Monterey Park shooting turns mass celebration into massacre :nervous:
By Tim Reid and Kanishka Singh | January 23, 2023

MONTEREY PARK, Calif., Jan 22 (Reuters) - The red lanterns bobbed and banners proclaimed "Happy Year of the Rabbit" but Monterey Park's famous Lunar New Year festivities were brought to an abrupt end by a shooting that left 10 people dead and another 10 wounded.

Vendors dismantled stalls and workers took apart a fairground on Sunday in the normally placid community of 60,000, where thousands from across Southern California gathered on Saturday.

The city on the eastern edge of Los Angeles was holding its first in-person celebration of the Lunar New Year since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

But the festivities turned into bloody mayhem as a man was accused of fatally shooting 10 people at a ballroom dance venue late on Saturday. Officials said at least another 10 people were taken to local hospitals to be treated for wounds.

Video taken by local news media after the shooting showed injured people, many of them appearing to be middle aged, being loaded into ambulances on stretchers.

"Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence," California Governor Gavin Newsom said.

Monterey Park is around 7 miles (11 km) from downtown Los Angeles. About two-thirds of its residents are Asian, according to U.S. Census data, and the city is known for its many Chinese restaurants and groceries.

Heading into the planned weekend celebrations, the city said on its official Twitter page that a two-day open street event was going to be held in the downtown area.

"It has always been an exciting and memorable event with thousands of guests and hundreds of vendors joining us for fun activities, shopping and entertainment, and delicious food," the city said in its Thursday announcement.

The festivities scheduled for Sunday were canceled after the mass shooting.

When police arrived at the shooting scene, people were "pouring out of the location screaming," said Andrew Meyer, captain of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect entered the ballroom dance venue and opened fire. The shooting site was near the Lunar New Year festival.

Police have not named the dance club but were seen going in and out of the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, access to which was blocked off by police tape. The club opened in 1990, and its website features many photographs of past Lunar New Year celebrations showing patrons smiling and dancing in party clothes in its large, brightly lit ballroom.

A flyer posted on the website advertised Saturday night's new year party, running from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

"I was just in this area with my parents and I was celebrating Lunar New Year last night," said Cindy Phung, who attended the festival celebrations.

Her family left the area before the shooting happened, she said.

Six dead in California home shooting, including 6-month-old baby and her mother
By Kanishka Singh | January 17, 2023

Jan 16 (Reuters) - Six people including a six-month-old baby cradled in the arms of her 17-year-old mother were shot dead at a home in California's main agricultural valley on Monday in what authorities called a targeted attack and "horrific massacre."

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux linked the killings to the illegal drug trade, saying deputies had conducted a drug-related search warrant at the same home last week.

We believe this was a message being sent," Boudreaux told reporters at the scene. "We believe that this was a targeted family."

Two suspects remained at large, he said.

Authorities responded early on Monday after multiple shots were heard. Some victims were found in the street while others were discovered in the house.

One victim was alive and wounded when authorities arrived but later died at a hospital, Boudreaux said.

1 killed and 7 injured in shooting in Oakland, California
By Taylor Romine, CNN | Updated 6:51 AM EST, Tue January 24, 2023

Seven people were injured and one person was killed in a shooting Monday night in Oakland, California, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the 5900 block of Macarthur Boulevard just after 6:00 p.m. to investigate an alert from a ShotSpotter, which is gunshot detection technology, the Oakland Police Department said in a statement.

When officials arrived at the scene they found “several casings” but no victims, the statement said. During the investigation, officers learned there had been a shooting between several individuals, police said.

Multiple hospitals then began alerting police they had received multiple patients suffering gunshot wounds who had self-transported to the hospitals for treatment.

The Oakland shooting was California’s third mass shooting within three days.

The seven injured people were in stable condition, police said. The deceased victim’s identity is being withheld pending family notification, they added.

Just hours earlier about 40 miles southwest of Oakland, seven people were killed and one was critically wounded in shootings at two locations in Half Moon Bay, officials said. A 67-year-old suspect is in custody.

And in Southern California, 11 people were killed in a mass shooting Saturday night in Monterey Park.

