Karl Lagerfeld sparks outrage over migrant Holocaust comments

French TV station receives hundreds of complaints over Chanel designer’s attack on Germany’s open-door migration policies

Karl Lagerfeld has sparked outrage by evoking the Holocaust as he attacked Chancellor Angela Merkel for opening Germany’s borders to migrants.

“One cannot – even if there are decades between them – kill millions of Jews so you can bring millions of their worst enemies in their place,” the 80-year-old Chanel designer told a French television show.

“I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: ‘The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust’,” he added.

France’s media regulator said on Monday that several hundred people had lodged complaints about Lagerfeld’s comments on the Salut les Terriens! (Hello Earthlings!) talkshow on the C8 channel on Saturday.

Lagerfeld, who was born in Hamburg just as Adolf Hitler came to power, had earlier lambasted Merkel after Germany allowed more than 1 million asylum seekers into the country since the migrant crisis of 2015.

“Merkel had already millions and millions (of immigrants) who are well integrated and who work and all is well … she had no need to take another million to improve her image as the wicked stepmother after the Greek crisis,” Lagerfeld said.

“Suddenly we see the pastor’s daughter,” he said in reference to Merkel’s father, who was a Protestant minister in the former East Germany.

Lagerfeld, who often courts controversy, said he was going to “say something horrific” before criticising the chancellor for the “huge error” of accepting so many refugees from war-torn Syria and elsewhere.

“Look at France, the land of human rights, which has taken, I don’t know, 10,000 or 20,000,” he added.

The French TV regulator, the CSA, said it was examining the programme.

The designer was widely criticised for the outburst on social media, although some users also came to his defence.

The TV show he made this comments in is a fucking disgrace. I truly hate thierry ardisson, he's a royalist and a hater. But what's more alarming is that most of the french tv shows that mixes entertainment and politics are very, very anti muslims.

Regarding Lagerfeld, i know from people close to him that he's in pretty bad shape, he had a stroke late last year (something he did not say publicly) and some people worried he could be the next "celebrity" to go...i don't know if he's doing better but his latest interviews are pretty awful with the things he said in them so maybe he still struggle with oxygen going to his brain.

There are also rumours that his Chanel show in Hamburg might be his last.

He is in deed a genuin in his work, but his character is not so healthy.

I do think what he said is unacceptable.

What has been the public reaction to this ?  The tv show sounds dreadful.  Lagerfield has made some awful comments in the past but this takes the cake.

The public reaction is always the same because we have people saying the same bs almost every week on tv if not twice a week so it goes along the whole climate. these tv shows are just going after the buzz,we have all these fake "specialists"  on tv 24/7, the kind you only see on Fox tv in the us but on every channel here, radio stations and in magazines. It's always the same thing, blame the muslims especially the ones living in the suburbs, you also find the same "specialists" taking side against feminists and the whole #metoo thing, fake new feminists who are from the right.....And this being France they hide their racism and classism behind secularism.

I just don't watch tv anymore because their neurosis take all the place in national debates.

Seems to be happening worldwide which is so frightening.  Notice the same things here.  Ultra conservatives are getting a real foot hold in society.

Thing is, here they are not even ultra conservatives, some even present themselves as leftists which adds to the whole political confusion we are living in here, we still don't know where our president leans toward even though he is pretty much in with ultra capitalism which means right but he's also liberal on social matters (like gay rights, women rights, racism etc...) which means left.

You know as much as i was disgusted by Lagerfeld's comments, that day i was so frightened to see 60 000 polish nazis demanding an arab holocaust in Warsaw that i almost missed it.

:gross:  Disgusting. The rise of people openly being Nazis is frightening.

Also tired of too many so called "left" leaders having liberal ideas regarding society but then also embracing capitalism and supporting the bankers and multi national companies.

We have those types here in the US, the "fiscally conservative, socially liberal" types. Usually just code for center-right/Moderate Conservative (and sometimes Libertarian). But they're not "Left"...no matter what they say. The money always comes first.

That was insane. Just recently saw a good report on HBO's Vice News about the rise of neo-fascist movements throughout the world. Scary times ahead.

What's with this designers being all crazy? How was the name of the the drunkard that ranted against the jews?

And this embalsamed mummy can go fuck himself. Ugh.

That was John Galliano.

Thank goodness Jean Paul Gaultier seems like a decent kind man. Like you said, so many designers are horrible.

Wow, people sure like to get outraged these days. Let's just pretend there's no problem with the left in Germany, it's all the right's fault. It's more outrageous what some washed up designer has to say on tv for 2 seconds than the gang rape of politician Selin Goren, who lied to the police about her rapists' identity in order not to offend the public and be seen as racist. Fucked up times indeed!

Well, maybe in Germany that Goren issue is far bigger but please understand that we're commenting some news from The Guardian here. And Lagerfeld is the bigger name.

True. Some ppl would like to pretend there is no problem here. I m not against the migrants at all, but I m against ppl running from war, trying to impose their way of life on ppl who are helping them. And really if Europe gets to be governed by Sharia law, like the majority of the European muslims want, it won't be Europe any more. It would become a backward place ruled by a backward religion that wants to suppress women and kill the gays. Its the reality.

I don't care about big names, I care about issues, and issues should spark outrage, not individual statements (especially those coming from people who have pretty much nothing to do with the issues at hand). The Goren case is not a local case, it is a grave moral issue, that has not been properly reported by world media and that has remained mostly unadressed by the left. Criticising Lagerfeld is fine, but leaping from the bloated statement of this one person to a critique of the general political and ideological situation is highly suspicious as to motive.

Go make a thread about it then.

It's clear who the ones here with a "suspicious motive" are.

Everything is always clear to the sectarian know-it-alls who smugly see the world in black and white, who divide it in bad guys and good guys.

Well at least you still have an element of self awareness in among the rest of the dross you write.

Oh that old chestnut.

As I said before, It's not the first time you've parroted this disgusting right-wing rhetoric about Muslims taking over Europe and installing Sharia law and not integrating etc etc like a fucking Daily Mail headline. Either you're brainwashed by whatever shit you read or you really are a xenophobe and/or racist. Take it to Twitter with the rest of the nutters but do NOT bring it here and expect no one to have the balls to say anything about it.

I do really wonder if people who think that know nobody Muslim at all.  There's good muslims and bad muslims equally to good and bad Christians.

Besides,  less than 5% of the EU population is Muslim!  They are hardly imposing anything.  And migrants are fleeing destroyed countries!  Destroyed by the first world!
