alike. I adored Madame X. It’s enough now, we don’t need an anti-Trump album again right after the last one. Nor, I’m confident, are we getting one.

I'm sorry but I don't know what it is that she SHOULD be doing.. rather than whatever the fuck she wants.

The dust has already settled... She's Madonna.. Her body of work and impact are forever cemented in the canon of popular culture.

At 67...40 y in the business it's stupid 2 say things like 'her career will b over'.

both madonna and barbra have always been outspoken and political. expecting them to stop now is silly. and neither of them are going to have a hit album in the 2020s regardless.

i agree. she's made her mark. people on here acting like she could release ROL 2.0 and anyone but her fans would give a shit at this point. re-upping her back catalog and reminding people why she's so important in the first place is way more essential to her legacy.

S&S Vogue is amazing.

I appreciate it is not as glossy and staged as other performances of it from her tours, it’s simple in its approach.

But she looked phenomenal, the choreography is sublime, and it works effortlessly against the 4 minutes beat.

Amazing performance that worked a dream in a stadium!

I completely agree! I don’t get the hate towards S&S among the fans anyway.

It was an amazing tour.

The routines were amazing, she looked the best she ever has on stage in terms of physical fitness (outstanding at 50!) and whole show was pure energy.

Thats how to deliver a show in a stadium!

The whole show from start to finish had a really great entertaining factor.

I totally get your point.

Right now, the very best Madonna can do is what she usually does. Deliver a brilliant album.

If the quality is there it could become a bit of a sleeper hit, and attract traction but critically, it will serve as a reminder to why this outstanding woman, with a career most pop girls would give their arm for for, has the title Queen of Pop in the first place!

Yeah all that goes without saying. Obviously she can do whatever the fuck she wants and doesn’t owe anyone anything. The conversation was predicated on what would resonate MOST with the external audience. And that’s my opinion thanks.

A lot of the politics discussed were directly related to what was going on in the US under trumps presidency at the time, her views obviously being the opposite of his on things like gun control and climate change, and she was said to be referencing him directly in Batuka.

Then let them sing the Constitution of the United States and that's it. Why bother speculating style and sound of the new music after she shares pics with Stuart in the studio.

Eventually, London Bridge Is Falling Down, a featuring with the twins.

Madonna has always been political in terms of discussing and presenting her music and art that is on the social conscience.

But in terms of her actual music, not really. When I say that I don’t mean she hasn’t always made music that is about life issues such as love, sexuality, freedom, religion….

….but in terms of political issues of the day, she hasn’t I mean American Life the video and imagery was very political but the song and the album are not.

Madame X was ramped up in a way Madonna had never done before lyrically in directly singing about political matters that resinate today.

I think it’s a one off record in her discography.

This is a great point. AL is still seen as a political album because it was branded as such but the music and lyrics aren't really political at all, not even on the title track. The cover art and her look actually strike quite a contradiction with the album itself. There are some observations on the shallowness of the American culture but the core themes are personal growth, spiritual discovery and love.

Absolutely.

The song has zero correlation with the video and the album is not political whatsoever.

I admire the statement and that extended to the artwork and presentation of the album, but it doesn’t represent the album, as you say it’s about growth, discovery and love not politics and anti-war statements.

The cover and the other pictures are great, but they don´t make sense with the music and the lyrics.Do we know if it was inspired in Patricia Hearts, or in Che gebara?

I agree it felt at the time to me very odd but I was very anti invading Iraq and totally admired the video and statement.

I guess she went for it with the artwork and carried the theme throughout.

But you are spot on it has nothing to do with the albums content.

This. I think she should have used the theme for the single, and maybe then other pictures for the album, more related to the content. I don´t remember other photoshoots from the period that could have feet, all the images were Madonna-beret related, or anti invasion´s ones

maybe one of these? I mean , from that photoshoot

I think the album had a lot of social commentary dealing with materialism, fame, superficial, culture and such maybe some Kaballah flavour, love and family in the mix..

Yes it does 100%.
But it was received as a political album which it isn’t because of the video/artwork.

One of her best ever photo shoots !

Better than the AL artwork, which wasn’t bad but on the weaker side of her album packages.

But it was amazing having brunette Madonna back, even though it was a brief return to it before she went back blonde.

At the time she definitely spoke about the connection to Patti Hearst in the imagery, which would make sense in the context of the themes of the album as a sort of Stockholm syndrome related to buying into the illusions of fame and fortune.

Yeh I totally get that.

But I think that’s lost to an untrained eye who wouldn’t know about that.

It is Che Guevara and it depicts a revolutionary fighter image. As an image of Madonna it’s strong but I think it is disjointed in terms of what the album is actually about.

The military style typography laid on top with the blood red elements was certainly a strong looking package, but I think the album is mostly folky and spiritual over raw and angry, but I totally get the revolutionary representation of it.

Wasnt the shoot an absolute fortune? I remember reading at the time it cost like 100s of thousands of dollars.

Just because the “untrained eye” wouldn’t get it doesn’t mean that’s not what it was about, at least in part. That imagery is also completely representative of famous imagery related to Patti Hearst with the same beret and militant connections. It’s not up to you to say what it is definitively because of the most obvious and better known imagery associated with Che Guevara.

It’s definitely not upto me I’m just taking about all aspects and I believe it was mostly  received as a front cover to a political album due to the fact the image is a take on Che Guevara.

Which is what the discussion has been for several posts it didn’t help in representing the album as political, which it wasn’t, having a cover like that.

Yes agreed, i think ultimately it was clearly a reference to both there’s no doubt about it. And it definitely created a connection to politics that is not really what the contents of the album were really about. That said, one can be a revolutionary in many different ways that aren’t all inherently political.

Personally, I do love the artwork myself but could see some gorgeous imagery similar to the video for Hollywood working better perhaps.
