As long as I can feel the joy for making music, I'm sure Madonna will deliver. It just needs to be a concise 10 tracks...
the-queen Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 I don’t have a problem with a longer tracklist. The more the merrier really. Break the drought in a big way if possible.
acko Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 It's not even the demos, but the concept that we lost out on... Her 'Rebel + Heart' concept would have been the shit. Like we were ready.
Kurwisko Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 It’s such a great album, Damn I know queen never repeats herself but I still hope for something in vein of RH
KalamazooJay Posted November 11, 2018 Posted November 11, 2018 Rebel Heart will undoubtedly be praised as a return to form in 10 to 15 years time. And I have no doubt that it’ll be looked at as a late career classic in the critic circles. What was so special about this era was how much this album clearly meant to Madonna. It was obvious in interviews and performances. Say what you will about MDNA and even Hard Candy, but they both lacked that Madonna magic from her previous albums in my opinion. She spoke differently of Rebel Heart and you could tell it was an era coming from a pop star who was clearly looking back for the first time in her career with a different perspective than she’s ever had on what she’s accomplished. I agree with those who say she nailed this album on pretty much every level and that it’s going to be exceptionally hard to top.

Agree totally. There was (and still is) a little bit of everything Madonna on RH. Meaningful, melodic, personal, cultural,.....etc. My only complaint is the first intention....Rebel+Heart. A 2-disc (with a few re-worked demos) would have been phenomenal. To look back at the enormous number of songs to choose from, this endeavor could/should have been massive. I'm still happy with what I got (and what I wasn't supposed to get).!!! So many classics that remain personal treasures, not only from the music....but from the tour also.

Two albums ('Rebel' then, ahem 'Heart') about a month apart would have been brilliant, but the leak (as we all know) derailed the best of intentions/marketing. An album that keeps on giving....
todsmod Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 @Rebel Heartbreaker True!! Never get tired of it. We really got 3-4 albums worth....in songs (finished or not). And most (if not all) with beautiful lyrics/melodies. I'm still amazed with the whole era (even though plans/opportunities were f'd up).

Madonna may have gotten frustrated with 'music by committee' but quite a lot of tracks and ideas got churned out. We can be thankful for that. What is rarely mentioned is that there were more successful tracks than misfires. Pretty good going. @todsmod -- definitely 3 - 4 albums worth, if all had been polished up/finished. We can argue till the cows come home over whether a lot of the finished tracks on RH were improvements over their demo versions, but it is what it is.

Anything new and musically touching is welcomed....from my perspective (although I could do w/o the cheap champagne rose' thing). But that's another thread/subject!!
tasteinmen Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 When people say she hasn’t had a good album since Confessions I’m like “are you f**king kidding me??”, I honestly believe a lot of people simply didn’t give RH the chance it deserved because of the damage done by MDNA and Hard Candy, I think this next album will put her firmly back at the top.

One would hope so. Honestly, a little bit of quality control will go a LONG way with the next album. RH had a great lead-in single. Pity Ghosttown just...blew in and out like a wind through a deserted town...
Beastialg Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 One of the few albums from her that I really like, but I don't love. I think sadly the leak hurt it a lot. And I like a lot of the demos more than the final versions in the album (even if I try to convince myself not to).
Nessie Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 Its a very good album with a great lead single but i think it could have been the biggest hit of the decade if some of the incredible demos she recorded were included. She had all the material and visuals ready for it. Too bad that after Ghosttown underperformed she seemed to not care as much. I think the next album should be more in line with her vision of consistency rather than a bunch of good random songs. I miss those albuns that each song leads to the next and it all make sense together in the right order.

Thank god for playlists on your iPod where one can create a proper track order!!
le smoking Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 I'm really glad she didn't go with the split Rebel and Heart discs - it was too obvious imo. Having them all on one disc plays up the ambiguity of some of the songs and when listening to all 19 of them, it's like experiencing a sprawling patchwork of Madonna past present and future. Most of her albums have been snapshots of a particular time in her life, but Rebel Heart was the whole photo album

I wanted two whole separate releases because I thought it could be marketed better. The 'sprawling patchwork', as you wrote, made the album seem like a diverse hits collection...though, I felt having TOO many tracks diluted the impact. I love this album, though. It's not a perfect album like ROL, though still one of her best.
Fever Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 I'm not sure that including more of the demos would have made any difference - let's be honest the bungled promotion, her reputation (esp here in the UK), the continued crap press all overshadows the music itself. The fact that Ghosttown didn't make an impact (or any of the songs we regard as good) says it all really - and it's definitely not about the music if she's not played on the radio.
Cyber-Raga Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 I concur that RH was a good album and sort of also a return to her being passionate about her music again. Neither HC nor MDNA really left me with the impression that she cared that much for the music as long as she had an excuse to go on tour. RH felt different (whether it was or we are just interpreting this, it does not matter). The whole era really was inspiring and had a clear message and image My only complaint is the incoherence in sound. Even with a two part record it still would have been all over the place sonically for my taste. I like strong themes when it comes to lyrics and sound. So I hope that M14 will be a bit more cohesevive in that regard.
the-queen Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 I remember being annoyed some other song with the lyrics “my heart is a ghost town” received airplay, when I KNEW Madonna’s Ghosttown was vastly superior. Rebel Heart is a Madonna classic whether or not the critics want to say so or not. M has been a very consistent artist over the course of her career. VERY consistent.
yououghttavogue Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Were its high points high? Was the album as a whole underrated? Of course. But a future acclaimed classic? Please.
miki Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 i think b.. i'm madonna ,illuminati, holy water, unupologetic b... ,iconic, sex, veni vidi vici, are masterpieces in the sense that they are contemporary and edgy. i love that she's ambitious with her music and takes risks and experiments. these song are the reasons why she's my favorite artist . she never plays it safe. the risk being alienating her old loyal fans she went with it anyway.
badboydrunkby6 Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 Rebel Heart has some great tracks and demos and they grow on you...as an album, i feel it was just too scatter brained. messiah on the same album as bitch im madonna?

Very schizophrenic, for sure! Releasing two different TYPES of albums (one emotional, one party music) MAY have worked. There are some classic Madonna tracks on RH, so some of these tracks will be revisited in the future by commentators, that's for certain.
functions_X Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 one thing I don't really understand about the Rebel Heart positive feedback from the critics and especially the fans who rate it among M's best work, especially in the recent years, is the fact that Madonna herself complained it was made with a writing bootcamp (or am I wrong, was it about another album?) and that she didn't feel comfortable writing like this. But judging by the fan reviews, it was worth it in the end, and it's the right way to go? I am just confused and don't know what to think.

Well Madonna is not a fan of writing camps but she still delivered. That’s like me going to work every day even tough I hate it but I‘m delivering good results. Why is that confusing?

I find this part confusing
dollhouse Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 indeed the songwriter camps delivered the best material in years..i guess the ball dropped when putting it all together and mixing the record..
