'God Control' should have been the first single from Madame X

Did I just read that Medellin should have been remixed by a top 40 producer because Mirwais is too experimental? :manson:

Madonna crafted a new level of music album with Madame X. A musical journey. An statement from a music legend, touching topics such as guns, women rights in Africa, an LGTB+ empowerment anthem. A rich variety of sounds and stunning visuals. Are we really complaining about how radio friendly is it? Of course IS NOT AND NEVER WAS intended to be radio friendly. Madonna herself blocked that possibility, creating structures aimed to music art and not vapid radio stations. The only reason why she promoted Medellin with Maluma was to let the widest amount of people know that she had a new album out.

Sometimes I feel we don't deserve her.

We do not. Bless you.

She also continues to tour her ALBUMS and not her hits, which reinforces the clear notion that commercial success isn't her primary focus...at all.

I love God Control better than Medellin. However, I like Medellin as first single. It is a great piece to represent Madame X as her world music album and all the latin influences.

Everything Madonna did in the Madame X era was very very well thought and built. There is a statement from beginning to end. For me, the best era, the best videos, the best tour since Confessions. She gave me something I was not expecting after HC, MDNA and RH, this last one a real mess in my opinion.

Love Madonna when she does not give a shit, love her when she follows her crazy instincts and gives her heart. Me too, I expect her to get even more extreme for the next album and tour.

You should post more often. 🙂

nope. shouldve been second.

first should have been FAZ GOSTO

I think everyone could have been satisfied if they went for the ‘Double Sided Strategy’ of releasing different first singles for different parts of the world (this was actually discussed by her label):

Medellin: 1st Single for South America, Latin American, Spanish World

Faz Gostoso: released 2 weeks after the above in the same markets

God Control: 1st Single for USA, Europe, Japan

Crave: released 2 weeks after the above in same markets

Future: Radio single only Released 2 weeks after the last single to all The World.

I wish Madonna did double A sides. When was the last time? The first album?! For example, I think GMAYL & I'm Addicted would have made a great double A side. For Madame X, I'm not sure. As much as I like God Control, I don't think it works as a 1st single or represents the album well. I can see why Medellin and Crave were chosen.

I think Medellin represented much better the album than God Control would have.

Plus she didn't really write God Control. I was actually disappointed when I realized that the first and politically most offensive part of the song had been written by Casey Spooner. The line "a new democracy, god and pornography" is very funny though and 100% Madonna.

The production and the song structure are really great but they come obviously more from Mirwais than from her.

Actually I feel much more the "real Madonna" (the fragile one of ROL or AL ballads, the erotic and humerous one of Erotica etc) in Medellin than in God Control which is a very good song but as a first single it would become a failed attempt to do another "Hung Up" ("I'm giving to my fan base the pop-disco hit they expect me to deliver").

I am glad she did not repeat herself and tried something really new with Medellin.

I suspect M contributed all lyrics outside of the opening?

Commercially, I don't think it would have mattered what was the lead single. In terms of buzz outside of the charts, though, GC probably would have been a good choice.

Mirwais wrote the lyrics, Casey just changed a few words to make it sound more “American”.

 Oh... hadn’t quite heard that explanation. (But I was ... oh, a month late learning that Casey Spooner was claiming M had ripped him off!)

So ... was Mirwais (and thereby Madonna) acquitted of this legally? Was the lawsuit dismissed?

The only problem with God Control is that it didn't go over well as music inspired by her time in Lisbon which is how Madame X was marketed as.

If it is really the case, then great! But do you have a source for that please?

But the Casey recording gives another impression since most of it is the speech of the part first the "chorus" was not there.

In the UK we had Power if Goodbye and Little Star as double A-sides but LS didn’t get much promotion.

I wonder what actually happened with Faz Gostoso as obviously without any video or special promo it was the biggest streaming success, just imagine if they recorded a video, perfect for summer and Spanish markets.
It seems she somehow wasn't that eager to promote the song or she didn't care about it. Even the fact of collaboration with Anitta is strange itself.

I think M wanted to do a video, she was informed for sure about the fact that it's the most streamed track on the album, she wanted Anitta for the video, Anitta wasn't available because she was on tour at the moment, M felt hurt in her big ego and that's it.

Casey posted on his Instagram the original opening speech he received from Mirwais, it was basically a bit clunky and Mirwais asked him to "American-ise" it. He got dragged on the post because he basically revealed he didn't actually do that much.

Was it really a Double A Side? I thought they just switch out Mer Girl for Little Star in the UK.

There is no song from MX that could have been a smash ala HU or Frozen. Faz could have worked, but it was a cover so i guess she wouldn't have released it anyways.

Faz had loads of potential. So many here didn't like it because it wasn't "deep" enough for them :chuckle: it was the perfect Summer BOP and also the 2nd most streamed song of the album. Clearly people liked it. I've never seen so many casual and non-fans raving over a Madonna song. The potential was there.

Couldn't agree more! Faz Gostoso is the only classic hit from the album. Crazy would have worked, too, with a beautiful video a la Crave.

Well, she didn't have enough money for the video...

Internet Gays crave another Confessions Banger Disco Stomper Madonna

So it probably wouldve smashed Manchester Gay Village better than poor Medellin

What fans keep crying for a confessions? I keep seeing this but have yet to see anyone say that or at least not until FutureNostalgia came out and said they wanted her to work with Stuart again. Madame X was never gonna work especially as a summer album. Plus you had the whole Lisbon narrative for ages it seemed. For all the personas it seemed very one note other than eyepatch and I went to Lisbon to be a soccer mom. God Control does stand out and I wonder if it was the plan to be the main single with the video being released pre-album and if it was indeed going to be performed at Eurovision which makes alot more sense in the context of LAP and Dark Ballet. IMO Medellin should've been released way earlier like in Feb to be a taste followed by God Control in April/May then either Crave or IDSIF in June. Also Faz Gotoso should've been a single even if it didn't have a video it still streamed alot and with mixes it probably would've charted well.