What We Know About the Michigan State University Shooting
A gunman killed three students and injured five others. He was found off campus and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the authorities said.

The gunman opened fire in two buildings on the Michigan State University campus, the police said.

By Derrick Bryson Taylor | Feb. 14, 2023

On Monday night, the usually busy streets of Michigan State University’s sprawling campus fell silent after a gunman opened fire in two buildings, killing three students and critically wounding five others.

For hours, students and faculty and staff sheltered in place, many in dormitories and other campus buildings, as hundreds of police officers searched for the gunman.

Students across the campus in East Lansing, more than 80 miles northwest of Detroit, expressed fear. Among them was Jane Nodland, a senior nursing major, who on Monday night was at the university’s student union building to do homework with her boyfriend. She heard three gunshots and quickly dove into a corner before sprinting out of the building. “I thought I was going to die,” Ms. Nodland said. “It sounded like he was right there.”

Here’s what we know, and don’t know, about the shooting so far.

What happened?
The gunman first opened fire at Berkey Hall, home to the university’s College of Social Science, shortly before 8:30 p.m., killing two people, Chris Rozman, the interim deputy university police chief, said at a news conference on Tuesday morning. The gunman later moved to the Michigan State student union, a popular place for students to eat and study, where he killed a third person. The two buildings, just minutes apart on Grand River Avenue, were both unlocked and open to the public.

The university sent an email alerting students, many of whom were in dormitories, libraries and other campus buildings, to shelter in place or evacuate while the authorities searched for the shooter.

After a three-hour manhunt, the university police said the gunman was found off campus around 11:30 p.m. and had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Shelter-in-place orders were lifted, and students quickly returned to their homes or were reunited with their families.

What do we know about the victims?
The Michigan State Police identified two of the victims who died as Brian Fraser, 20, a sophomore from Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Alexandria Verner, 20 a junior from Clawson, Mich. The school district in Grosse Pointe identified the third victim as Arielle Diamond Anderson, 19, of Harper Woods, Mich.

All eight victims — the three who were killed and the five who were wounded — were students at the university. The wounded students remained in critical condition and were being treated at Sparrow Hospital, the authorities said.

What do we know about the suspect?
The gunman was identified as Anthony McRae, 43, and Chief Rozman said he was not affiliated with the university. A caller’s tip led the authorities to the suspect and that the authorities recovered a weapon, he said. No details were given about the type of weapon used, but Mr. McRae was arrested in Lansing, Mich., in 2019 and charged with carrying a concealed pistol without a permit.

The gunman’s father said in a telephone interview on Tuesday that his son had become increasingly angry since his mother’s death in September 2020, rarely leaving his bedroom. He also said that his son had lived briefly in a homeless shelter in Cincinnati, but had never been diagnosed with mental health problems and was not on medication.

What don’t we know?
As of Wednesday, a motive remained unclear. The authorities have not commented on what might have been found at a home linked to the suspect.

What happens next?
An investigation into the shooting could take weeks, according to an F.B.I. spokesman. President Biden on Tuesday called for Congress to “do more” to curb gun violence, saying the action was “what we owe to those grieving” in Michigan and across the U.S. He also called the shooting “a family’s worst nightmare.”

All classes at Michigan State have been canceled through the end of the week and are expected to resume Monday, Feb. 20.

9 children, including 5-year-old, injured in Georgia shooting
The Columbus Police Department has made no arrests in the case.

By Peter Charalambous | Video by Jessie DiMartino | February 19, 2023, 12:23 AM

Police in Columbus, Georgia, responded to the shooting at a local Shell gas station Friday night to find nine children, including a five-year-old child, injured with gunshot wounds.

The Columbus Police Department has made no arrests in the case, and the nine victims are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Police were dispatched to the crime scene at 10:11 p.m. Friday.

"The rash of gun violence involving our youth is impacting communities across the country," Columbus Police Chief Freddie Blackmon said in a statement.

According to the Columbus police, they arrived at the gas station to see "a large group of people" and the victims. The victims range in age from five to 17 years old and include seven males and two females.

