While media barons still control the narrative, that won't be allowed to happen. The moment it became a possibility with Corbyn, they went into overdrive to destroy it. A recent doc by Al Jazeera called The Labour Files goes into detail about it.

I like Corbyn, but he lacked leadership, the whole not really taking a stand one things, like he was maybe pro-Brexit, maybe not. but the barons came after him.

Will check out this docu, not heard of it before.

Well this was a case of good old fashioned blackmail, bribery and... game of thrones. I condensed this synopsis from elsewhere but it may be of interest to history buffs...

From the Union of the Crowns in 1603, Scotland and England had one monarch but two Parliaments. Just prior to the reign of Queen Anne (1702-1707), the Act of Settlement (1701) was passed in England to ensure a Protestant succession, decreeing the crown should go via the Electress of Hanover, the German granddaughter of James I, and her Protestant heirs. The Scots Parliament made plain their resentment, proclaiming the deposed Stuart line had a stronger claim on the throne and passed an Act of Security (1704) that stated the Scottish Parliament had the right to decide who would be Queen Anne's successor. London, determined there should never again be a Catholic monarch, and wary of a growing alliance between Scotland and France, saw the removal of the Scottish Parliament as a way of achieving this.

In February 1705 the English Parliament passed the Alien Act, a form of economic blackmail, stating that if the Scots did not recognize the Hanoverian succession and if they did not take steps towards Union, Scots in England would be treated as aliens and Anglo-Scottish trade would be suspended

There were a number of poor harvests in Scotland in the late 1690s and its economic position was worsened by the ill-fated Darien Scheme to create a Scottish colony in Panama. The Alien Act closed the biggest market to Scottish cattle, coal and linen and Scots were to be excluded from England's colonial territories. The threat of economic embargo was so serious that the Scottish Parliament accepted to enter negotiations with the English Parliament. The proposed Act of Union undertook to pay 400,000 pounds in compensation to those who had incurred losses from the Darien Scheme with the majority of those benefiting being the Lords and lawmakers persuaded to vote in favour of the new Union. The idea was vastly unpopular among ordinary Scots and the allegations of bribery caused outrage, but most at that time did not have a vote.

In 1707, a commission met and thrashed out the details. The Scots lost the argument for a federal arrangement but did manage to secure the continuation of the Scottish legal system, education and church. Debates in the Scottish Parliament were heated and lengthy while crowds in the streets rioted, burned copies of the treaty and threw stones at the Parliament windows. A mob held the city of Glasgow for a month. But on January 16, 1707, the Treaty of Union was passed by 110 votes to 67 (with more than a suspicion that some of the poorer MPs had also been bribed - though this was nothing new for those days). The Treaty was passed in Westminster without opposition and the Scottish Parliament met for the last time on 25 March 1707.

When the Act of Union was given the Royal Assent by the Earl of Seafield, he touched the document with the royal sceptre saying "There's the end of an auld sang." Nearly 300 years later, at the 're-convening' of the Parliament in Edinburgh in 1999, the Presiding Officer was to remark that it was the "start of a new sang"....

Very interesting. I had no idea about that part of history. As always, rich elites create situations or profit on situations to end up richer and more powerful.

I’m always surprised at the lack of leadership being a detriment nowadays. Tories being such psychos should have put on Government whoever from the other party, even a goat! How can people vote for psychos because the other is not some superstar?

And all this is very recent because only some years ago a big scandal or a big event would be the end of a government no matter who was the leader of the opposition. In Spain in 2004 after the terrible Madrid attacks people voted for socialists even though the leader lacked all kind of charisma. I think nowadays people vote psychos because they agree with them because they hate all the things that the party hates and they don’t care if all is burning as long as remainers or migrants are screwed.

I'm more upset than surprised.  I can totally understand why people voted for Trump.  Middle America can be quite dull.  They have access to Media, hear all about the Karadashians and super rich.  Yet they have dead end jobs, that pay peanuts and work like dogs.

In the UK, the Tories, wouldn't tax the poor much, not let refugees in, as they think that's the reason why they are not rich, have better jobs.  When really all the Tories do, is support the rich, and the few lucky to make it rich.

It's all about divide and conquer to control people.  All the terror attacks, far-right stuff, protests.  Make people afraid, hate, gays, Muslims, Trans, Black, White, the police whatever.

If all the peasant are fighting aongst themselves, the select few with all the power can do what they want and we will just be worried about a refugee, Muslim, trans person moving next door to us, or even worse getting a job, taking over women and paying taxes.

Chaos and disorder, helps the rich, I mean if people are going crazy saying defund the police, BLM, Me Too movements, keeps us crazy.  Yes, I think we should stand up for these things, but defunding the police is stupid, yes the police shouldn't be racist, but if defund the police, the wealthy will be able to live OK with private security.  See what's happened in certain cities like San Fran during lockdown, the city turned to shit, yet the wealthy were still ok, their kids still went to school, being driven in nice cars, it was the public schools that were shut, the poor people losing homes, becoming homeless, can't afford to eat, losing out.

And media makes stupid believe voting for Tory's is a good thing.

I read that Tory majority wants Truss out and Johnson BACK???? WTF??????

I think they're trying to find a way to circumvent the actual Tory membership (who are mostly nutters) and just replace Truss with someone the parliamentary party wants - it won't be Bozo though. Either way, what a fucking shitshow.

Kim was right that moving to the UK was very much a mistake at the minute - I lasted two months and now at Gatwick Airport running for my life. :lmao:

This is brilliant though - people around the world are just done with platitudes from politicians. Which is why these sorts of interactions are becoming fewer and fewer, and why that Truss has gone into hiding.

That's terrible, what about your Uni course?

But it's only gonna get a lot worse so I don't blame you tbh.

Yes, something to do with mishandling of secret documents on her personal phone.

This was a perfect description of her…

Hmm, I've seen worse with zero consequences. Something else must be going down.

Imagine losing your Chancellor and Home Secretary in the same week? What a fucking joke.

Yes, I’d read that she was going off-script at the Tory conference and there were whisperings that she was positioning herself to grasp the poisoned chalice.  I mean, why you ever want to?

And now the Chief Whip, and apparently the Deputy Chief Whip, have resigned over the fracking vote chaos, which according to reports saw MPs being “manhandled” and “in tears” in the voting lobbies.

And this is just GOLD.

The latest season The Conservatives is QUITE the watch, though feels like the writers have taken it a little far as we approach the farcical season finale.

And yet the majority of the English (and Welsh?) would vote for those right-wing nut bags again. Like seriously, what else needs to happen to change that shitshow?

Don’t bring us into it!

You’re forgiven. I would say the Welsh brand of nationalism is a little gentler but then this happened this week at a pub a couple of miles from where my dad lives and I grew up.