The mass shooting follows a deadly attack in Arkabutla, Mississippi, where a shooter killed six people on Friday before his arrest. The Georgia shooting is the 74th mass shooting this year in the United States, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

"It is going to take a community effort to combat gun violence in our city," Blackmon said. "The entire village has a responsibility because incidents like this impacts all of us."

It has become unreal! Seems like 18th century Wild West mentality, except that probably people didn’t shoot at kids and their mothers back then.

It’s not really an issue here but I wished Madonna would focus more on the gun control agenda. It feels like it’s the most urgent matter, more so than ageism.

If they had any problem with sleeping because of it, they’d never done it in the first place. It’s just humans being monsters, nothing new sadly. Can you even fathom the terrible things people did to each other (and to little children in particular) during the thousands of years of human existence? I sometimes come across such stories in history podcasts, the few documented crimes that we still know of. You can calculate how many more there must have been, unheard of, undocumented, totally undetected.

2 dead, 6 injured in shooting at Douglas County house party
By Rob DiRienzo and FOX 5 Atlanta | March 5, 2023

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - Two people are dead after a mass shooting outside a sweet sixteen birthday party in Douglas County Saturday night. Deputies are investigating the deadly incident.

FOX 5 spoke with the mother who threw the party for her birthday. Officials said well over a hundred teenagers were in attendance.

Chrystal Walker-Cherry said right before the shooting, she kicked everyone out of her home on Sitka Drive after her husband discovered someone was smoking weed.

"OK. Everybody has to go. If you need to call your parents, go upstairs and call your parents, but the party is done," Walker-Cherry told FOX 5 that's what she was telling the kids.

Then, chaos broke loose.

"Not even two minutes after that we heard gunshots," neighbor Lashondra Martin told FOX 5. "So, I immediately ran outside, saw a little girl in the streets and just wanted to make sure it was none of my children."

That neighbor said she got a bedsheet and covered the girl's body while the other teens ran. She waited for police to arrive, then she said she called the girl's mother using her phone.

Ten-year-old Calvary Evans said she was home next door when the shooting started.

"We were sitting on the couch. My grandma was at the table, and she heard it," the little girl said. "We were scared because she yelled at us, ‘Get down, get down’."

Investigators said the suspects involved in the shooting killed two people and injured six others that night. The status of the injured victims is unknown at this time.

Walker-Cherry said as far as she knows, the shooter never stepped foot in her home. She believes he was waiting in a car up the street.

"He wasn’t invited to this party," she said. "They weren’t invited, so they didn’t know the address. They just camped out and waited on the children to leave the party."

Deputies have not released the identities of the victims or any possible suspects.

This is just horrible. Another reason why vulnerable people should not have access to guns.

What a horrible manipulative tweet. The evil trans person (not even confirmed the shooter was trans), the poor christian family. Not an excuse for the shooting of course, but I knew the minute it was reported that the shooter was trans (allegedly), right wingers would have a field day. Of course, guns have nothing do with it. As always. I'm sure, Republicans are celebrating. Now trans people are not only groomers, they are killing children as well. What a f*cked up country the U.S. are.

I've been consumed with work these last few months and haven't been able to post.....

The shooting at MSU hit extremely close to home. I spent my college years there with several close friends. I know exactly where the shooting took place and it's horrifying to think I walked those halls 20 years ago and to know people died on those floors. The night of the shooting, I spent my time texting numerous friends back and forth because their children were in lockdown. Children I spent time with and watched grow up. Kids I knew.

When you know people who are involved in an active shooting in real time, it's a terrifying feeling.

These shootings have taken a toll on my mental health. I honestly can't take watching the scenes from them anymore.

Sorry that you are going through this KalamazooJay.  Understand totally how this all would be too hard to look at or even hear about.   Such a tragic loss of innocent lives.

I will never understand how people can become immune to mass shootings and deaths in their own country but too often I see people blaming everything else bar the fact that so many have assess to high powered guns.  As these mass gun shootings only regularly happen in the USA and no other country,  it is so obvious what the answer is but nothing ever changes which is so frustrating and heartbreaking.
